German Kitties - W/T-article in German magazine

Postby ellenfan » Fri Dec 07, 2001 5:22 am

Hi, I know there are some German W/T fans here also, so I just wanted to let you know that I came across the December edition of "Lespress", a German lesbian magazine, yesterday and they have an article on Willow and Tara. It´s nicely written, the author actually really seems to be a fan of that storyline, and they have some nice pics.

Is there a link? Cause I could translate it as well. 5 years of German in college (oops. just admited I was a 5 year undergrad).

Course you can get a semi-intelligent translation from babelfish these days too.

Maybe Ellenfan would be willing to translate it herself if we ask *really* nicely.

Or scans from the mag itself, pretty please?

Unfortunately I don´t have a scanner. Maybe I can ask my neighbour if he scans it for me. But I can translate it for you, it might just take a while, but I´ll try as fast as I can.

Thanks for all the offers to help me, I will just try it on my own first. After having lived in the U.S. for the last 4 months, I should have learned some English. But I have a question: Since I can´t scan the article, I have decided to just type it and put it up on my website. Actually, the layout of the article itself isn´t that interesting, so it doesn´t make a big difference. All of the pictures are episode caps from different episodes. If somebody lets me use their caps, I could put them up as well, so you know which pictures they used.

Cici, I usually hate Lespress as well, and it was a tough decision for me to buy it, but when I see pictures of Willow and Tara I just can´t resist...

So, here it goes. First the German original, after that my translation. It´s only a rough translation because I didn´t have a lot of time, and I left out some terms that I just couldn´t translate (like "Quotenlesbe" and "Orgasmus-Analogie" ). I hope that you nevertheless understand at least the gist of it.

edited to add: In order to make this thread a little shorter and the articles easier to read I have put them up on my website.

You can find the German original here: http://members.tripod.de/melo2/wt/lespressdeutsch.html

The translation is here: http://members.tripod.de/melo2/wt/lespressenglish.html

The pictures are not the ones that are in the magazine, but I think they are also nice. Unfortunately, I downloaded them a while ago and don´t remember where I got them from. So, if anybody feels like they are theirs and don´t want them to be on my site, let me know and I will take them down.

hey, ellenfan, thanks for posting it. I'm from Germany as well and never read Lespress before but I think, the author got a bit mixed up with the timeline since the progress of the relationship is described quite poorly and not very correctly. Still, I liked it.
And of course it's nice to see some other German kittens on the board..

Hi aladdin, nice to meet you. Yes, I thought so too about the author, some things aren´t really in the chronological order, but nevertheless she´s really well informed, especially about the new episodes. Her article must have been written a couple of weeks ago though, because she doesn´t write about the break up.

Thank you Ellenfan. That was a lot of work. A wonderful article as well. I think the author did a wonderful job of describing the developement of the Willow and Tara relationship. She occasionally refers back to earlier events, but she does do the chronologically justice I think.

„Quotenlesbe“ means „a token lesbian“. I think the author was saying that there are plenty of gay/lesbian characters on shows today because it is well uhm politically correct to show one or to please the lesbian/gay fans or something, but most (I would say all) do not compare to Willow and Tara who are not there to for rating stunts, but who actually have a long loving relationship .

Anyway, I think she did a wonderful job describing the relationship for people who have not seen it. Although *now* would not be a good time to start watching, in the US anyway.

Okay I'm just wondering about this part in the article:
"Or when Willow´s best friend Xanders offers to take his girlfriend for a walk while the two witches do a spell..."

When did this happen?!?

You´re all very welcome. I benefit so much from this board, it was about to give something back.

Dr. G, thanks for the explanation of "Quotenlesbe". Funny, but for some reason I couldn´t find the word in my dictionary

bothered, I bought the magazine at the train station. You might also get it in a bookstore for women.

Thanks, ellenfan, for the translation. It's always interesting to see how many europeans there are on the board. I hope you all realize how unfair and absurd the majority of americans find the prudishness the author mentions:
quote:
Still a lot of things that are taken for granted for heterosexual couples cannot be shown, due to the strict and, for Europeans, obscure rules for Hollywood productions.

This is really due to a small number of noisy and narrow-minded people, and the conservative mentality of corporate studio owners who are most comfortable with shows like 7th Heaven and similar 'Ozzie and Harriet' 1950's retreads.
The biggest shame is that we in the US get to see so little European-produced tv. It always makes me wonder what we're missing. If Buffy were produced in Holland or Germany do you think we would have seen passionate kissing and groping (like B/R) in S4? Or strategically barely under the sheets lovemaking (like B/S) in S5? Unfortunately, we can only close our eyes and dream of what we're missing.

Well, the German TV networks MIGHT think they are more liberated from all the prejudices against homosexuals but then again, the way they are portrayed can be quite disappointing.
Lesbians are or were a topic in every German soap opera because the German TV series are mostly weird comedy, soaps or hospital shows. We rely a lot on US productions..i.e "BtVS"
Though, some of the German soap operas aren't as ridiculous as some of the US soaps are.

But passionate kissing, implied sex and even an engagement between two women are no problem for both the German TV networks and the public. And, remember these shows are broadcasted between 6 and 7 at night.

I could write a ton about this, so if you're interested in more, tell me...I think international comparisons are quite interesting.

About 7th heaven...I made a bet with a friend of mine and I'm more than convinced that Lucy will come out to her parents one day and "confess" that she's gay. quote:

Oh, I'm sorry I didn't mean to confuse you..that's just one of the things I'd love to see on the show so I made this bet in the hope that it happens one day.

But, no Lucy is NOT gay. Sigh. I'd love to see Annie faint. Maybe she could fall on Ruthie and make her shut up.

Oh, yes she is, she just doesn't realize it yet.

Well, we have all the TV shows like Angel, Dharma&greg, Friends, Seinfeld, Ellen, Buffy, Charmed, ER, Dawson's Creek, Roswell, Simpsons, Futurama, Sabrina, Full House (oh, I LOVE this show *sarcastic voice*), Family Matters, Golden Girls, Ally Mc Beal, Pretender, Profiler, Felicity, ... My own mother was a huge Dallas-Fan and you can still find these weird US sitcoms and older soaps like Springfield Clan and this strange one about Eric and Stephanie and Rich and so on everywhere on German television. Of course, we miss out on some stuff like "Passions" *heartfelt sob* and some of the typical American things but I'd say about 80 % of the major TV shows in the US come to Germany and most of them air at prime-time at 20:15. Now, tell me a German TV show that airs in the USA

Hell, all Germans are crazy about "Who wants to be a millionaire", BTW. And some sick mind introduced "The weakest link" to the German people but this version is just painfully horrible.

Ala

Dunno what happened with the quote, sorry.
