Hi TaraMaclay!
There are many available recordings of Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre", but I highly recommend the old (1951) Toscanini recording available on BMG-RCA (if not available in your local record store, you should be able to get it through towerrecords.com, borders or amazon ).
For those interested, this piece originally started out as a song for voice and piano. This excellent original version can be heard on a collection of Saint-Saens' Melodies sung by Francois LeRoux on the Hyperion label. You also should not overlook the spine-tingling performance of Liszt's transcription of the piece for solo piano played by Vladimir Horowitz (on BMG-RCA).

I read somewhere (or else I dreamed it) that they chose "Danse Macabre" because ASH was in the first few episodes of the british tv series Jonathan Creek, and this was its theme music.

Disclaimer: Its entirely possible that this is untrue! Can anyone validate?

Many thanks in advance.

Went to mp3.com found they had 15 different versions. Of the few I sampled none sounded right.

D'oh. I just downloaded the VCD too (Muffle rules!), and it came with extras including the right mp3, but... I only kept the mpeg. Did anyone else download it?

Oh, and try - read through this thread for how to get the episode, and hope your newsserver has a good retention.quote:

No matter how many times I watch this episode the scene with Giles explaination of The Gentlemen gets funnier and funnier. Anya eating her popcorn, twirling her finger to get Giles to turn the slide around and her facial expressions, like everything is so matter of fact and what The Gentlemen are doing is nothing, not to gross per her taste. Then we get the beginnings of our girls love affair. The sutle looks which are replayed in Tabula Rasa. Their love stared before the magic moving soda machine, it began with a glance at the Wicca meeting. With the sequence of glances mirrored in Tabula Rasa I think the PTB are showing us that their love is deeper than magic, it is not what brought them together. It is a part of them but not their binding force. They were connected from that first glance and although they are going through the briar patch of all heartaches they will be together again. It's only a glance away. In all a classic episode.

Speaking of Anya's reactions during Giles' presentation, I loved Anya's look after Xander mentioned the 'boobies.' She had this 'that's my guy' look on her face that cracked me up. They really do deserve each other.

Getting our first look at Tara's room, with its black-painted walls and fairy lights reminded me how much I miss it.
Maybe she fixed up her current digs (wherever they are) to look like that .

There just aren't enough superlatives to describe this ep. So I shan't try. Suffice to say that in my many viewings, it's lost none of its luster...in particular the W/T scenes still crackle with an electricity that quite literally makes my hair stand on end. I love that! And seeing this on broadcast TV once again reminded me of how I fell in love with Tara the instant I saw her, peeking out from under her hair...sigh.

Question--and I know that this has been answered before. Throughout the ep I was annoying my housemates by pointing out little tidbits (like Tara going for the boob grab when she's "guiding" Willow ) and trivia, and then in the projector scene they asked me if I knew what the CD was that Willow held up...and I was stumped. But I know that somebody knows, you know? Cuz like I said, it's been answered before. So, anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

It's certainly the theme for Jonathan Creek and if memory serves ASH played the part of JC's magician employer in the Pilot eppy. but I'm not 100% on that.

According to BuffyGuide.com ASH played Adam Krauss in the first episode of Jonathan Creek. The site also has a MIDI of “Danse Macabre” here under music. But it sounds different...

And sorry Dazey. I'm no help in the Willow CD department. If you want, you can stop by here in multimedia to try and get a closer look. All I know is that it’s red.

I think I might have mentioned it somewhere earlier in this thread. Then again, maybe not. But yes, ASH was in the first episode of Jonathan Creek as Adam Klaus the magician. I taped it when it was on BBCAmberica for a friend who is a big ASH fan.

Thanks guys.

See this is another reason why I love this board so much. Someone can ask or request help finding something. And no matter what that is (within reason) there is no sortage of Kitties that can help

I'll try th MP3 site. And thanks for the link to the Midi file. Since there weren't any words in the epi. the Midi works just as good. I had no idea that there were going to be that many versions of the song.

Also, for those of you who do VCD's (I can't myself) is there a way that you guys can make a VCD type of the emisodes. But just record the music an speach (not video). I might want to deal with you on this. I like listening to Buffy eps in my car. But the tapes are getting a little overused and crappy.

Thanks again.

Probably should have checked first (it's not like there's a reason to go there anymore), but according to buffyguide.com the song is: Camille Saint-Saëns - "Danse Macabre" (From The Best of Saint-Saëns and other CDs, composed in 1875)

I managed to find a copy, and I'm pretty sure it is the right version (although it was obviously edited for Hush). I've uploaded it here (6.55Mb).

i'd like to chime in with the woo and hoo for the giles/overhead projector scene (i don't think i've ever laughed harder during a buffy ep than when i saw that for the first time), and of course the Flying Soda Machine That Started It All (TM).

i'd also like to add that the way this episode ended was BRILLIANT. riley says "i guess we have to talk", but even though everyone finally has their voices back, he and buffy sit there silently, unable to find words to start the conversation.

this ep was truly a television masterpiece, and joss was ROBBED at the emmys that year!!!

honestly, i think this may very well have been the best buffy ep ever.

I watched this ep for the first time on Monday on Space.

And...wow. There's not much more for me to say that hasn't already been said.

I haven't had time to re-watch the tape I made (exams) but I was amazed by my first viewing.

I wonder if I would have seen the W/T chemistry if I had seen this when it first aired. I'm a rather oblivious person so I don't think I would have caught it. ^^;

I'd like to have seen it completely unspoiled...but any way you see it, this was a great ep.

It was actually kinda funny when I was watching, because my roomate was trying to study, and she couldn't concentrate because she was following the story for the first part of the ep (due to the sound). So I turned it down, and shortly after, the "silence" began and I was kinda...well...there ya go...and turned it back up ^_^

Aside from the W/T goodness, I definitely have to agree with the general consensus about Giles' presentation. Absolutely hilarious. I think he had quite a bit of fun drawing those bloody pictures. ^_^

I also thought it was funny with Riley and Buffy in the tower...when he smashed the wrong box...and looks all proud of himself and Buffy gets this annoyed look.

It's kinda interesting to watch all these re-runs with the knowledge of where the series is now.

I think in a lot of ways it's not the show it used to be. But I don't necessarily view that as a bad thing. I'm really interested to see where S6 is going because I have a feeling a lot of storylines that have been built up over past seasons are gonna come a-knockin'. I love the fact that Joss seems to have everything planned so far ahead.

I mean, the magic thing alone can be traced all the way back to S2. I re-watched Becoming II recently...and Willow getting all possessed-like to return Angel's soul? Seems even more meaningful now...

But anyway...

Shy Tara? *swoon*

Marvellous debut for Tara (and Amber) and an awesome episode all around.

Hi BBoven...
Hush rocks, not just cos of Willow and Tara, however, it made me really mad to see how the bitchy girls in the wiccagroup treated her [tara]- the leader, all condecending being like "what is it? do you have something to say?" - feh on bitchy condecension. And that laundry room vending machine move was electric - the aftermath, when they're both breathing hard, yeah.

Oh the girls in the Wicca group are great aren't they? You have to love them. Even if you, like me, hate them...

Poor Tara. That intense stare she directs towards Willow pretty much says it all. She just looks smitten. A smitten kitten. I think that was the moment I thought "Ooooh!".

And then of course, there's lovely grungy Tara walking through the students' common room when that guy drops the bottle on the floor. I used to like the way she kept pursing her lips. Cute.

I hadn't ever watched buffy before this episode, apart from 10 minutes of 'Amends' and I waas so confused I gave up. But I had a friend who sat next to me in GCSE maths and told me how I really ought to watch it & it was the best thing in the world. So I was bored and I watched 'Hush'. And I came in the next day and we had a fun conversation.
ME: I watched buffy last night as ordered and you know the red-haired one with the weird name? She's gay isn't she?
HER: No, nonsernse, you are Reading Things Into This etc. (She knew I was gay. Actually i recognised a lot of things in it compared to the way my girlfriend and I got together: the nice long slow subtexty implicit stuff ackshually Happened For Us)
ME: They were playing smoochy music when she said she was something special
HER: No, no, she is still waiting for her ex boyfriend
ME: Wot with the other wierd name? Smoochy, smoochy music I tell you.
I carried on watching Buffy & we had this conversation every friday morning and after 'Who Are You?' she admitted defeat. It was very satisfying.
This is my story.

oh, and i honestly thought she was called 'Terra' for ages. There's some accents i just can't handle.

I loved that projector scene! Esp. when Buffy was miming her staking the Gentlemen - though we all know that's not what it looked like at the time. lol. Willow looked cute when she took out the CD and pretended to choke herself (she did do that didn't she? lol). That was classic.

The more I watch Tabula Rasa and then watch Hush, I can just see what the text was in this episode. Instead of guessing what a first touch and a few stares from Tara make her feel, I now know that it made her feel kinda gay.
