I thought any children over 15 got a say in which parent they wanted to live with, is that only in California?
Did they say anything about an appeal?

By the way, what happens now, when this sort of thing happens in the States? Is it likely to be taken up and discussed properly in the media/Government? Or buried? How are juctices selected? Isn't it by a government panel, or is it an election?

And here's a particularly disturbing quote from Moore's decision:
quote:
The State may not interfere with the internal governing, structure, and maintenance of the family, but the protection of the family is a responsibility of the State. Custody disputes involve decision-making by the State, within the limits of its sphere of authority, in a way that preserves the fundamental family structure. The State carries the power of the sword, that is, the power to prohibit conduct with physical penalties, such as confinement and even execution. It must use that power to prevent the subversion of children toward this lifestyle, to not encourage a criminal lifestyle.
Um, yeah, you read that right. EXECUTION!
Fortunately, there's a shitstorm brewing. There's been one rally already and another one in the works. It's the church people who're working on the next rally. Bless 'em.
As far as appeals and such, I have no idea. I really hope there's some way to get this guy off the bench. The voters of Alabama certainly won't.

Last night on Aust. TV, there was a news segment (on ABC news) about another new study that has found children of gay couples are no more likely to suffer problems (of any kind), than those of straight couples, and are just as likely to grow up healthy and happy.During the story, they included a brief interview with two women who are raising their young daughter.
And Dr Kerryn Phelps (president of the Australian Medical Association, and also a lesbian) also spoke out to support the new study. The whole report was very positive.
Anyway I just thought I'd mention it as a little good news story
Thanks for the news, Sarah. I must've missed that (though I don't often watch much more than stuff from the late night news on Ch 10). Sounds like something from Today-Today or ACC. Wow! That's gotta be something that family people will at least listen to, if Dr Kerryn Phelps spoke in favour of it (I'm assuming she did - right?). She's a highly respected woman. My mother and I have always liked her.
Well, thanks again for that good news in the midst of all these unpleasantries.

As a church service began at First Baptist about 5:30 p.m., the six picketers packed up and took their protest to Immanuel Presbyterian Church on Vaughn Road. The group targeted this church because of its support and acceptance of homosexuals. Also, Immanuel Presbyterian helped organize a recent anti-hate rally and openly opposed Moore, the chief justice. However, the picketers met an even larger contingent of gay rights supporters at Immanuel Presbyterian, which has gay and lesbian members.

It just tickles me to no end when I read about you fags getting all in a dither when we come to town. We just publish a few simple words or truth in this dark, depraved generation, and the ground rumbles with you all running from the light. Amazing stuff!
Boy, it was all I could do not to head down there Sunday. Stupid me finally caught up with my TiVo backlog Saturday night, including The Laramie Project, which was awesome, and The Matthew Shepard Story, which I kinda didn't like.
I was spoiling for a fight. And that would just be counterproductive. So I pledged some money instead. Feel better now.
