How To Download Buffy Eps Via USEnet

Postby april » Fri May 18, 2001 9:23 am

okay, many people were asking questions about this, so i've started a thread about it. here, to start off with, is my basic spiel about downloading buffy eps:

there are 2 ways you can download buffy eps from the net:
1. using the USEnet newsgroup alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer

2. using a special buffy IRC channel on EFNet

the USEnet groups usually only have a few buffy eps up at once, so you often have to wait for quite a while to get a large number of them. with EFnet, you may have to try for a while, but there are people there who have every single buffy ep up and available for download.

now then, i wrote an FAQ for how to download eps via method #1, which unfortunately is on my home computer. when i get home tonight, i'll be happy to repost it. it does, however, assume that you know what newsgroups are and how to use them. len and i are searching right now for a good site that explains those basic concepts.

method #2 is a little trickier. a while back, we decided not to post any instructions about how to download buffy eps using this method, because the people that operate the buffy channel on EFNet are in danger of being shut down if folks aren't discrete in discussing it. so here is what i'll do: if people aren't having luck getting eps using method #1, then after the season finale airs and it's officially summer rerun period, folks can find me in chat at night and i'll walk them through how to download eps.

i'm easiest to find on yahoo messenger: my ID is rriotdemon. again, please don't message me about using EFNet until after the season finale has aired. things are just too crazy for me until then.

so look tonight for the USEnet FAQ, which i promise to post the moment i get home!

and anyone else who has questions/advice about this topic can feel free to post here. however, we will delete any posts that give specific information about EFNet, in order to protect the people who provide that service. general questions, however, are fine.

thanks kitties!

What is the name of USEnet Internet news server? Thanks in advance!

There are many many many USEnet News Servers. Most ISP's have one specifically for their subscribers, and they're named after the ISP. "news.mindspring.com" and so forth. Check the home page for your individual ISP and see if you can find any information there.

There are also general News Servers that are available for a subscription fee and a few free News Servers, although most of the free ones don't have a good selection of newsgroups or they don't retain postings long enough or they don't stay free for very long. A search engine can probably tell you how to find some of those.

Ed Wood, below is some more newsgroup information. when you have a sec, i encourage you to Register for the board, and then head over to the Introduction Thread to introduce yourself!

the name of the specific newsgroup from which you get buffy eps is alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer

like bob said, the name of your news server depends on your ISP. for instance, i use earthlink here at work, and so my news server is news.earthlink.net

here, fresh from the outlook express help files, is a basic description of what newsgroups are:

What are newsgroups?
A newsgroup is a collection of messages posted by individuals to a news server, a computer that can host thousands of newsgroups.

You can find newsgroups on practically any subject. Although some newsgroups are moderated, most are not. Moderated newsgroups are "owned" by someone who reviews the postings, can answer questions, delete inappropriate messages, and so forth. Anyone can post messages to a newsgroup. Newsgroups do not require any kind of membership or joining fees.

To use newsgroups in Outlook Express, your Internet service provider must offer links to one or more news servers. After you set up an account for each server you want in Outlook Express, you can read and post messages in any of the newsgroups stored on that news server.

again, i'll post my "how to download buffy eps from usenet" FAQ tonight. however, it assumes that you've already figured out how to access and use newsgroups, so work on that first.

okay, downloading buffy episodes: this is done through a newsgroup called
alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer

first of all, you must know what newsgroups (also referred to as USEnet) are
and how to use them. if you already know that, then skip this part.

newsgroups: what are they, and how can they help me score some buffy?

newsgroups are slightly different than websites - they're sort of like a
cross between email and a message board. you access a news server and
download all the message that people post to a particular newsgroup using
special software (many email programs, such as outlook express, will do this
for you). to access newsgroups, you need to have access to a news server.
if you're paying an ISP for internet access, chances are they have a news
server that you can access as well. you should contact your ISP and ask
them about newsgroups.

if you're using free internet access, the following link will automatically
configure Outlook Express to download newsgroups using a free news server: news://news.sheltonbbs.com/alt.binaries ... y-v-slayer. outlook express
is a free email/newsgroup program made by microsoft, and if you don't have
it you can download it at www.microsoft.com. this free news server has worked for some people, but is generally less reliable than one than you pay for (sort of like free ISPs). so be warned – it could get frustrating.

once you know about newsgroups:

here are the instructions for how to download buffy eps from alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer using outlook express. many thanks to bbovenguy from the kitten board for providing them. for instructions on how to download them using other news readers, go to the FAQ for alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer, located at http://www.geocities.com/btvsfaq/abmbvs-faq.html
instructions for outlook express:
First you must go to the newsgroup you want. We'll assume it's alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer
Binary files are typically posted in segments. You can recognize them because they appear as a long list of headers that look identical except for some numbers at the end. For example:
Promos for this week - buffy-family-promo1.mpg (01/11)
Promos for this week - buffy-family-promo1.mpg (02/11)
Promos for this week - buffy-family-promo1.mpg (03/11)
... and so on, until...
Promos for this week - buffy-family-promo1.mpg (11/11)
All the parts need to be there, or the download won't work.
Take your cursor and click it on the first posting - (01/11) in this example.
Next, scroll down to the last posting - (11/11) in the example. Hold down the "Ctrl" and the "Shift" keys together while at the same time you click on the last posting. All the posts between the first and the last will now be highlighted.
Wait a few seconds (or a couple of minutes if your connection is slow). Eventually, a bunch of gibberish will appear in the content window of your screen. Don't panic! This is a good thing.
When you're looking at the post headers from the newsgroup, make sure they're arranged alphabetically before you start trying to download. That will give you the best chance of having the segments in the right order, and it will keep other posts from getting between the segments.
Go to the "Message" pull-down menu. Pull it down and click "Combine and Decode..". (This feature is also available as a button on the toolbar, but you can worry about that later.)
A dialogue box will pop up asking you to arrange the segments in the proper order. Usually you won't need to do anything but click "OK," but it might be prudent to scroll through the list and make sure all the pieces are there and are arranged properly. When you're ready, click "OK."
The computer will automatically download all the pieces and put them together for you. Beware, though - Outlook Express will be completely locked out while this is going on. You won't be able to check your email or browse through another newsgroup until the download is done. It's a small price to pay, but one you should know about or you'll think something's wrong.
When the download is done, Outlook Express will present you with a spiffy little message that looks like an email with an attached file. Save the attachment to your hard drive, just like you'd do with an attached file in an email.

it helps to have a fast connection when trying to download buffy eps off of
alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer, because the files are big and it takes a long time...

that’s about the best I can do in terms of instructions for downloading buffy eps. if you have any questions about this, or tried it and got stuck, feel free to drop me a line at cyber_apple@hotmail.com. I can’t promise that I’ll be able to make it work for you, but I’ll certainly try.

Not sure. It depends. When did you get the error? Downloading. That doesn't sound right. Downloading is only limited by how much hard drive space you have. Small eps, RM or Mpeg are like 140 megs. Big episodes in VCD or Divx are about 480-650 Megs. So I have a 70 gig hard drive and I download VCD and DIVx and fill up 10 gigs quickly, so I make CDs.

Memory would only come into play if you are trying to play them. I was able to play a VCD on my old 166 pentium computer with about 96 ram. So I don't think that should be a problem.

You might want to try other software. I use Agent and it's a great program, it compiles all the parts together so you don't have hundreds of little parts per rar. There are other ones like microplanet gravity that are supposed to be good. Agent also has a free program called Free Agent.

for those people who want to email/message me about getting buffy on IRC/EFNet, know that i'm pretty busy right now and won't be able to walk people through how to download eps if they've never used IRC or an FTP program before and don't know how it works. you can still email me, but i might say "wait a month or so".

if, however, you're already familiar with irc and know how to use FTP, a few basic instructions should get you up and running. so i can answer those inquiries more quickly.

again, please do not post any information here about downloading buffy via EFNet and IRC. they are in danger of being shut down because of copyright infringement, and don't want any information posted publicly. thank you.

just to let everyone know, they've started posting "bargaining, part 1" on USENet. they're posting it in several parts (called .rar files), and have already posted parts 1-10 and are working on part 11.

if you have questions about .rar files and how to combine them, refer to the FAQ file for alt.binaries.multimedia.buffy-v-slayer, which can be found at the following page: http://www.geocities.com/btvsfaq/abmbvs-faq.html

good luck!

OK, i know this keeps being brought back to life, but i FINALLY got a computer at home, and i'm trying this out. thanks to april's SUPER directions, i downloaded a complete file OK (i think). here's my question: how do i play the file? the filename looks something like this (for Wrecked):
buffy610minisvcd.p04. windows media player won't open it. and what's the difference between this one and the ones listed that end in p05, or r07, etc.? i guess that's two questions...

any help would be super duper appreciated! thanks!

.r?? files are the ones you need. Download all of the .rar and .r?? files and you extract the episode using WinRar/WinAce/or whatever.

.p?? files are for file recovery. Say if your newsserver screws up and misses some segments of a post, or if it gets corrupted, and you find that you're missing a couple of r?? files. You only need to download as many .p?? files as you are missing .r?? files, then you run Mirror or SmartPar and wait as it reconstructs the missing files. It's a really clever idea that saves on having to request and wait for a repost.

Btw, it uses a form of Reed-Solomon coding that I'm happy to explain in tedious detail. Anyone?

Okay I have absolutely no idea what I am doing here!! I have Outlook express so I went to 'preferences' (in the edit pulldown menu bar) and then went to 'News' and typed in:
news://news.sheltonbbs.com/alt.binaries ... y-v-slayer.

Then in the side menu bar (it has 'inbox', 'outbox', etc) and clicked on 'Newsserver' and a popup box came up saying 'would you like to download the list of newsgroups on this server?'. So I clicked yes and it opened up a new window and down the bottom said it was connecting to news. However five mins later it said: 'The specified server could not be found'!!

Could ANYONE help me - anything would be appreciated!!

Yenc allows for smaller uploads for the poster and quicker downloads. Grace and others explained it a few times on the groups.

You want to download Xnews to handle them.
