It's "Air Your Brain Out" Weekend, Miss Kitty Fantastico!

Postby BBOvenGuy » Sat Mar 16, 2002 12:51 pm

Good morning!

I don't know about all of you, but I could use a break from all the spoiler madness we've been going through lately. So... it's time to open up the brain and let it air out with some things that aren't quite as intense, or are intense in a different way.

With that in mind, my question this weekend is: What do you like to do when you're not thinking about Buffy and/or W/T?

As for me, there's plenty of auto racing on TV this weekend. NASCAR at Darlington, the Indy Racing League at Phoenix, and Formula 1 in Malaysia. I'm also putting ideas together for my next book, which will be the "pilot" book for my own "high school kids with special powers" series. And if that wasn't enough, I've got some things to do with my choir's recording archive.

Whatever you're doing, have a great weekend, everybody!

Great topic...!!

Freetime = Handball. Love it. It's hard, fast, demanding and fun to play. And a major plus is that I can act out all my pent up energy!

BBOvenGuy, I've heard you say before that you're a writer... can I get ahold of anything you've done? I'd really love that, and I'll read (virtually) anything...

Speaking of which, reading would be a huge one of my "things I do when I'm not all Buffy-W/T-like"

I'm also in a fledgling collegiate a cappella group, having an utter blast with it, too... I absolutely adore creative endeavors of all sorts, so drama, singing, dancing, all top my list. I'm actually quite fond of thinking games and math puzzles, although I tend to leave those to schoolwork time. Except that really addictive pictionary type game I play online... must resist...

Ooh, and movies. I adore movies. I saw "We Were Soldiers" and "Gosford Park" last night, quite the double-header, eh?

Ooh! Another one... holding long-winded sociological debates with everyone I know... really a lot of fun and food for the brain.

(Edited to add: Looka me! Looka me! I got promotedized! Okay, flarping insignificant next to you lot, but I feel special)

Oh, good one, Bob!

When I have Happy Brain I'm spending QT w/ Mrs.Wiccie, or writing/performing comedy.

When I have Anxiety Brain (and thus in need of BTVS distraction) I worry about getting a day job and paying taxes. I'm removing my Anxiety Brain for the weekend, however.

I'm a music-tv-film freak...so basically, when I don't spend time on Buffy/Willow & Tara, I spend time on anything having to do with music-tv-film.... or reading, people think it's boring but I love to read a good thriller or something spiritual.

Oh, and there's my internet-addiction, but that has to do a lot with Buffy again...

Have a great weekend kittens!!!!

Actually of late I don't get that much of a chance! After reading spoiler threads and fics, I have to go back a work on the Buffy RPG. Check it out at http://www.btvsrpg.com/ .

Though right now I am relaxing (sort of, I read another Lisa fic) getting ready to drink to my national heritage!

We are babysitting our friend's 3 year old today. They are having another baby. So it is toddler maddness here. Our two boys get along great.

Chillin some Guiness and Harp in the fridge remembering the days when I would start St. Pat's at 10:00am! Can't do that anymore!

Yes, I'm a writer. Alas, the last time I sold any of my writing was back in the 80s when I was working for You Can't Do That On Television. I've spent most of the time since then being an engineer and/or quality assurance guy for an appliance company (hence the "Oven Guy" nickname). I left that job back at the end of July, though, and at the moment I'm shopping my first novel around. My second novel is going through the rewrite stage at the moment, and I'll start shopping it around next month.

I do have some Buffy fanfic available online if you'd like to read that. Your options include:

Reflections In Transit - My take on the development of W/T in Season 4.

The Sisters of Paradox - A Season 4 ensemble adventure with some guest characters from Doctor Who (although not the Doctor himself).

The Night of 100 Stars - A spoof of the crossover genre, set at the end of Buffy Season 1.

Willow In Wonderland - Season 2 Willow meets Lewis Carroll.

Have fun!

I'm an improvisor with Theatresports Toronto (think Whose Line Is It Anyway but as a competition between 2 teams). Into W/T fanfic, play pool every Tuesday with friends, and am currently training (like right this moment) on Macromedia Director for my job.

With the time I spend not thinking of BTVS, I'm either in a movie theatre catching the latest release, in my car drive nowhere, or exercising. It’s the little things that bring such pleasure.

Know what ya mean about airing out your brain. I’m wrapped around those such thoughts as I type. I feel the need for a couple Aspirin.

Posting from work. Oh the agony! But I'm in the process of getting plans for the weekend all settled.

When I'm not thinking about BtVS or W/T, I'm talking about it. No, that's a lie. My friends don't let me talk about it. They get tired of my -incessant- ramblings. Is that even word? I have no idea. -_-;

Anyways, so it's good this board is around. Or else I'd never get to talk the W/T talk.

Aside from BtVS and W/T, I like to sleep. I never seem to get enough. I also like to play softball, which should be starting just as soon as the weather warms up. Oh, and I'm a big hockey fan. So I watch my team whenever I can.

Other than that... I'm a rather boring person.

Hmm, airing out my brain...that sounds like a fine, fine idea. A very healthy one, too. Unfortunately I don't think this is the weekend for it--too much stuff going on. Sigh.

But if I may I'd like to take a moment to talk about something that's important to me. This Sunday, as most of you probably know, is St. Patrick's Day. St. Pat's is traditionally about the revelry and the drunkenness and whatnot, and hey, nothing wrong with that. I'll be partaking in a bit o' the craic myself. But since it's the one day of the year when everyone is focused on things Irish, it's a good time to be reminded that there's a lot more to think about than shamrocks and leprechauns.

Certainly we don't have to look hard to find violence and hatred in this world. It's on the evening news every night, in Afghanistan, in Israel and Palestine, in Sierra Leone, in our own cities and towns, sometimes in our own homes. And the Troubles in the North of Ireland have been going on for so long that they rarely make headlines in the US. But they do go on. Although things have improved somewhat since the Good Friday Agreement was signed 4 years ago, many people in the North still live in fear, still live with the threat or the reality of violence, still live with hatred, bigotry, and oppression as part of their daily lives. Many of them are children. A few are my friends.

This is not a political issue I raise, but a human one. More people have died in the Troubles than died on 9/11; the fact that this happened over decades rather than in one day does not, for me, diminish the horror of lives senselessly lost. So I ask that, on this day when "everyone is Irish", you take a moment in between your parade-watching and your corned-beef-and-cabbage-downing and your beer-hoisting to remember those men, women, and children on both sides of the conflict who have died, and to pray for a just peace in Ireland.

Go raibh maith agat, agus beannacht na Día agus na Le Pádraig ort. (Thank you, and may God and St. Patrick bless you.)

P.S. Don't watch or support the NYC parade! They discriminate against gays and lesbians!

Great question, Bob! Nice to learn more about my fellow kitties...

I might as well be a professional juggler, or one of those guys who keeps a bunch plates spinning on poles (they always seem to wear tuxedos for some reason...), 'cause I have too much going on, it seems. I'm a full-time grad student, I volunteer on a nonprofit board, I do nonprofit consulting (three clients right now), and oh yeah, I try to have a social and personal life with my wife and friends! Jeepers. And yet, I find myself reading and posting on the Kitten with what feels like alarming frequency (well, reading at least). Must be 'cause W/T are so adorable, and y'all are so much fun to hang around with.

I like to play acoustic guitar, mostly alterna-folk-pop stuff like Elliott Smith, Aimee Mann, and The Magnetic Fields. Ummm, my family is originally from Colombia, so I go to a Spanish discussion group in my neighborhood every once in a while. But mostly, I just hang out at home with my lovely wife, offering thanks and praise for the miracle that is TiVo.

P.S. I'll join in Dazey's prayer. My own family's country, Colombia, has just made official what was already going on for years: three-way civil war amongst guerrillas, paramilitaries, and the army. (gulp.) Peace is needed all around....

Oooh..You Can't Do That On Television! What a great show

It seems quite a few of us have a foot in the biz that is show, and I'm no acception. I study Radio and TV at uni, and my dad's a stuntman, so I'm sort of working towards the television/film industry.

Also..I play a HELL of a lot of video games.

Oh, and I fence. It's fun playing with swords.

I was in a band up until awhile ago, but no longer. They just signed a deal with a publishing label. *le sigh*

Anyhoo...I also like reading comics (Strangers in Paradise) and pretty things like that.

Time away from Buffy means me sitting in front of the computer typing up stories. I have a publisher in the states (I'm in the UK) and so far I have a book published, one in the process and I am currently working on my third. (I write lesbian romance/fantasy/science fiction.) That is, I am supposed to be working on the third but I get easily distracted by the lure of the internet or by playing console games!! Today though I was helping sort out furniture for our new extention so I had a reasonably good excuse for being away from the typewriter! No excuses tomorrow though! Hmm, wonder if there is a game I can play?!!!

Hmmm Dazey. I'm not going to enter into a conversation about Northern Ireland here, apart from to say that I live just outside of Manchester. It has one of the biggest Irish communities in the country and will be celebrating St. Patrick's day with gusto. And the IRA still saw fit to bomb the crap out of the city centre. Sometimes I'm a little ashamed of my Irish ancestry. And sometimes I wonder if the people fighting in this stupid conflict have any love for their country at all. But, I said I wasn't going to discuss it, and I won't. Suffice to say, here is not the place or time, and having a personal involvement in the issue doesn't offer objectivity. Well not for me anyway.

Anyway, onto the question at hand. When not doing Buffy stuff, I've started reading again. Proper books, not just Buffy novels/comics. The last one I read was about Violet Trefusis and her mother, who was the mistress of the then Prince of Wales. Oddly enough, Violet Trefusis was a member of the family that spawned Camilla Parker-Bowles, the mistress of the current Prince of Wales. Anyhoo, it was a bloody good read. I love biographies; always interesting.

I also like visiting with my neices and nephews. Children sometimes have a way of making you forget your cares. And then, sometimes they make you want to go out and get sterilised.

Right now, I'm working on a couple of pieces of original writing. It's really hard, as you don't have a set audience already, and have to explain things without being too prosaic or writing endless paragraphs of boring narrative. Hopefully one day it will all amount to something. Or not.

Time away from Buffy is spent either doing college work like my politcal science essay today Or spending time with the family. Next quarter I look forward to spending lots of time playing football (that's soccer) as it will be one of my subjects.

Well when I'm not obsessing about all things Buffy and W/T I'm usually hiking, reading or writing (or a combination of those). Oh, and since I'm a full time grad I think I'm obligated to say I spend lots of time working on my thesis.

Actually there is an ongoing bet at the lab as too how many years I'll have to extend my masters by as a result of the above mentioned activities.

Not thinking about W/T? Sounds sacrilegious to me. heh heh

Seriously, I think it’s a good time to air out the brain and take a break from spoiler overload. I know I’ve had my fill.

When I’m not obsessing about W/T, I’m designing/running web sites for environmental nonprofits. One of my favorite sites is one I created for a national wildlife refuge in Maryland. Right now is an exciting time as we’re gearing up to go live with our first Bald Eagle Cam. Last year we did a live Osprey Cam and it was quite a treat to watch the little one grow into a healthy immature osprey via the Internet.

In addition to my web work, I also like cartooning and creating fractal art. In case you’ve never heard of it, fractal art is artwork created on a computer using simple mathematical equations. It’s a very addictive art form and with a little practice and know-how, it’s quite easy to produce some truly amazing pieces of art.

Guess that’s it for me. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend and the NCAA tournament. Go Terps!!

Ruth, you say you're not going to enter into a conversation and then you do. I made no mention of my personal politics in my post. My concern here is for people, not politics, and as I said people, innocent people, on both sides of the conflict have suffered and continue to suffer. All I'm asking is for that to be remembered. If it becomes an issue I'll delete my post, though I'd certainly rather I didn't have to. In the meantime, I politely request that you edit yours.

Oh, you mean the life I used to have before I made the mistake of watching BtVS reruns on FX this fall and got forever sucked into this hideous vortex? Heh.

Let's see, I'm a newshound and a bit of a political junkie. I tuned out a bit this year, as I've had much going on in my personal life and because George W. Bush newsclips just depress the hell out of me. But I'm getting involved in the Michigan Governor's race as a volunteer for Jennifer Granholm (D). (Not trying to overly assert my political leanings. Just stating facts as they relate to my life. Peace and love to all Kitties, no matter their political affiliations.)

I like to read and at Christmas wrote up a list of classics that I've either never read or was goofing off too much in school to fully absorb when I did read them. Self-imposed adult education.

For pure fun, I like to play some video games, although my Playstation 2 is a bit dusty of late. I'm also a huge Detroit Red Wings fan. I think that the Stanley Cup is returning to us this year. I love to play guitar. Nothing better than going into the basement, cranking the amp and reliving my Nirvana youth.

I'm a bit of a student of television and film. I'm working on a massive collection of DVD's that includes film classics from every decade of the 20th century. As for TV, aside from BtVS, I enjoy Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Queer as Folk, Malcolm in the Middle, Angel, Gilmore Girls and, most recently, The Osbournes.

Finally, I love hanging out with my gf and best friend Patty and spending time with our crazy collection of pets. We have 2 dogs and 4 cats. Yep, we're a lesbian stereotype. Sigh.

There ya have it. I'm tame and boring.

When I'm not basking in Buffy goodness, I love reading. Although fantasy is my undeniable favorite genre, I'll read anything. Books are my friends Other than that I also write poetry and short stories and I love to sing and play the accoustic guitar. I also have an unhealthy addiction to smutty fanfic...

Well spring arrived today, at last, which means that in this part of the world summer cannot be far behind, closely followed by autumn and winter. There is a rumor that summer this year will be longer, from 1st June until 21st June, rather than the 10 days we normally have.

So its in the garden, clearing up after the recent gales, and pondering as to just where that rock that I found is to go [it's a japanese style garden, so these things matter]. Think of Tara for a while.

Then it's off to start fettling the catamaran for another seasons sailing. Spend horrible amounts of cash on simple things like shackles. Think of Willow for a while.

If there's time, I'll go watch the rugby down the road. Think of Buffy for a while.

Tomorrow, I'll do more garden stuff, but instead of thinking about Willow, Tara and Buffy, I'll think of Elaine, a very nice Amber type person I met in my tai-chi class.

Oh, then I'll think of Willow and Tara some more

what creative people visit this message board.

When I'm not reading message boards or watching/thinking/etc BtVS I love to read and spend a lot of time doing that. I work in a bookstore so that helps with the cost of material.

I also love playing with my cat who is spoiled and really owns me! He allows me to live in his house and buy his food!!

Well, I did a combination of airing my brain out and thinking about Buffy. I went back out to Griffith Park this afternoon and walked up the road where the Buffy crew had been shooting for the past couple of days. It turned into a nice nature hike.

I had my digital camera with me, too. I'll post some pics later on this evening and link to them on the Location Shoot thread.

Ahh, free time unrelated to Buffy. I, too, love to read and these days, I'll read just about anything I can find that's in English (English-language books are pretty expensive in Korea, but there aren't any stores in my city that sell them anyway ...). Then there's my Taekwondo class, going to see movies, renting videos. And after prompting from my mom, I've started writing a book about my experiences teaching here. Of course, my computer now has 5 or 6 unfinished stories on it, so who knows if I'll actually finish it ... I also do a lot of needlepoint, but I usually do that while I watch videos or TV (yay! multitasking!)

edited to add: the family research council is doing a poll about gay adoptions. Click here to go voice your opinion. Since most of the people who go to their web site a probably more conservative, maybe we can mess with their minds and skew it in the other direction

To get my mind off of Buffy, I'll spend time watching sports. This weekend it'll be hockey (Go Devils!) and the NCAA tourney. Going to watch NASCAR tomorrow plus more hockey.

Also playing on the PS2. Speaking of which, while playing Max Payne (basic one against an army shoot 'em up type game) today I came across a room with a dead body in the middle of it. Max says "I don't even want to know what happened in here". You walk over to the body and there seems to be a piece of wood sticking out of his back. And written next to the guy in his own blood? B U F

Seems I just can't get away from Buffy.

hmmm...in my non-buffy time? well, i'm fairly obsessed with the TLC show Trading Spaces...i read a lot, and write when i can, and right now spend a lot of time trying to find a job in theatre and researching grad programs in english literature...and when i can, i drop back in at my college to see the productions that my friends direct/act/design for, and visit my ex-g/f who is also my best friend, and the rest of my friends (i graduated in may 2001)...other than that, i look for new plays to direct when i have the time, new craft projects for wehn i have the money, and new exercise ideas for when i have the energy (substitute teaching sucks the life out of me!)

Free time not involving buffy? Hum... I love movies and books. I also love nature so I take a bus and in like 40 mins I get to very nice places.... where I can do my hiking thing, u know... Then I take taekwon-do and every once in a while I go back to my field hockey days and hang out with my old friends...
There´s also the sky. Specially in the summer... I spend most of my nights looking up at them.... Amateur astronomer I used to be...

Well, gosh, I think I can go about two minutes without thinking about Buffy stuff. I even dream BTVS. Almost every night. I even think about the show at sad things. Like wakes. But then it's generally not as much good stuff.

My friend's mom died. Of breast cancer. She was about the same age as my mom is. It's scary. My mom had a lump a few years ago, but it ended up not being cancer. Thank god. or gods and goddesses. Or good genes. Whatever. My friend's grandmother was at the thing after the funeral where people gather and drink. That's not supposed to happen you know. You're not supposed to go to your kid's funeral. But it does happen all the time. And it just sucks.

I made my gf watch American Pie 2 with me to help air out our heads. So I guess that's not Buffy exactly. heh, sigh. I like Buffy because when sad things happen it's not quite so bad as when sad things happen out here. It's things in stories. And dead people come back later. And Willow and Tara are neat.

He allows me to live in his house and buy his food!!

not a very exciting life but I'm content. lol

Read a lot.. mostly political non-fiction stuff but to balance it I read a lot of fluff like EW, Rollingstone, Girlfriends, Curve, etc. Listen to a lot of music and spend a lot of time with my gf. It's not the rockstar life of drugs and partying that I use to spend my energy on..but, it'll do.

That's one of the many things I like to do when I'm off Buffy. I also spend time writing screenplays (I'm a film making student) and reading. It always gives me something to work on...

hmmm...in my non-buffy time? well, i'm fairly obsessed with the TLC show Trading Spaces...i read a lot, and write when i can, and right now spend a lot of time trying to find a job in theatre and researching grad programs in english literature...and when i can, i drop back in at my college to see the productions that my friends direct/act/design for, and visit my ex-g/f who is also my best friend, and the rest of my friends (i graduated in may 2001)...other than that, i look for new plays to direct when i have the time, new craft projects for wehn i have the money, and new exercise ideas for when i have the energy (substitute teaching sucks the life out of me!)

I think this line´s mostly filler...

It's "Air Your Brain Out" Weekend, Miss Kitty Fantastico!

Postby Still Waters Run Deep » Sat Mar 16, 2002 4:44 pm

Oh, then I'll think of Willow and Tara some more

love and kisses
