UK kitties: 2 excellent 'Buffy' articles in 'The Guardian' t

Postby tyche » Sat Nov 17, 2001 8:12 am

There's a long article on 'Buffy' in the Guardian weekend magazine today. (It's not on their website, so I'll type it up when I get a chance.) They have this to say about W/T:
Sexuality, Lesbianity and Wicca
Witchery and lesbianism have always been synonymous to some degree (see 15th-century witch trial transcripts, if you like, or 'The Crucible', or 'Witchfinder General'), so it's only natural that the two lesbians in 'Buffy' are also both witches. However, by the fifth series they are amazing witches: their power has far exceeded brute, 'heterosexual' strength, and without them most of the episodes would end in the certain death of all the nice people.
Creative models of homosexuality, even positive ones such as 'Will & Grace', always present it as a state of stasis (spending, drinking, spending), in contrast to the 'social productivity' of heterosexuality (working, breeding, working). 'Buffy' uses the ancient association of Wiccan and rug-munching not to compound, but to reverse that model.

There's also a review of 'OMWF' in 'The Guide' bit of the paper: they're less than positive about Tara, but agree that Amber shone in this ep. I'll type this all up when I have time, probably tomorrow or Monday.

Please tell me that they did NOT really use the phrase "rug-munching." Uugh! *bewildered giggles*

Man, it's to early for this... no more journalists talking about rug-munching at 8:24 a.m.

Yup, they did say "rug-munching". Bizarre.
Also, I've just typed up the OMWF review and I'm going to post it in the reviews thread....

"Rug-munching" is ew. The phrase, I mean. Not the act.

And "lesbianity"? So not a word.

Wow, all tis funky post-modern analysis, then they throw in a phrase like 'rug-munching'. I feel somehow cheapened. Weird.

And, no, 'lesbianity' is not a word. 'Lesbianism', anyone?

reading words like Lesbianity is funny...but you should hear those people say it!

whatever...

How are you?
A little confused. I mean, I'm all sweaty, and trapped, no memory, hiding in a pipe from a vampire. And I think I'm kinda gay...

Re: the Guardian article:
Is there REALLY an "International Journal of Buffy Studies"? Who publishes it? Can one subscribe to it? If not, where can it be purchased?

Not dead, and yes the run down was 'rather' crap. But I did like the article, a mix of learned discourse and humourous diatribe.... and of course any positive things that can be said about BtVS the better.....

However its a double edged sword. We all yearn for BtVS to be given the recognition it deserves, to elevate it above cult status, but then compromises get made, in order to be all things to all people and it falls between two stools.
On the whole I like it as it is - a Cult, and the Coolest club around for those who can see beyond the Demon fighting
