The Parents Television Council Honors Buffy again!

Postby xita » Mon Jul 30, 2001 12:07 am

They still haven't changed their red light warnings (who can forget this quote "In addition, homosexual undercurrents manifested between Willow and a fellow Wicca practitioner.") but they have put Buffy in their top 10 worst shows for the 2000/2001 season! YAY! And you know what's funny? Not even a mention of the evil lesbian relationship!

3) BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
(WB/ranked #4 last season)

This series about a college-aged vampire slayer and her cadre of friends and fellow demon-slayers featured depictions of graphic, bloody violence and perverse sexual situations with greater frequency and intensity this season. One particularly offensive episode included simulated sex and implied oral sex between Spike, a vampire, and the Buffybot, a robot that Spike commissioned after the real Buffy rejected his advances. Another episode featured Spike and Drucilla, another vampire, being sexually aroused by targeting a couple, breaking their necks, and sucking their blood in a public place. Buffy is moving to UPN this fall.

But I would also want kids to see the excellent role models of Buffy and Willow, so it would be a tough decision. I know I'm risking sounding very conservative here, btu I think it's a pretty valid question.

darv: I don't have any kids (way too young to consider that, thanks), but I don't think I'd let anyone younger than, say, 12 to 14 (depending on emotional maturity) watch this show.

The scene they mention form "Crush" - where Dru (and possibly Spike) get off on killing the two kids at the Bronze - is certainly a good example of the dark side of this show. Torture, maiming, and other fun stuff is also a consideration.

Basically, it comes down to whether they have the ability to process these scenes as the fantasy and unreality they are; whether they can detach it from reality and say, yes, these are non-existent vampires and hellgods, people don't do this in real life.

If you can get past that, then you're free to embrace the incredible writing, acting and presence of this awesome show.

I agree, Kalita - it would depend on the maturity of the child involved as to whether or not Buffy would be appropriate.

But a teenager should be more than equipped to handle everything the show dishes out wih the metaphorical depictions of evil and certainly the sex. Which makes it stupid for the PTC to criticize Buffy, because there is a clear warning at the beginning that the show is meant for teens and adults, not for kids. I cant imagine anyone thinking that Buffy would be anything short of perfect viewing for young adults, in terms of it's entertainment and artistic value as well as it's role models and sympathetic depiction, mostly through metaphors, of the pains of young adult life. This should be shown in schools!

Yeah, when my nieces were staying with us last summer, I found myself watching my taped Buffy instead of the show when it aired, because I did feel it was inappropriate for someone under 4. I would probably say that preteens is as early as I would allow a child to see Buffy.

I have three children, ages 5, 3, and 7 months. The 5 year old sometimes wants to watch Buffy, but only when there aren't any monsters onscreen.
I think people give children too little credit. It's not like they would sit and watch hours and hours of Doctor Who and porn if we let them. Children know when they feel frightened and they know what triggers their fear. If they get scared, they'll run away.

These guys should get a life!

As for letting kids watch Buffy, I have two nieces one is now 14 the other 10, my eldest niece has often watched Buffy with me from the beginning really, when she would have been about 8 or 9 years old, but she has always been pretty mature for her age and could always separate fact from fiction, even though some scenes were disturbing she understood that it wasn't real, but my younger niece is much more sensitive to violence etc and during the odd time she has watched Buffy with me she has hidden her eyes during some scenes, so I don't watch it with her anymore, so I guess it really does depend on the individual child!

Check this out:

8) ANGEL
(WB/ not ranked last season)
This Buffy spinoff centers on Angel, a more-than-250-year-old vampire with a soul. Last season Angel moved from Sunnydale to Los Angeles to reclaim his humanity by saving lost souls. Not surprisingly, given its progenitor, Angel regularly features graphic violence, offensive sexual content, and foul language. One episode this season showed Angel pushing Darla, a female vampire, onto a table and then through a glass door moments before the two were shown in bed together taking off each other’s clothing. In a later episode, Angel set Darla and another vampire on fire. Their screams were heard, and their bloodied flesh was shown as they attempted to cool their burnt bodies with water from a nearby hydrant.

They could at least get the chronology straight. He burned them first, then he had sex with Darla. Yeesh!

You know, I wonder if someone in the Council wised up and decided that it was bad press for them to let the world know they've got homophobes in the wood pile. Maybe that's why they didn't mention anything about homosexuality in this year's run-down of Buffy like they did last year.

I've got a question, though - Do any Kittens have young children and, if so, do you let them watch Buffy? Or if you had them, would you?

I honestly have to say that I would possibly not let a young child watch the show because some of the more twisted stuff with the vampires and Glory torturing Spike and so forth might not be fully understood and might be too disturbing. But I would also want kids to see the excellent role models of Buffy and Willow, so it would be a tough decision. I know I'm risking sounding very conservative here, btu I think it's a pretty valid question.

All Hail ParentsTV for that lovely and amusing article!!!

for all the "homosexual undercurrents" (why aren't there any overcurrents?), for 'graphic, bloody violence. The 'perverse sexual situations', to all tthe 'simulated sex with Buffybots', and the 'being sexually aroused by targeting people in public'.

Oh, and the actual mention that Buffy is moving to UPN. Can't forget that..

Some of the scenes are pretty graphic - can you imagine showing a samll child the scene where Dru vamps Darla? And, heck the Buffy and Riley sexathons were a bit too much for me to handle. I certainly wouldn't let my kid watch 'em.

The Parents Television Council Honors Buffy again!

Well, neither would I. Or at least, I'd supervise what my kids watch. But you know, Buffy has never purported itself to be a kids show. And I also know from experience that these days, a lot of parents don't give a flying crap what their kids watch, as long as it keeps 'em quiet.

The Parents Television Council Honors Buffy again!

From another thread.. BBOvenGuy said

quote:
Excuse me, but not all Christians like being associated with groups like this one.

I am aware of that.. what I meant when I said the group should be called Christian Parents Council, is that those are the values they are upholding and they ought to be up front with it. They say that parents shouldn't let their kids watch these shows, suggesting that a good parent wouldn't do such a thing. But the way they are judging these shows is based on their religious content - the top "good" shows are the ones that have a Christian theme. The "bad" shows have no mention of Christianity at all. Coincidence? Riiiiight.

For one thing -- why isn't, say, The West Wing on their list of top shows? That's a great show! There's no sex, no violence, and I don't think there's any swearing.. my family watches it together all the time, you can learn a lot about government and politics. Even though we all have different political beliefs, we can regognize an intelligent and classy show when we see one. What's objectionable? It's too liberal. It has argued pro-gay and pro-choice on occassion, and that doesn't agree with the agenda of most Christian groups. So of course they're not going to call THAT a family show.

Just calling it a parents group is deceptive, IMO. Parents who really want to know about these things might hear something like "Buffy was ranked the 3rd worst show on TV by this parents group" and conclude things about BTVS that are NOT true. They wouldn't know about its strong moral background and ethical discussions. Knowing the agenda of the group involved will give a more accurate picture.

Like I said, ITA with SMG's comments completely. quote:
