Buffy's dead, but work goes on as usual in the halls of Mutant Enemy Productions.
"Feeling different? Not really," says Marti Noxon, the co-executive producer of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." "Nothing in our world has changed, still down the road from the hazardous-waste facility, still in the exact same location, still breaking stories the exact same way."
"Basically UPN has been fabulous about saying, 'Look, we're not going to try to fix something we don't think is broken.' They didn't buy us to change us."
With the show on its way to UPN from The WB this fall, with a two-hour premiere currently set for Oct. 9, Noxon, series creator Joss Whedon and the rest of the staff are fleshing out the sixth season, which reportedly was planned out before the fifth-season finale and 100th episode in May.
Recently, Web site Ain't It Cool News (www.aint-it-cool-news.com) broke what it claims are storylines for the first eight new episodes. While Noxon will neither confirm nor deny the spoilers (although she admits the site got at least some things right), it is widely known that series regular Anthony Stewart Head will have limited participation, and that there will be an all-singing episode for November sweeps.
"They're all really musical," says Noxon of the "Buffy" cast. "It's amazing. And Tony (Head) can sing like an angel - a hot, sexy angel."
On the Head front, the British actor expressed a desire to spend more time with his family, which is still based in England, and Whedon has accommodated. Head's character, Rupert Giles, slayer Buffy's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) "Watcher" and surrogate father, appears in a few episodes before returning to his native England.
This works out, since the governing body for Slayers, the Council of Watchers, has long been said in the show to be U.K.-based (Whedon being a bit of an Anglophile after having gone to school in England).
Also in motion is a "Buffy" spin-off, starring Head, in development by the BBC. Recent news reports in the U.K. and U.S. have discussed the series, tentatively titled "The Watcher," in which Giles investigates supernatural threats, with a darker, more adult tone.
In a BBC interview, Whedon said, "I want to make a show that's very quiet, very adult, dealing with ghost stories and family metaphors that represent what's wrong with us. It's the same way as in 'Buffy,' but without the kickboxing demons."
"Isn't that cool?" says Noxon. "Won't that be fun?"
There's no word where the show would air here - the BBC does have a cable channel, BBC America - but Noxon feels PBS is a possibility. "That would be the coolness," she says. "On UPN, you'd have 'Buffy,' and on PBS, it would be like a British BBC series. You never know, it might show up there. There certainly would be a lot of interest in it."
There are, after all, a million stories in the "Buffy" -verse. "That's right!" says Noxon. "God, there surely are, quite a few more spin-offs."
Speaking of Brits, there's one in particular that Noxon would love to see on "Buffy." "Oh gosh, yes, Eddie Izzard. Please, Eddie! Come do our show! He's dangerous. I have just tremendous respect for him, and he's just amazing. If he ever would deign to visit our universe, we would be glad."
"We have lists of people (we'd like to have on), and the problem is, many times you think, 'Well, now, I work on a hit show, and I'll go up and tell them that I work on a hit show, and maybe they'll be a fan or something.' Nine times out of 10, they're like, 'Oh, is that animated?' They're lovely, but they have no idea what we're talking about."
Apparently first contact has been made with Izzard, an actor, comedian and occasional transvestite. "I think he actually knows of us," says Noxon. "He sat next to Anthony Stewart Head on a plane. Tony, he's a personable guy, and I think Tony did say, 'You should come and be on the show!' We all wish that would happen."
Since there are so many British elements on the show (including vampire Spike, a Britpunk in the peroxide-blond Billy Idol mode, played by Californian James Marsters), would the show ever make a road trip to Old Blighty? "Uh, actually take 'Buffy' to Britain?" says Noxon. "You know, probably somewhere, the hair just stood up on the back of someone's neck ... no. This has not been discussed, but who knows?"
"It would be just wonderful if we could do it. It would be amazing. We'll just take one country at a time."
What's the goal for season six? "To not suck," says Noxon. "That's our goal. We don't want to jump the shark. I was on the 'Jump the Shark' website the other day, because someone told me about it, and you know, we still have a tremendous number of people who feel that we haven't jumped. We have far many more who think we haven't than people who think we have."
"So that's pretty cool. If we can just not jump the shark for another couple of years, I'd be a happy girl. I'm really excited about this coming season. It's good, old-style 'Buffy.' "
Noxon reveals that there's plenty planned for fast-track student witch Willow (Alyson Hannigan), and that the passing of Buffy's mom, Joyce, has set up all the characters (including the somehow-resurrected Buffy) for more adult responsibilities.
Well, maybe not all the characters. "Except Spike. He's not about responsibility."
A lot planned for Willow, that's great because it means more screen time for Willow and hopefully, Tara too
I too hope this means more screentime for Tara as well...
Dude. That would rule. I love him.
Many thanks for the transcript, xita.
I'm quite annoyed about that, actually.

Rohm Would Return To Angel
Elisabeth Rohm told SCI FI Wire that she's eager to return to her role as angry cop Kate Lockley on The WB's Angel, even though she's taken on a new regular role on another TV show. "Let's put it in print," Rohm said during an interview. "I would actually love to come back."
Rohm played the recurring role of Lockley, the police detective who alternately butted heads and connected with everyone's favorite vampire/private eye. Rohm said that she and Angel producers have discussed the possibility of coming back and added that, despite her new gig as a district attorney on NBC's Law & Order, she'd make time in her schedule for Angel.
"I'm off the month of September, and I'm like, 'Guys, even if I'm doing a movie, I would love to just continue the role,'" said the actress, who last season juggled both Angel and the defunct TNT Wall Street drama Bull. "They absolutely should do it. One of the cool things they did was space my episodes apart so much that people were waiting for me. With the schedule of Law & Order, they could continue that. There's a lot of anticipation. 'Is Kate going to come back? We like Kate Lockley.' There was always a five-episode gap that made people more curious."
And, no surprise, Rohm has an idea how to make it all work. "We could pop a few episodes in while I'm in California in September," she suggested. Law & Order shoots in New York. "They could run them over the year, and it would accomplish what we want. It's really up to them. I've called and said, 'I've not abandoned this ship by doing Law & Order. [Law & Order producer] Dick Wolf is going to let me do Angel. Write for me.' And we'll see."

Relationships with other characters besides Buffy:
"Spike and Xander are like oil and water. Spike didn't not like Xander, but Xander is in his face all the time! Spike's like - what!"
"Spike will be developing a lot of respect for Willow who's coming into her own as a witch and as a player in the the Scooby Gang."
"Spike will keep great protection over Dawn because of a sense of great failure. At the end of last season, he made a solemn promise to protect Dawn and he got his ass kicked. So he'll have big time guilt about that. I mean, HUGE. He's a pretty wet puppy at the beginning of the new season." (laughs)
There will be NO crossovers of any kind between Buffy and Angel.
Regarding his smoking:
He orignally was a smoker, but then quit. But, BtVS got him started again. On the show, he smokes these awful herbal cigarettes and he hates them. And now he says he's officially quit smoking, and wears the patch.
They start shooting at 4:30 AM on Monday morning and work for 12-20 hours a day until sunrise on Saturday. It usually only takes 1 to 2 takes to shoot a scene.
To all you "who sired Spike?" people, here's your answer:
Right now, Spike was sired by Dru, because the writers changed their minds. Originally, they thought it would be stronger if Angelus sired Spike, but they're going with Dru now... "But if they think it's more dramatic, they'll switch back." (laughs)
Juliet Landau tries to get away with a lot more dirty things than that are allowed. They always have to retake the most scenes with her because of it.
His favorite episode used to be whenever he was either kissing or kicking Buffy. But now, it's Fool For Love.
"It scared the absolute crap out of me! I thought my career was over, I was slamming stuff around in my trailer, I thought 'if you wanna flush the character down the toilet, fine!'" Obviously, it turned out to be incredible though.
He was offended by the Hawiian shirt because they were "cutting down Spike's cool".
They're making Spike an underdog. Someone you can root for. He thinks it's amazing that they brought such a villianous character to where he is now.
"Spike is cool, and I love myself, but I'm just not cool like that. I'm a dork!" (awww! )
Someone asked if they could have a kiss:
"I'd like to! But then I would start a huge orgy..." LMAO!!
James refused his first audition saying, "Buffy the what?? I play Spot??" Then he watched an episode and was so amazed by the show, he got nervous. He said it was one of the most incredible shows he'd scene on TV.
He said nothing but good things about Joel Grey. He said they "bonded" and he has such grace.
The Emmy snub:
James said he didn't really care because it just gives them more fire to be better next season, but he did say this:
"Sarah absolutely deserves and Emmy! Oh my God! Nobody realizes what a good actress she is... She's the quickest study I've ever met - I used to be the quickest study - but, Sarah buries me!"
He's really excited about doing the musical episode and Joss is even more excited. He said that Joss was raving about Spike songs he just wrote (yay!!) and that Spike would be in it a lot. (yay again!!)
He also said that Sarah was a "gracious, wonderful person, but doesn't like to fool around".
"Me and Sarah give each other enormous amounts of sh*t, but we just love each other to death."
Spike and the Buffybot:
"You would not believe what they cut out! There was this scene where Xander interrupts us and I turn around buckling my belt and the Buffybot's on her knees. Let's just say there was a lot more to that than what was showed."
He also says he can't brag about the love scenes because, "Sarah's fiance will kick my ass! So, I'll just say... (in a sarcastic voice) uh, it was just another day." (laughs)
Someone asked if he ever wanted to quit acting in the past:
"No, but I did feel like killing myself a few times... seriously." ( ) He said Julliard told him to just quit acting and he wanted to throw himself off Julliard's building. ( )
He can put on accents for English, Irish, Scottish, French, Italian, German, Slavic, and anything American.
"And Tony [Head] puts on an accent that's as fake as mine. We're all a bunch of fakers."
He says, "Spike is exactly the same character, but now we've just learned more about him. We know why he was so gentlemenly to Dru and a psychotic murderer to others - he's love's bitch!"
On fight scenes:
He says that if his feet leave the ground, it's not him. If you see Spike doing cool karate chops in the air, it's not him. He has a greenbelt in Judo (sp?), but mainly only does the small fighting, like punches, ducks, spins, etc.
Regarding "Crush":
"People were actually surprised that that after I caddleprodded and chained Buffy, she wouldn't love me! I mean, what would you do? (makes a zapping sound like the caddleprodder) Errr! - love me!"
Someone asks, "Are we going to have Buffy actually slaying vampires this season?"
(laughs) "Yeah, Buffy the Anything but Vampire Slayer." He said that this season's villian is actually a gang of vampires, but they haven't met them yet. He likes to be kept in the dark and doesn't know anything because Spike doesn't know.
"Like I don't know if Buffy and Spike are going to get together this season. I don't want to ask, because I'm afraid Joss will actually tell me. I mean, Spike actually thinks he doesn't have a chance in hell with her... but, he is still going to try."
He also said something about Joss telling him that just because he hasn't killed him off yet, doesn't mean he should let it go to his head.
"We are going to kill you, but not now." (Okay, he sorta smiled after that... I hope he wasn't serious! )
Makeup:
Vamp faces take about 20 minutes, compared to an hour and 20 like it used to. The beat up face in Intervention only took five minutes! I was so shocked.
The chip:
He doesn't know about the chip but says, "I would rather have Spike decide whether or not to be evil. I would like it to be an internal conflict rather than an external conflict decided by a machine."
"And now that Spike is in love with Buffy, he wants to get in... Buffy. (laughs) He not going to do anything to piss her off. Anyone she loves, immediately becomes important to him, so I don't think he needs the chip anymore. But what if he falls out of love with Buffy? What if Buffy burns him? Love can catepolt him into great acts of heroism or evil - love is a tempist. But, God, I hope that chip comes out. It's like wheelchair."
James paints! He says he's not very good though.
Passions
He said that Sarah liked the irony of having "Passions" because she likes bad TV. (laughs) Then she got Joss into, cuz he likes that stuff too. But James never watches it and made fun of it most of the time.
The Giles spin-off:
Joss asked if he was willing to make appearances in the new Giles spin-off and James is more than interested. There's a good chance we'll see Spike in it.
He said he loved the Fool For Love scenes with Buffy because "there's such a complex relationship between those two characters".
Also loves the Sopranos, video games, and renting movies.
About making Spike evil:
"There was a lot of talk about making Spike evil on Buffy and then moving him to Angel so he could be evil there. But that idea flew out the window with the move to UPN. But I would like to go to Angel to kick his ass." (laughs)
Next season:
They're just wrapping up the second half of the season premiere.
"Oh, I wish I could tell you guys what we're doing. It's really good and starts off really strong."
He says he already has a scene with Dawn and "it's good to have Spike and Dawn together".
"Spike's in love with a good person and that's bound to rub off on him. He isn't selfless, just horny." (laughs)
James chose the song "I Wanna Be Sedated" for the episode, Crush.
Buffy's death and rebirth:
"After I saw the script for The Gift, I went up to Joss and said, 'You can't kill Buffy! She's the show! Joss!!' But Buffy is brought back in the most interesting, most dynamic, and most surprisng way. Nothing I would have imagined. God, I wish I could tell you."

She recently finished filming American Pie 2 (from what I understand they didn't finish filming until early summer) and the press junket for AP2 is starting as well as her shooting schedule for BTVS. If the spoilers we've heard are even remotely true I'd guess that the premiere is going to be Willow-centric and if she does bring Buffy back then there's most likely some non-English spell(s) to be memorized. I'm sure it's all of this that is contributing to her dismay.
Just my 2 cents.

This is such great news. I'm glad that She's willing and able to come back. I really love Kate, and was hoping that we hadn't seen the last of her. (Doing the Dance of Joy)

9:00am ET, 31-July-01Rohm Would Return To Angel

They focused such a great deal of time on Darla last year that I'd like to see Kate, Lilah, Lindsey, Drusilla, and Faith (tho the last is not probable).------------------

James saying that they would bring back Buffy in a way he wouldn't have imagined makes me wonder, too. Maybe it isn't going to happen the way we heard it would.

Actors usually like it when their characters do something out of character, because it gives them a chance to stretch - Aly playing Vampire-Willow would be a good example.

I guess I was thinking of a situation where an actor/actress might have difficulty reconciling themselves with a character's motivation/actions in a certain scene.
Nothing spoilery there, just an observation.

This seems mostly to be minor James trivia, with a few "I'm really excited about this season." blurbs thrown in, it pretty much completely lack any claims of "shocking insider information" or anything of the sort.
By it's format as a Q&A session, it belongs in this thread. Unless there's a significant reason to think it's fabricated, *shrug*
