A/A Subtle Acting Hall of Fame

Postby AmberBensonFan » Sat Mar 09, 2002 1:02 pm

I'd like to add a moment from "Older and Far Away." After getting harped on by Anya (with some help from Xander), Willow is backed into a corner. When Tara comes to the rescue, the smile that comes to Willow's face as she watches Tara stand up against Anya is not only cute, but very telling - it gives me hope of wonderful things to come (especially with some nice giggles during Hells Bells).

(Edited to fix new URL and to say I just LOVE the pic from Hells Bells - some sharp eyes whoever caught that one ;-)

I've mentioned this before in a different thread, but I LOVE the way Tara always looks at Willow to gauge her response--no matter what it is. Amber is amazing in these scenes. She's so wonderfully subtle, but completely devoted all at once. There's a reverence in her gaze--a complete and total love and admiration evident in the simplest of interactions.

The wonderful thing about these actors is that they don't need dialogue to convey emotion. In fact, a lot of what we know about Willow and Tara as a couple comes from the subtleties--the hand-holding, the snuggling, the "sweeties," and "baby's." One of my favorite moments is during "Crush" when Willow, Tara, and Buffy are walking down the hall discussing "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and Tara is digging through her bag for some change. Willow catches on and finds change for Tara. And then Willow gives Tara this bright, sweet smile which Tara reciprocates. It's so wonderful and it's such a "couple" moment. There's never been that much attention to detail with the other relationships. That's what makes Amber and Aly so brilliant!

I have to agree 100%. I think that the main problem with lesbians portrayed on others shows is there's no real chemistry between the actors. Often times the show will bring on a new actor to play the part of a new love interest and you can tell someone is holding back, especially since the characters are often times portrayed by straight people. I'm not trying to allude that A/A are lesbian, but the point is, they were friends before Amber landed her role on the show and I think that already having an established relationship and a level of trust between the two women has helped the characters they play become more 3D and realistic than the standard portrayal on many other shows. Not to mention that Joss is doing it not for ratings, but is playing it through as a normal relationship, whereas other shows do it because "it's in to be out."

In Tabula Rasa, did this strike anyone like it did me...? When Willow has fallen on top of Tara, they show a shot from a little ways back from behind them. You see Willow on top, but what really struck me is the position of Aly's body - very realistic, great interpretation - I don't know if that was stage direction or just something Aly chose to do herself.

She is lying on top of Amber with her leg sort of intertwined with Amber's legs. What I mean is instead of haphazardly fallen on top (which I guess would have made more sense in the scene, but much less sexy), and she wasn't straddling Amber's legs. She had one leg between Amber's and the other on the outside. (I hate to even say this but as if she was about to start "riding" Amber's leg). Regardless, I thought that position some kind of inherent intimacy between them, and led up to the action of Willow going in for the kiss.

Well, snippygal stole my favorite moment from Aly on page one, from Graduation Day. That was so amazing it made ME swoon.

My favorite one from Amber would have to be her adorable attempt to cover in the Magic Box in OMWF when she and Willow are just dying to slip off for some private time. When she blurts out, "T-that's right, the text!" I just about fall off my chair everytime. So clumsy and yet so cute!

Guess I'll have to find another moment from Aly to rhapsodize over. Might mean watching some eps. Oh, the pain...

The position of Willow on Tara was not an accident. It may have been subconcious but it was definately intentional.

You shouldn't hate saying it because if this had been on any later in the evening, thats exactally what she would have been doing.

Now the subtle acting scene I noticed was so small I doubt anyone else has even noticed it before. In the episode family, during the dance scene when W/T are floating, their feet touch for just a moment. In that simple action their love is clear. I just love the little things like that.

Oh I so agree. That leg positioning was very intentional and purposely sexual. Which all added to the fact that suddenly the girls were in their own world even as there was a vampire battle going on.

Also in Tabula Rasa (I believe, somebody please correct me if I'm wrong), Tara and Anya are thumb wrestling before Xander and Willow come in and Giles is about to make his announcement. I thought that was a great one.
edited to add: I also thought of another great one from Tabula Rasa--When they're all standing up to go to the door, and Willow and Xander think they're a couple, both Willow and Xander go for the typically masculine position when trying to hook arms. That's really subtle, and I cracked up when I saw it (but then I crack up constantly while watching Buffy).

I just saw "Tabula Rasa" and I would have to say that even though everyone had lost their memories Tara and Willow still clearly wanted each other. Just goes to show memory or not they still find each other.
Also in "Hush", when they grab hands to move the pop machine and then again in "The Gift" to move the crowd out of Spike's was to save Daen

The range of looks on Amber during the singing of Under your spell is quite good, from some rather lusty to innocent. I was watching the song and the getaroominess part first just now without sound, and noticed alot I hadnt when I was wrapped up in the singing (so something good came out of a busted soundcard).

In the final scene of Wrecked, Buffy asks Willow if she has gone magic crazy because Tara left her. Willow replies "No. It started before she left. It's why she left"

Right before she says "It's why she left" Aly does that little lip sound and has this incredible heartbroken look on her face.

From Consequences in Season 3, when the Scoobies find out that Faith slept with Xander, there are noticable shots of Willow in the background with a crushed look on her face. This of course leads into the crying-in-the-toilet scene. Both amazing.

Both these episodes are Marti-misery classics. Aly never fails to move me with her layering of Willow's character.

Another favourite is in Tough Love with the look on Aly's face when she says "that's a weird word" during the heavy but fantastic "junior partner" argument.

Let's hear it again for Hannigan *applause*

Edited just to add a couple of things from The Body. Anya is asking inappropriate comments about Joyce and after a couple of questions Willow replies "What?" and screws her face up. There is a look of disgust on her face, evidence that she still doesn't quite *get* Anya, even after the confrontation in Triangle.

From the same episode, the silently mouthed "I love you" is my favourite ever Willow/Tara moment. That gesture has more depth and feeling to it than any I have ever seen on BTVS.

sorry about the page disappearing. When I signed up for my new site I deleted the old one, but there was a delay in getting the new one up. Anyway, the new site is up and running, with the Subtle Moments there. I'll be cutting and posting more clips on Sunday.

Aside from a few new ones on the thread, there aren't any major updates to that section since this thread seemed to dry up a bit, but the more you post the more clips I'll add.

One reason why the thread dried up is because W/T are TEMPORARILYseparated, and Tara hes been absent for a couple of episodes.

------------------
Tara: My heart doesn't stutter.

Tara: Willow, I got so lost.
Willow: I found you. I will always find you.

Tara: Nobody messes with my girl!

Willow: Hi, um Tara. How are you? I was wondering maybe you want to go out sometime for coffee? food? kisses and gay love?

one of my favorite looks and sounds is in Family. When Donnie says he's going to beat down Tara... Amber's look of fear is so on with how she's remembering when he used to beat her .. but I especially like Aly's intake of breath when she watches how scared her lover is. The look on her face and intake of air say to me if Xander hadn't spoken up she was about to

Seems I was wrong, it is up, just the link is wrong, on http://www.megawitches.net/subtle.htm it says ENTER HALL OF FAME wich has the link http://www.megawitches.net/hall.html while it's actually http://www.megawitches.net/hall.htm so just removing the l in .html fixed it.

edited to add: and on the bottom of hallway two the link saying next subtle moment hallway, is linking to hallway two and not 3, same with the link at the bottom of hallway 3

I like all their bits...nudge, nudge, wink, wink. But one of my favourite subtle ones is in Family. Willow has asked tara if she wants to leave. Tara shakes her head and looks into Willow's eyes. Then her father says "You're going to do what's right, Tara". Upon hearing his voice she immediately looks down. It shows her fear of her father very well.

The thing i loved most wasnt really a subtle moment but in buffy vs dracula, when Willow and Tara are alone in the room and discussing how 'Dawn' feels left out, it gave me goosebumps when Willow came up and hugged Tara from behind. That was the first moment i realised just how much i loved them as a couple, and also the 1st time TV ever gave me goosebumps. BTVS does that to me all the time now (usually in W/T moments) but that was just amazing

My fav moment is not so much a happy one as it is a very real one. It's from "Older and far away" when Tara just came to the party and Willow runs into her in the hallway. That moment of akwardly greeting your ex-lover is so real, it gave me an instant deja vu feeling. Because the same thing happened to me when I ran into my ex-lover the first couple of times after we broke up. So kudos to Amber and Alyson.

BTW I have been lurking for a little while now and I must say kudos to the Kittens as well, I really love this board (even thinking about registering *wg*). I try to come here every day.

I always like when Aly is fidgety with her hands when Willow is suppose to be nervous.

In "Normal Again" when Buffy and Willow are talking about Will's run in with Tara, right after the line "I kiss my friends like that all the time" Aly give this little curled lip, head tilt, with a slight *umph* sound. She nailed that scene. I loved it.

Great new moments everyone, I'm working on cutting them all up now and posting them today. And I'll also be fixing all the errors people are getting. It was my first time using FrontPage and I didn't know that frontpage uses .htm and not .html so that seems to be the main problem.

A lot of people have mentioned the "Under Your Spell" scene and I already have it under the media section (both vid and audio), but was wondering if I should include it as one uncut scene in the subtle moments section as well since it seems to be so popular?
