W/T Article - Curve Magazine

Postby Tiggrscorpio » Tue Feb 12, 2002 5:53 pm

There's a brief artilce in the April issue of Curve Magazine on W/T and their wardrobe.
Here's the article:

GOT LEATHER?

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer's lesbian witches Willow(Alyson Hannigan) and Tara (Amber Benson) should cast a spell on their evil wardrobe designers. The breakup of their flowering relationship was bad enough, but do they have to be wearing potato sacks to boot?

Now, Miss Georgia knows how to look good - even dressed in a flour-sack frock my momma made - but clearly, these young 'uns got something to learn about how to showcase what the good Lord gave ya! Buffy gets a hip array of leather pants and off-the-shoulder singlets, while they drag out the hand-me-downs from Little House on the Prairie for our lovely lesbians!

Earth to wardrobe: Kick down some leather for the sisters, already! Since Willow is on the express route to the dark side, let's see her in a daddy cap, packing something special for Tara, or someone else on the horizon."

There's also a lovely picture of our girls from New Moon Rising!

While I agree on the leather idea I must give a big WHATEVAH! *complete with flippant head-jerk hair toss* to the concept of Willow having someone else on the horizon.

I really hate this magazine..Willow and Tara are the most believable couple on TV and they hardly ever get a mention in almost any of the lesbian publications, but especially this one...Then when they ( the magazines) have their stupid awards, they don't even hardly warrant a freakin mention. I can't remember who was given all the acclaim last year, but I do remember shaking my head in disbelief... Actually, it might have been ER, and while I do like that show, we got one half of a good episode and the rest of the season in angst (kim and Kerry)...Who runs this piece of crap anyway?

I totally agree Kendahl897.
It's obviously all an intentional snub by Curve

Does-not-compute.

Maybe all the W/T fans could set up a special page to let the fans vent about it, and then send Curve the URL! Or just have a thread where we all vent, then copy and email those vents one after another! Or set up a dedicated ventilation duct which connects directly to Curve's inbox, pumping the vents through 24-7 and...

ok, I'm done.

I actually like their wardrobe this season and think they both look great. Its a huge improvement from just 2 years ago. Maybe improvement isn't the best word, its a huge change. But I guess they could add a little more spice to their wardrobe! I'd like to see that!

Hmmm I'd venture to guess they must have *loved* their outfits from Xander's dream in Restless. Blergh.
This season their outfits have been very good as in the kind of stuff that is cool to wear and all, most of the time, which is great, but I just love them in their awefully bad wardrobe as well, they look good in *anything*.

Btw, we have a thread in which to praise their outfits if anyone wishes, the appropriately named Your (least) favourite W/T outfits thread.

Oh and about Willow being on the express train to darkness and the "packing something special for Tara, or someone else on the horizon.": grrr arrgh and up yours.

Yeah well you know why they're being what they think is 'hilariously cynical'; because Willow and Tara are just two girls. Two girls in love. They're not outrageous or anything and I think that's like, unacceptable for this piece of shi...oops, I mean, magazine.

Honestly, yeah, they look dorky sometimes. But their odd dress style is really why I love them. I mean, what are the odds of two strange dressers finding one another? It's damn cute. And I for one wouldn't want it any other way.

Perhaps if magazines like this actually watched the show a bit more often, they'd choose to focus on something more important than what Willow and Tara are wearing. But hey, superficiality is superficiality, and I'm glad that I don't think that way when it comes down to it.

I bet xita's not the only person who's written them a letter. This is just a silly little outburst from someone who clearly knows little about Willow and Tara. Someone else on the horizon? Pah. Right. Cuz that's going to happen...

Hmmm, I'm not that familiar with Curve but this kind of sloppy journalism is akin to what we read in the UK's, ahem, "foremost lesbian magazine" Diva.

I really do wonder who actually writes these magazines. Kendahl is right it seems entirely ludicrous the way in which the W/T relationship is snubbed by these magazines especially as it's:
a) a lesbian relationship
b) a positive, realistic, 3d and inspiring relationship to boot.

It's crackers. Absolutely wacko.

Ho hum.

If it's of any interest, when I renewed my subscription to 'Curve' last year, I included a letter asking why Willow and Tara had not been on the cover (this was right after Aly had been on the cover of 'Out'). The managing editor wrote back and said that many on their staff were W/T fans and they knew that many of the readers were as well.

She said she noticed that Aly gave an interview to 'Out,' but when 'Curve' had asked for one from both Aly and Amber, the actresses had turned them down. She said it was their policy to only do cover stories for people who agreed to do interviews. She said they respected their decisions and hoped they would change their minds in the future.

What I wanted to write back and ask was why they couldn't do a non-cover story since W/T are the best thing that has ever happened to gay television programming, but I left it at that. Now that I've seen this, I'm totally disgusted that this is the way they chose to publicize Willow and Tara. It's time for another letter because the April issue will be my last.

yeah a kitten letter writing would be good and to think I actually use to buy Curve

I think its cool that W/T don't dress like everyone else and their cousin cookie cutter same clothes, hair, weight and jewelry. The minute someone dresses her own way the media is down on them;whats up with that??? no wonder the fashion industry is so same same(sigh)

Long live indvidualist's(sp i know)!!!!

Scout, was it Gretchen Lee who wrote you back? Hmmm. I find it kind of odd that Amber, in particular, would turn down this interview. I also wonder if a reason was given for the refusals. Do they dislike the magazine? Was the story angle presented to them crappy? Did Curve ask towards the end of last season when the actors' schedules were nuts? I'm just kind of bothered that Amber and Aly both said no.

Who knows if they did say no? Could be spin. I for one don't buy it; Amber did Stuff and she wasn't on the cover.

I say blergh to the whole thing.

Well, that's kind of what I'm saying, Dazey. I find it hard to believe that Amber said no. I mean, why would she? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It really makes me doubt the competency of the editorial staff (more than I already do) if they can't get Amber Benson--one of the most cooperative interviewees in Hollywood--to say yes to an interview that hooks her up with an audience directly relevant to the character she's portraying. If it's true, somebody screwed up.

I'm a writer and I've worked as a publicist. Somebody fucking dropped the ball. It just bugs me.

Yes Amy, it was Gretchen Lee. She didn't give a reason for their inability to get an interview, but she seemed surprised that Aly said yes to 'Out,' but turned down 'Curve.'

I agree, the whole thing sounded odd. quote:

I completely agree - besides, aren't Willow and Tara supposed to be unusual people (cool monster fighters and all), not run of the mill? If they were walking around in halter tops and leather pants all the time it would be so boring!

I'm sorry, but has anyone at that mag actually watched the show this year!? They've got Willow in some of the hippest clothes out of everyone. She's got the hip-huggers goingon. The belly showing off, the leather jackets.

WTF!?!

Idiots.

I bet they just got pissy that Aly did Out and are being bitchy about it.

hmph
