Oh wow - so much excitement I can't stand it. It's literally making me chew my fingernails off. I really can't wait to see how all this ends, especially now that Veronica has decided which team she's really on. Not that one player can make or break a team, but I still see good things coming out of it. Ooh, can she turn a double play? That would be soo cool.

Great job all around. I'm loving every minute of this. Can't wait to see how it all ends up.

Sorry Grimm, i was trying to be funny, not mean.
So a definite "No" to the offense.

As to Mama Gkika (The toothy blue haired chick, she's meant to be vaguely germanic)

I will now wear the ritual cow of sorrow. :moo

No worries...I'ts all love on the kitten board...I was being a bit of an ass. So, I apologize too. :fallen !

ps. It was funny...my first reaction was to :lmao. I should have stuck with that. I am not sensitive nor am I one to be politically correct.. So, I should have refrained from even going there.

Really exciting game absolutely fantastic
“So how are you at all the cheerlead-y goodness?”

Faith didn’t have to think, “Crappy.”

I Laughed at that bit because Eliza Dushku was a cheerleader in bring it on
Harmony's moment of niceness got me thinking she seems to be less villainous than Cordelia really her title of lapmutt is deserved as mabye without Cordelia would she even be a villain (out of the two of them in this fic she actually seems the more redeemable.
The secret kissing was adorably sweet and I'm really anticipating the next innings

Finally while I was at Work today a customer asked me which isle we kept prune juice on, and then started saying how amazing prune juice is absolutely made my day I thought wow I've met a real life Mrs Finch or Aunt Gerty.

I thoroughly enjoyed this update, as well.

I love that Harmony has a heart, and that Cordy still is a bitch. haha.

The game is intense and keeping me on edge. What the hell?! You cut it off with one more inning to go?! So RUDE!!!! ;)

Here's a tip for you: Keep me happy with update-y goodness.

Due to my usual time constrictions this is a little late feedback for chapter 49 but I am catching up, or trying to as fast as I can sorry, :ashamed

“A dream. No, more of the nightmare-y kind. You, you were like two years old, like my Great Aunt Adele was. I wanted to save you and you were holding your arms up like you wanted me to pick you up. Then I saw your eyes go wide. And I knew, knew that something evil was coming up behind me but I couldn’t turn around, couldn’t see who it was.

Hmmm, could this be something that Willow has picked up off Tara? It’s good to hear Tara tell Willow that she did rescue Tara just by loving her.

I had to grin at the idea of the girls checking out hair styles before the big game, I expected Dogdelia’s team, The Ladies, to be checking out their hair but not the ‘Reds.’

Love Devola’s line about knowing Cat-Fu but shouldn’t it be Kitten-Fu :laugh

I gotta say, I agree with Devola about the Loserville chant, it is pretty darn good.

It’s nice to see a little Willow/Tara loving in the barn before the big game.

Willow searched her soul. Cat-fu, me, here and now, meowing like a maniac in front of two girls who I actually go to school with OR not doing it and...

A big YAY to Willow for supporting little Mouse and not letting Dogdelia or (Dis)harmony get to her.

Score a big one to Faith for kicking of the fight between Dogdelia and (Dis)Harmony. ‘If I’m a bitch then you’re my lap dog’ was a nice and juicy line.

Meanwhile Lawanna had pulled both Cordelia and Harmony aside for a serious talk about sportsmanship.

Why is Lawanna having to do this? Shouldn’t Mrs. F be around or is she too busy getting stones on prune juice in her office.

I like that Veronica is assuring Faith that she won’t let the team down and that Faith believes in her. Hopefully Dog girl won’t try to get to her cousin and try to ruin the game.

Towanda pushed her on the shoulder, “You cheated!”

Veronica looked away then felt a tear slip down her cheek when Mouse walked over and held her hand anyway. Then Lisa and Kate stood by her, too while the others moved away.

I say a big boo to Towanda and a big YAY to Mouse cos she believed that her friend really tried hard in the game to hit the ball and even Faith had... well Faith in Veronica.

And now a big YAY to Willow as she points out to the team all about Veronica’s fear of her cousin, hopefully they’ll pick up from this and be a bit more supportive.

The scene where Faith just swears in front of al the girls only for them all to go quiet on her with only the sound of the birds in the trees and the crickets in the grass and her skin flushing was just a piece of pure comical genius.

WOOHOO YAY, :applause :banana :eatme :bounce Not only did Mouse manage to get to screw the Queens over but she also won the bet by being able to get to go to base.

Willow smiled a little uneasily. “I’m all with the happy, really I am! But I grew up with Cordelia.” She paused, “And believe me, this is just the beginning.”

We all know that Dog girl is a cheating bitch but there is still the tension between her and (Dis)Harmony so that could change everything in the game.

Allie AKA Babbles4Twillow:
Thats so Harmony, going soft then acting like a jerk to cover it up! The game...so INTENSE...
:grin :bounce THANKS SO MUCH!!!

“So what!” Devola said loudly, “Are we going to kick their ‘mooning’ butts or not!”
Faith laughed unexpectedly, “D. You’re doin’ it again, you’re killin’ me!”
Faith channeled me right there. Yup, sure did. Kid makes me laugh so 'mooning' hard, I swear!
And I LOVE to make you laugh! :dumbo

Glad you liked the tender moment between Willow and Tara. I live for that. And I love it when we take turns writing them . . . *sighs happily* And thanks for doing your share! :bow

ARIEL....HOW COULD YOU LEAVE ME HANGIN LIKE THAT?! ZOMG!!!! So...howzabout a double-update? All Cliff-hanger-like-tenseness aside, you already know I loved it! Keep it up, Chika!
She called me ‘Chika’ – I feel so cool! . . . wait, Chika means “dried yak-dung used as fire-starter.” *weeps* Wait! No, it’s cool slang! *does happy dance* :pinky :bounce :pinky

Maggie AKA leonhart17:
Well, there was a moment of softness from Harmony - I like it!
You should, it was your idea!!! Thanks! :bow :clap :applause

And you won’t have to wait long to see how it ends!

Hey, thanks for reading this for so long. You’ve been a long-haul visitor to this crazy camp world and I appreciate it! :love :applause :flower

Zampsa19752001:
I'm glad that the Lawanda spotted the pitchers (on Bitch C's orders I'm sure) dirty tricks. I truly hope she spots those planned for the last inning.
Well, Lawanna has played baseball and umpired her share of games although basketball and volleyball are her two best sports. She knew exactly what Tizzie was up to and it was her job as the umpire to re-enforce fair play on the field.

I kinda hope that Reds win because of their playing skills and not by Queens losing because of cheating.
Well we’ve used that plot device, so something different will happen this time – promise!

As for Willow and Tara getting some alone time soon, they will – it may take one more post, but it’s coming! Thanks for reading – you’ve stayed with this story practically from day one and that’s amazing! :bow :applause :clap

Lexi AKA True_Love:
Okay, I have to admit, although reading play-by-play is not my favorite personally; I think you are doing a good job with this.
Aside from this fic, I have never described a sporting event so this is a stretch for me and a good word from a former collegiate softball player is especially sweet – thanks! :bounce

I love the secret kisses. It seems like something any PDA shy couple would do, share secret ways of being intimate with one another when nobody else knows.

Looking forward to the next update!
Glad you liked Willow’s dialogue and the details in their W/T ‘water scene’ – I loved writing it. Actually got a lift from Jessica’s latest couple of posts on using physical detail.

Thanks for reading! :flower

Jessica AKA beautiful_love:
What a cruel place to stop. I NEED to know what happens.
And you will, right now! Big thanks for hanging in this long! And glad you have a soft spot for Veronica, she needs the love!

And of course Willow and Tara are just adorable. I totally agree with Lexi on the whole PDA thing. Very sneaky but sweet. Looking forward to more of their alone time later after the exciting end of the game.
And there will be some, but in the post after this – PROMISE!!!

Check my post to Lexi above – thanks for your writing and how it helps me! :bow

Richard AKA Azirahael:
My super-secret-psychic-powers detect an Heroic Draw coming on!

I guess you don't need to know baseball to understand heroics.
Right on, my brother!

Even if the queens (No capitals for them!) win, it's still not going to look good:
Wow, you won. all it took was bribery, a professional softball coach, a ringer, a bunch of semi-pro players, a spy, sabotage and the incredible meanness to turn a fun competition into a war. Go you.
I think if the Reds actually manage to win, Cordelia will go completely psycho, she's got too much of herself invested in making them "Losers". God she needs to take a pill. Or get laid. Or have every square inch of her arse kicked.
I'm voting for the last one 'cos i'm twisted.
Shame, shame on you for having such a GREAT idea! :mad I should’ve thought of that one!

I will now wear the ritual cow of sorrow. :moo

Moo. :moo
Wow, channeling Dr. Seuss: There and here, here and there, funny things are everywhere . . . The Ritual Cow of Sorrow? FREAKIN’ HILARIOUS!!! Thank-you! :bow :applause :clap :eatme

Grimm:
Yes, use me alllll you want!! It would be even better if I could be the one to hit Cordelia in the back of the 'mooning' head with one of those aluminum bats. But, I would be honored to be a part of this wonderful story in any capacity that you choose.
And now it’s in writing in front of witnesses! *Cue evil laugh* Seriously, send me some stuff via PM and thanks! This is a *YOINK*-able idea from long ago when you hinted that Devola might be your long-lost daughter. So really, you can only blame yourself . . . *cue reprise of evil laugh* I also know that you take occasional free-lance enforcer work when you have time after your Finey_McFine Security Chief duties. So, expect a call as needed! Fees to be negotiated.

I hated to see Devola so down and was glad that her enthusiasm returned by the end of the update. I really hate bullies. And the crap that Cordelia is pulling with Bettina goes beyond a simple dislike of Willow and Tara.
EXCELLENT POINT!!! She does have motivation for why she is doing what she does, more on that in subsequent posts, but you’ve caught a key point.

Wimpy:
Great to have you back! Doesn’t feel like a softball game without you! :pinky :party :pinky

Oh wow - so much excitement I can't stand it. It's literally making me chew my fingernails off. I really can't wait to see how all this ends, especially now that Veronica has decided which team she's really on.
Yay! Glad you like it. As to your OTHER question, stay tuned . . .

Matty AKA Mgraham93:
Hey, glad the game is exciting – I’m trying, believe me!

So Faith rated her cheerleading abilities as “crappy” and you said:
I Laughed at that bit because Eliza Dushku was a cheerleader in Bring It On
Whoa! Been a WHILE since I saw that epic! Have to check it out again for the amazing Ms. Dushku! Thanks for the tip! :clap

Glad you liked the secret kisses, there will be more tenderness soon once the game is over with – PROMISE!!!

Finally while I was at Work today a customer asked me which isle we kept prune juice on, and then started saying how amazing prune juice is absolutely made my day I thought wow I've met a real life Mrs Finch or Aunt Gerty.
Wow! I blinked, re-blinked and went: :lol :lmao :laugh :rofl Thank you, sir! And (stealth alert) there may be another bit of cross-over magic in store later . . .

fhiwda:
Keep you happy, eh? Trying to take that hint, but it hasn’t been easy!

I love that Harmony has a heart, and that Cordy still is a bitch. haha.
:bow Glad it worked!

The game is intense and keeping me on edge. What the hell?! You cut it off with one more inning to go?! So RUDE!!!!
Comin’ atcha right now!

Rick AKA willowtaralover:

I had to grin at the idea of the girls checking out hair styles before the big game, I expected Dogdelia’s team, The Ladies, to be checking out their hair but not the ‘Reds.’
Our girls were checking their hair for functionality, not fashion but Connie IS quite a femme in spite of being a good athlete and Debbie probably will be when she gets older.

Love Devola’s line about knowing Cat-Fu but shouldn’t it be Kitten-Fu
I gotta say, I agree with Devola about the Loserville chant, it is pretty darn good.
Yeah, but ‘Cat-fu’ scanned better! And glad you liked it D’s cheer! Stay tuned, your comment has been *YOINK*-inated into a story change! :bow :applause :bow

‘If I’m a bitch then you’re my lap dog’ was a nice and juicy line.
You ought to know, it was inspired by your lap-dog comment and your christening of Cordelia as ‘Dogdelia’ – so that’s one more kudo you’ve got coming! :bow <=Dang! All this bowing is making my back hurt!

About Lawanna handling the sportsmanship talk, first I love that you think things over so much and take the time to offer suggestions and raise issues. I’ve often benefited from your thoughts, not to mention wicked wit! In this case, there is a general consensus among the experienced counselors to involve Mrs. Finch as little as possible in the moment to moment dealings between them. In addition, Lawanna is the Program Leader for Sports and the Umpire, so she considers it part of her job to model good sportsmanship and enforce the rules on the field.

So glad you enjoyed Faith’s blush! I got all dance-y bounce-y! :eatme :pinky :bounce And yes, Willow was cool to explain things and pull the team back together!

As always, thanks for reading and for taking the time on f/b! :flower

Feedback is golden thanks for reading, feed-back, and AMAZING ideas! :applause :applause :applause

Title: How I Met Your Mother*
Author: Ariel
Email: blaziak@yahoo.com
Feedback: All feedback welcomed, specific input appreciated, harsh on me via PM
Rating: PG, pretty tame - ratings will change depending on content.
Disclaimer: I don't own these characters, but I love to take them for a ride!
Summary: A/U before season 1, the summer after Willow's freshman year with a large dose of Queen Cordelia at her bitchy best and teen-aged angst.

Author’s Note: END OF GAME GUARANTEED! This ended up being one of the most difficult things I’ve ever written with all the logistics of batting order and working in the outcome. Thanks for hanging in there!!!

Part 51: The Big Game (finale)

Kelly Leblonski was on the on deck circle, taking ferocious swipes with the bat.

Towanda watched, keeping her face impassive, but noting nervously that Kelly always looked a lot bigger with a baseball bat in her hands. Then Kelly stopped and seemed to focus her fury in one searing glare while Towanda bit her lip and did her best to glare back with equal intensity.

Without breaking their stare, Kelly tucked the bat under her arm, and spat impressively on her palms.

“Ewwww!” Connie’s shriek of disgust was clearly audible. “That is soooo gross, Kelly! Now we’ve got Kelly cooties all over our bat!”

Kate shivered with disgust, Towanda rolled her eyes but Devola grinned from the outfield, liking the strong gesture and resolving to try it herself.

Kelly took a deep breath and Towanda felt herself get smaller, almost as if Kelly was sucking everyone’s air into her own lungs. Then Kelly strode to home plate and stood ready, a steely gaze of determination in her small gray eyes.

Towanda felt the sweat on her palm stick for an instant as the ball left her hand, lofting high into the air.

“Ball one.”

Kelly grinned and waggled her bat mockingly then used her hand to outline the strike zone. She stared at Towanda, daring her to lay down a strike.

Towanda glanced at Faith who tipped her cap, signaling for a walk. But Kelly made a kissing sound and Towanda felt her face flush and shook off her coach’s signal.

She threw the strike and Kelly’s bat was a shining arc, blasting the ball farther than any seven year old had done before.

The crowd was silent, hearing the smack as the ball hit the fence, barely three feet from the top and bounced back to roll quickly along the ground.

Kelly had already rounded second, the big girl pounding down the baseline to third.

Devola got to it first and fired it to Veronica as Kelly rounded third, elbowing Kate hard in the ribs her body angled to hide the action from both umpires.

Veronica grasped the ball, spun in place and fired it to Bettina. The ball arced, never even touching the ground as Bettina felt the thwock of its impact in her mitt.

Then Bettina thrust both hands out at Kelly who was racing like a freight train down the third baseline. Kelly slid, raising a cloud of thick dust and Lawanna sneezed once, feeling her eyes snap shut for the barest instant after Bettina made the tag.

Then Bettina felt Kelly’s hard rubber cleats smash against her shin and the catcher spun around to fall face down behind the base, the ball trapped under her body.

Lawanna’s eyes snapped open after sneezing and she felt the only panic she had ever felt as an umpire, knowing that she had not seen the play. She called “time out” and urgently beckoned Hallie who came in on a run then bent down with Faith, Willow, and Tara by her side to help Bettina to her feet and make sure that she was okay. Bettina's leg hurt a little, but not enough to stop her from grinning as she stood up, the ball clutched tightly in her hand.

Cordelia rushed up. “Kelly is safe! Bettina dropped the ball after the tag!”

Kelly stood up, "I saw her! She dropped it! Then she laid on it!"

Lawanna hesitated, she quirked an eyebrow at Hallie who read the situation but shook her head to indicate that she hadn’t seen the play.

Cordelia was persistent. “It's Kelly's word and my word against Bettina's. If you didn’t see it then the tie goes to the runner and you have to call her safe!”

“Wait!” Willow spoke rapidly, “Look, I’m not exactly a softball-gal okay, although I did do research online at ASA, NSA, and USSSA sites—“

Cordelia glared at her, “Do you have a lisp or something!”

“Just a lot of s’s.” Willow turned back to Lawanna, “but Veronica threw the ball and it went all with the flying and none of the bouncing right?”

Lawanna nodded, looking somewhat dazed by Willow’s babble.

“Then Bettina tagged her and fell on the ball.”

“We saw that, Willow!” Cordelia cut in, “But Bettina dropped it.”

The little girl shook her head angrily, but Cordelia over-rode her protest, “And then she scrabbled around in the dust and used her body to cover it up then grabbed the ball and said that she still had it which is a complete lie!”

Willow looked at Lawanna, “If Bettina made the tag with the ball and kept the ball in her hand then Kelly is out, right?”

Lawanna nodded. “I saw her make the tag, so if she didn’t drop it afterwards then you’re right, Kelly is out.”

Cordelia was triumphant, “But there’s no way to prove it!”

Willow raised her head, grinning like a science fair winner. “Yes there is!”

Lawanna stared at Willow, “How?”

“If Bettina lied and the ball rolled in the dust or she grabbed it out of the dust, then there will be dust on the ball under her hand and on the palm of her hand. If she held it tight the whole time her palm won’t be dusty and the ball will have a cleaner spot under her palm.”

Lawanna bent down and looked at Bettina, “Hold up your hand, Bettina.” Bettina opened her hand. Her palm was sweating and clean and the ball had a palm sized spot without any dust. Lawanna straightened, shouting with relief that her call was accurate, “Out!”

The Reds erupted into cheers.

Lawanna moved off a few feet to whisper to Hallie, “This game is crazy. Feels like I’m in a Sherlock Holmes movie or something.”

Hallie grinned and nodded, and then Lawanna had her bring the watering can to wet the dust down by home plate. Finally Lawanna gestured for Hallie to take her position back out on the field and resumed her own spot behind the plate. “Okay, batter up.” She clicked her stopwatch as Tizzie Stilton marched up to the plate.

Tizzie divided her glare between Lawanna for calling Kelly out and Towanda for being her arch-enemy.

As the first pitch floated across the plate, Tizzie apparently bent over the plate as she sneezed and was hit with the ball.

“Take your base.”

Tizzie waved at Towanda, shouted “thank you” and walked insolently to the base.

Billie walked up, dark eyes glittering. She took her stance, not moving a muscle, tensed and ready.

“Ball one.”

Towanda threw a strike and Bille lashed out, smashing a fly midway between second base and the fence. Debbie, who had played deep sprinted towards the ball which seemed to hang for an instant then hurtled towards the ground. Debbie missed the catch by no more than eight feet but caught the ball on the bounce and threw it to Connie who held Tizzie at second and kept Billie’s hit to a single.

Towanda licked her lips, suddenly remembering her captain’s duties, and shouted, “Okay, force on first, second, and third. Come on, you guys!”

They could here Mouse’s piping voice from the fence by right field, “Go Reds!” and they all smiled and breathed in, getting ready as Del Kinnemukka stepped up to the plate.

Faith beckoned the outfielders closer.

The first pitch was low. “Ball one.”

Del took the second pitch, knocking a surprise hit over Lisa’s head. The ball rolled and Mouse ran up to it. She couldn’t throw so she ran up to Lisa who snatched the ball gratefully from the little girl’s hand and hurled it to home.

Bettina snagged the ball and Tizzie turned and raced back to third, while the Reds breathed a sigh of relief quickly followed by a gasp as Mo Morrison stomped up to the plate.

Faith gestured the outfielders deep and Mouse, for one, was glad to turn tail and run back to the safety of the fence.

Meanwhile Veronica recalled Mo’s shots between the pitcher and second and positioned herself accordingly.

Towanda thought hard; walking in a run was out of the question. She had to pitch to the big girl. She thought. Okay, low strikes. Get her to ground out if I can.

“Ball one.” Towanda frowned, Too low.

Towanda wiped the sweat off her forehead and looked around at her team before taking a deep breath. “Play on any base and home plate!”

Mo loosened her shoulders, stepped out of the batter’s box, and whipped the bat around in a few practice swings and stepped back into the batter’s box. She bared her teeth and glared up at Towanda who glared right back.

The pitch left her hand and seemed to travel in slow motion as it crossed the plate. Instinctively Veronica bent her knees and sprang up at the crack of the ball hitting the bat. As the ball rocketed towards her, she threw her left arm up, snagging the ball in the webbing, while the force of the hit caused her to twist in the air and come down hard on her side.

Faith was shouting, “Turn two! Turn two!”

Billie was headed for third when she heard the smack of the ball hitting Veronica’s glove. The quick-witted first basewoman turned and began racing back towards second base just as Veronica rolled up onto her knees and hurled the ball wildly to Connie. Connie’s eyes widened, she took two steps towards first, speared the ball and reached her right foot out to lay her toes on the bag barely an instant before Billie crashed into her.

“Out on second!” Hallie shouted, then turned to see Tara running towards second base where Connie and Billie lay in a tangle of arms and legs. Tara offered Billie a hand up, but the girl turned away and stalked back to her team. Connie, meanwhile, looked amazed by the recent turn of events but got quickly to her feet.

Faith and Willow stood leaning over Veronica who was still on her knees, gasping, “Wind - knocked - out,” but she was grinning, “Got ‘em!” She bumped fists with Faith who nodded and said, “Way to go, champ!”

A beaming Veronica was helped her to her feet just in time to be surrounded by the other Reds who were laughing, screaming and jumping for joy.

Lawanna was smiling, waiting to see that no one had been injured before she made the call on the play. “Listen up! The runner crossed home plate after Billie was out on second, so the run doesn’t count. The score is 24 to 15. Both teams, grab a cup of water. Then Queens, take the field. Reds, you’re up!”

The Reds ran in, jumping together in a big clump as their coaches dispensed hugs and advice. Willow and Faith conferred and Faith addressed the group, “Guys. Listen up. Gotta keep moving.”

Willow nodded, “Even if Tizzie walked you all, we’d lose because we wouldn’t get those ten runs in time.”

Debbie was big eyed, “So what do we do?”

Faith took charge, “Swing at the close ones, don’t try for walks. Willow, get everyone lined up so there’s no time wasted waiting while we bat.”

There were a few anxious faces and Tara smiled, “Is there anything I can do to help you hit?”

Mouse’s small worried face looked up, “Can you sing to us?”

Tara’s smile faltered at the sight of Queens shooting them dirty looks and Kate spoke up, “No, Mouse. Tara can’t do that, it’s too hard.”

Tizzie passed by on the way to grab her glove, “Yeah, and singing is too much like your stupid cheers, Dumb-ola! Tara knows how pathetic they are!”

Tara’s chin came up at the insult to one of her girls and she beckoned to the group. “Come on, let’s sing for the Queens since they serenaded us!” She got them all together and grinned, “H-how about ‘Fish and Chips and Vinegar’?”

Devola’s eyes lit up with hope, “You mean the cheer?”

Tara shot her a mock-stern glance, “No, I mean the real words but if you hear something different in your heads,” she shrugged and smiled, “then that’s not my fault.” She led the round noticing that one voice, surprisingly melodic and powerful for a seven year old, persisted in singing the insulting cheer lyrics. She also noticed, without surprise, that the one voice belonged to Devola. After the song, she winked at Devola who winked back while the rest of the girls could barely contain their triumphant laughter at having released their ‘secret’ cheer.

Devola grinned, “You know what? I like singing.”

Tara gave their rebel a hug, “You know what? I do, too.”

Faith clapped Tara on the back, “Like it when you go all Momma-bear, T. Gives you an edge.”

Lawanna called for the extra balls to be thrown in. The moment had come.

Tara jogged over to coach first base while Faith coached third, leaving Willow to manage the batting order and encourage the kids.

Willow gave Kate a double hug and the little girl, stepped up to the batter’s box. She tensed then took the first pitch belting out a fast grounder that streaked between first and second stopping midway between Mo Morrison in right field and Celia in center. Kate raced around the bases and landed a double.

Devola was in the on deck circle, swinging and singing:

I feel hit-y, oh so hit-y, I feel hit-y and witty and gay
And so hit-y, gonna smash it out the park today!

Tizzie yelled, “You can’t sing, Devola!”

“I can to!”

“Can not!” Tizzie yelled to Lawanna, “Make her stop!”

Lawanna fought back an amused smile, “Batter up!”

Devola danced her way to the batter’s box, twirling twice on the way, then stood and batted her eyes at Tizzie.

The first pitch was high. “Ball one.”

Devola was humming her little song.

Tizzie yelled, “Stop it!”

“Stop what?” Devola asked innocently, “Standing? Breathing? I can’t hit lying down and if I stop breathing I’ll die.”

“Wish you would,” Tizzie muttered.

The next pitch was high. “Ball two.”

Tizzie glared ferociously at Devola who grinned back and blew her a kiss.

“She kissed me!”

Lawanna spoke, “Play ball!”

Devola shrugged innocently, “I’m just trying to be a good sport!”

Tizzie threw the next pitch, perhaps unconsciously aiming at Devola.

“Inside. Ball three.”

Tizzie’s fair skin flushed and she focused on Kelly’s upraised mitt.

“Strike one.”

Devola gripped the bat, swinging and missing on the next pitch.

“Strike two.”

The two girls locked eyes, then Tizzie grinned and moved her arm back for the pitch just as Devola pursed her lips into a kiss. Tizzie clutched the ball tighter and released it an instant slower as it arced up high.

“Ball four. Take your base.”

Devola blew Tizzie another kiss and skipped to the base.

Bettina seemed to be examining two softballs that Faith held in her hands.

“Batter up.”

Bettina gave one of the softballs a last ferocious squeeze then stepped stiffly up to the plate, the bat clenched tight in her fists.

The pitch came in low but arced up slightly over the plate and Bettina swung and missed.

“Strike one.”

The big girl started shaking with anger and swung at the next pitch.

“Strike two.”

Bettina had tears in her eyes and stepped out of the batter’s box, calling down to Tara who was waiting for her by first base. “I wanna hit the ball, Tara! I wanna hit the ball for you!”

Tara smiled and used her hand to send the sign Bettina had taught her that said, “I love you.”

The little girl blushed, grinned, and stepped back into the batter’s box. Her dark eyes sharpened and the ball came at her slowly, seeming to hang in the air like the piñata at her friend Carmen’s birthday party. She felt a fierce surge of joy and her bat was a silver arc, booming against the ball.

There was a collective gasp from the crowd as the ball flew up, up, up and over the fence.

Bettina saw it all happen with her mouth open, then suddenly the silence ended and she could hear her friends screaming, could see Tara jumping for joy, and Bettina began a slow jog around the bases before being mobbed at home plate. She was hugged, punched, patted and fist-bumped by a horde of friends but it was Tara’s kiss on her forehead that meant the most.

Mouse swallowed and tucked the bat awkwardly under an arm while she wiped her sweating palms down the legs of her pants. Then she grabbed the bat again and stepped up to the plate.

Tizzie threw the first pitch before Mouse had even lifted the bat.

“Strike one.”

Willow walked over to Lawanna. “She wasn’t ready.”

Lawanna was patient. “Once she steps into the batter’s box, the pitcher can throw the ball. So she needs to make sure she’s ready before she steps up to the plate.”

Willow backed away, suddenly realizing that time was running out.

Mouse rested the heavy bat on her shoulder.

“Strike two.”

The little girl felt her tummy get cold as she stared at Tizzie’s mean face.

“Ball one.”

Mouse smiled timidly, hoping that she could walk to first base again.

“Strike three.”

Kelly fumbled the catch deliberately and leaned in as she picked up the ball to whisper, “Stupid strike-out cry-baby,” before throwing the ball back to Tizzie. She smiled, watching the little girl’s shoulders slump as Mouse sniffled and walked back to Willow for another hug.

Veronica stepped into the batter’s box then froze, scarcely breathing as Tizzie smirked and threw a low pitch that bounced on the plate.

“Ball one.”

Tizzie straightened, focused, but threw a little high while Veronica remained silent and hard-eyed.

“Ball two.”

Tizzie glared at Veronica for making this harder than it needed to be. She pitched a strike and Veronica swung and missed while Tizzie breathed a sigh of relief.

“Strike one.”

Then Tizzie relaxed and released her third pitch.

“Ball three.”

Tizzie gripped the ball so hard she felt the stitching press against her palm. She fired it faster than she meant to and Veronica’s bat whipped around in a blur of motion and the ball rocketed straight for Tizzie’s head. Tizzie ducked instinctively and the ball shot through the hole between Lulu at short-stop and Hannah on second. It raced past Celia in center field who turned to run after it as Veronica was rounding first. Then Celia ran up to the ball and turned, firing the ball at Hannah but Veronica had rounded second and was barreling down the baseline towards third.

Hannah hurled the ball to Delise Kinnemukka on third, who speared it and turned to run at Veronica who whirled and headed back towards Hannah who reached out to catch the ball. Veronica jerked to a stop, turned back and ran for third.

Both teams were screaming.

Del snagged the throw from second and Veronica turned only a few feet from Del who eagerly threw the ball back to Hannah, but Veronica then turned and sped past Del. Hannah threw the ball back to Del and Del turned, throwing wildly to Lulu Ballard who was racing to back up third base. The throw flew past Lulu and Veronica stepped on the corner of the bag and saw Faith signaling her to run home. The little girl put on a fresh burst of speed. Lulu chased the overthrow and cocked her arm to throw to home, but Veronica had already crossed home plate.

“Safe.”

Veronica stood sweating, panting and smiling as the whole team mobbed her. Then Faith said, “Knew you could do it, kid,” and Veronica felt herself smiling back at her coach.

Lisa stepped immediately into the batter’s box, bat cocked.

She blasted the first pitch just past the shortstop and was rounding first on Tara’s wind milling arm as Tammy Pam Carter ran up on the ball and scooped it up. Her throw to second base fell short and Hannah left the base to scoop up the ball, turning to see Lisa’s foot land on the base and stay there.

“Safe on second.”

Connie took the first pitch and smashed a line drive straight into Tizzie’s ankle. Tizzie hopped on one foot as the ball bounced off her and rolled towards first base. While Billie raced over to scoop up the ball, Connie passed her and landed on first before Billie could make the play.

“Safe.”

Tizzie clambered up from the ground and glared at Connie on first and at Lisa who had made it to third base.

Cordelia called ‘time out’ to examine Tizzie’s ankle and make sure the little girl was able to continue. Tizzie walked around and assured Cordelia and Lawanna that she was able to play.

Meanwhile Willow hurried over to where Faith was coaching third base, “Faith,” she whispered, “We’re running out of time!”

Faith nodded, tipped a wink, “Don’t worry, Willow.” Faith raised her voice slightly, knowing that they were being heard. “Tizzie is getting tired, she’ll walk us right to that trophy!”

Willow shook her head, confused at first, then smiled slowly. “Strategy. Yes, all of the good. Walk to win!”

Lawanna called, “Batter up” and Tizzie turned to face Towanda and loosened her shoulders then glared at her rival captain. She sent a high pitch, still within the strike zone and Towanda lofted it out high enough that Celia in center field ran flat out to the fence as the ball bounced off the bottom and came rolling past her.

Lisa sprinted from third and crossed home plate.

Celia grabbed the ball in her hand and turned to find her cut-off girl.

Connie was approaching third base.

Celia threw the ball to Hannah on second but Towanda had slid into the base.

“Safe on second.”

Connie was more than halfway home when Hannah heard the screams and saw what was happening. She turned and threw the ball wildly in the direction of home. Kelly Leblonski jumped out of her crouch and ran to snatch the ball out of the air. She raced back, ball in hand as Connie slid into home.

“Safe.”

Willow grabbed Faith’s hands, “Six runs! We’ve got six runs!” She attempted to pull Faith into a Xander-style Snoopy Dance then left off, blushing when Faith stared her down.

Debbie was grinning nervously as she stepped up to the plate.

Tizzie smiled, confident of an easy out. She moved her arm back for the pitch as Debbie unconsciously began imitating Devola and wiggling her rump. Tizzie’s hand clenched and she looped the pitch over Debbie’s head.

“Ball one.”

Tizzie frowned at Debbie who began biting her lip.

The ball flew over the outside edge of the plate and Debbie didn’t swing.

“Strike one.”

Tizzie grinned and pitched the ball quickly, but it was too high for the shorter girl’s strike zone.

“Ball two.”

Kelly smacked her fist into her mitt, making Debbie jump and step out of the batter’s box. “Burn it in, Tizz! Come on! Right here!”

Tizzie nodded, tried to shake it off.

Debbie was wiggling again, even humming a bit of a cheer.

“Ball three.”

Tizzie stamped her foot down hard, furious at herself, and then winced at the pain from where the ball had hit her ankle.

She paused, taking a slightly longer stride and felt her ankle tweak as the ball flew short and actually bounced on the plate.

“Ball four. Take your base.”

Debbie breathed a huge sigh of relief and trotted happily to first base, then got a smile from Tara and a reminder to get into position to run.

Kate had swung and missed at her first pitch, earning a snicker from Kelly and a broad grin from Tizzie.

The next pitch was high and Kate swung hard, lofting a beautiful hit that went directly to Tammy Pam Carter. Tammy Pam gave a small scream as the ball landed in her upturned glove then began dancing up and down waving the ball in the air to show off her catch.

Tara whispered, “run” and Debbie raced for second, shorter legs churning while her team-mates screamed their excitement.

Cordelia screamed, “Throw the ball,” but Debbie was safe on second and Tammy Pam simply threw it to Lulu who looked around sharply, realized that there was no play, and relayed the ball back to Tizzie.

Devola grinned and did a reprise of:

She won the race, race, race!
Up to the base, base, base!
To win first place, place, place!
Yaaaaaaaaaay Deb! Yaaaaaaaaaay Deb!

Willow gave Devola a quick hug and Towanda gave her a punch on the shoulder. “Okay, Dev. Two outs, get on base!”

Devola nodded nonchalantly, already in character as a big league batter, and sauntered up to pause outside the batter’s box. She tucked the bat under her arm, looked impassively at Tizzie, and attempted to spit on her hands but nothing came out. “Hey! My mouth is dry. I can’t work up any spit!”

Connie hurried over, “Devola! Just get up there and hit the ‘mooning’ ball!”

“But I gotta have spit!”

Lawanna took charge, “Play ball.”

Devola grinned, “I got it!” She began licking her hands.

Tizzie groaned, “Ewww! You are so gross, Devola!”

Devola, meanwhile was delighted her new discovery, “Spreadable spit! Hey, maybe I invented something and—“

“Batter up.” Devola knew better than to mess with Lawanna and scurried into the batter’s box.

Tizzie shook her head, still grimacing with disgust, and pitched one right across the plate.

Devola swung, hitting the ball just over Hannah’s head on second base. She sprinted to first and looked up in time to see Debbie make it safe to third.

The Reds let loose with gleeful shrieks and started a steady clapping as Bettina walked heavily to the plate.

Bettina stood grimly in the batter’s box, eyes on the ball, and bat cocked.

“Ball one.”

Bettina smiled, happy to take a walk since her leg still hurt a little from the tag out on home plate. But the ball came right down the line and she swung, punching a line drive that shot over Del’s head on third and bounced fair along the third baseline before finally rolling into foul territory.

Tammy Pam raced after ball, snagged it while it was still rolling and fired it to Lulu.

Debbie had hesitated, but caught Faith’s signal and still made it home easily. Bettina ran as fast as she could and remained safe at second, knowing that she didn’t have any chance of surviving a rundown between Del and Hannah. Her leg was throbbing where it had twisted and she grimaced. More than anything, she wished that Towanda could hit her home so that she wouldn’t have to run, but Towanda wasn’t up.

It was Mouse walking slowly up to the plate, her bat clutched tightly in two small, sweating hands.

Kelly was behind her and Mouse knew that the big girl hated her. It made her a little scared but that was okay because there were so many big scareds that a little one didn’t really matter.

“Batter Up.”

She looked for Willow to be sure it was her turn and Willow nodded and smiled at her. Mouse tried to smile back but couldn’t, I think my smiler got broke.

She had struck out the last two times. Their plan wasn’t working any more. She breathed in and looked at Tizzie Stilton who was winding up her pitch.

Mouse stood shaking and gripping the bat, please please please please please.

“Strike one.”

The ball was coming again, please-please-please-please-please-please-please-please.

“Strike two.”

Mouse gasped and was about to tell Willow a secret in her ear, but Kelly yelled it out loud for everyone to hear, “The little baby peed in her pants!”

There was laughter from Tizzie, Billie, and a few of the others.

“Time Out!” Willow shouted, then she led Mouse out by the hand and Tara came running from third base while Lawanna shouted a few strong words about sportsmanship and staying quiet during someone’s turn at bat.

Willow knelt down and gave Mouse a hug. The little girl buried her face in Willow’s neck and hugged her back.

“Mouse, do you want to quit? You don’t have to play any more.”

Mouse’s eyes were huge as she stepped back to look up at Willow, “But they’re cheering for me.”

It was true. Devola was leading the whole team shouting:

Might-y Mouse!
Rock - the - house!
Might-y Mouse!
Rock - the - house!

Then she launched into the old cartoon song:

Here she comes to save the day!
Mighty Mouse is on the way!

Mouse looked back at Willow. “I can play but,” she paused and crooked her finger and Willow bent down so Mouse could whisper in her ear, “I went potty in my pants. Can I get new pants?”

“Hold on, I’ll find out and be right back.” Willow walked over to talk to Lawanna and Cordelia stalked over to join them.

“Lawanna, Mouse just wet her pants. Can we take time-out to have her change them?”

Cordelia thrust herself between them, jabbing her finger into a section of the camp manual. “See! Right here, time outs are five minutes except for injuries to a player. If she’s gone longer then five minutes you forfeit, you lose!” Cordelia smiled, “And you’ve already wasted a minute and 38 seconds.”

“Come on, Cordelia. She’s a little kid and she’s embarrassed. Give her a break!”

Cordelia smirked, “You did a great job quoting the manual to me, Willow! Now it’s my turn.” Cordelia looked at Lawanna. “Am I right?”

Lawanna nodded reluctantly and turned to Willow. “That’s what the rule says. Look, you have two outs.” She checked her stopwatch, “Mouse is your last batter.” Her voice softened, “It’s too bad, but the rules are the rules and we need to finish the game now.”

Willow nodded and walked back, then squatted down to hug their littlest camper. “Mouse you can stop right now if you want.”

“Will we lose?”

“Yes, but it’s okay. Don’t worry about it.”

Mouse met her eyes and swallowed. “Then I wanna play.” She walked back and stepped up to home plate.

“Play ball.”

The pitch came and Mouse froze, watching it, please-please-please-please-please-please-please-please.

“Ball one.”

Mouse gripped the bat with all her strength as the next pitch came. PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASE-PLEASE!!!

In the legend of the Reds, Mouse waited for the perfect pitch and swung. The truth was that the bat was heavy and it started to fall, and the ball hit it and bounced off.

Devola was the first to shout, “RUN, MOUSE!!!”

Mouse dropped her bat, took a few steps and started to trip as her batting helmet slid downwards, but she used her hands to catch herself and scrambled to her feet, running as fast as her shorter legs could go.

Everyone stared, amazed, as the ball rolled and stopped dead, half way between home plate and the pitcher’s mound.

Both Tizzie and Kelly were frozen, stunned that the little girl had somehow hit the ball.

Then Kelly ran to pick up the ball but stopped when she saw Devola heading for home and rushed back to cover the plate.

Tizzie realized it was up to her to pick up the ball, saw Devola now heading back for third and charged the ball, making a panic throw to get the force on first, but she threw it in foul territory and Billie had to take several steps off the bag to catch it.

The Reds yelled as Devola sped across home plate, tying the game while Bettina ran as fast as she could towards third.

Billie reached her long arm out and snagged the wild toss and started to run back to the bag. Mouse crossed first base and saw the number one mean girl running towards her. She panicked and started sprinting towards second, terrified at being caught.

Billie smiled, she threw a straight throw to second that was snagged easily. There was time to make the out before Bettina made it home.

Suddenly Mouse froze, standing right between the two bases.

Hannah froze on second base, wondering what the little girl was up to. She started running towards Mouse who turned and ran back towards first.

Then Hannah threw the ball back to Billie who caught it and was racing up behind Mouse to tag her.

Then there was a roaring from the Reds, Bettina had crossed home plate. An instant later Veronica turned and yelled, “Mouse!” while the whole team ran onto the pitcher’s mound for an impromptu victory celebration.

Meanwhile Mouse had heard her best friend’s voice and ran off the baseline and straight into Veronica’s arms. Then all the Reds grabbed her and she was hugged, kissed, danced with and cheered by everyone on the team.

Next Willow and Tara linked wrists and gave her a chair carry back to their cabin with the entire team dancing and jumping and shouting with excitement.

*************************************************

Mouse bounced eagerly in Willow and Tara’s arms and they finally set her back on her feet. “Party! Tell us about the party.”

Tara and Willow were twin deer, caught in the same headlights as Faith leaned forward confidentially. “It rocks.”

Devola grinned, “We’re gonna break about a million rules, right?”

Faith smirked, “Oh yeah!”

Towanda shoved forward, “And do stuff no other campers have ever done?”

Faith nodded, “I got it covered. You guys are gonna get a lift in Mr. Macready’s pick up truck, then camp all by yourselves. I got great food picked out and you can build your own campfire and swim at midnight and I’ll come get you in—“

“Hey!” Devola demanded, “You’re supposed to come!”

Mouse tugged on Faith’s shirt, “You have to come!”

Towanda nodded, “You’re our coach!”

Willow and Tara were nodding agreement and Tara spoke, “We couldn’t have done it without you!”

The other girls clustered around, patting Faith and begging her to come while Faith just stood there her eyes darting around as she was surrounded by their team.

Kate noticed it first. “Are you okay, Faith?”

Faith nodded mutely, then coughed, “Dust. Got some ‘mooning’ dust in my throat.” She swallowed again, “I’m comin’, huh?” She rubbed the heel of her hand almost angrily against one of her eyes, “Finch won’t let me.”

Willow cut in, “Then Tara and I will go ask her right now!”

“Red?” Faith swallowed again, “You’d do that?”

Willow nodded, “Hey, can’t go all champion celebrate-y without the Coach!”

Tara slid an arm around Willow’s waist and gave her lover a squeeze, “I’ll go with you, Willow. We’ll both ask her.” She turned to Faith with an understanding smile, “Hey, help the kids get packed, okay? We’ll be right back.”

Faith straightened, her cocky grin back in place. “That’s comin’ in five by five,” and she turned to get to work, relieved to get the kids moving and avoid being the center of attention.

Willow and Tara headed out the door then Tara turned to Willow, “Five what by five what?”

Willow shrugged, “Who knows?”

Mrs. Finch congratulated them warmly on their win and was pleased at Faith’s work with the girls. She agreed that the dinner of sandwiches, chips, fruit salad and regular salad could be served without Faith’s assistance as could tomorrow’s breakfast of oatmeal, fresh fruit, and sausage.

Tara and Willow hurried back to find all the kids’ overnight gear and sleeping bags piled onto the porch while a grinning Faith reclined on the pile and oversaw everything. “Hey T., I’ll take the kids, load up the truck with food and stuff, and give you and Red a half hour to pack up and meet us in front of the dining hall.” Faith grinned, “Now that I’m in charge, I’m gonna kick this party into overdrive.” She paused to think, Let’s see: cargo net, rope, and carabineers – that oughta do it!” Then she jogged off, the kids chasing after her excitedly.

The two lovers exchanged looks of mild alarm.

“Um, Willow did she say ‘cargo net’ and ‘rope’?”

Willow nodded, then trailed a finger down Tara’s cheek, her voice soft. “And she said half an hour.”

Tara felt her breath catch as Willow’s finger stroked her neck. Then the two lovers clasped hands, walked inside their room and locked the door behind them.

Dibs.

YEA!!! Knew they could do it. Now Faith can spend Cordelia's money on their victory party. Queen C (Faith's term) better not try to get out of the bet. It would be just like her to get Miss Bitch involved with "illegal gambling."

Can't wait for the next chapter.

Yay for excellent update-y goodness... Extra big yay for Mouse being the one who guaranteed victory for the Reds... I'm sure Bitch C is trying to cause problems for them... I love how much Faith really cares about the girls... Can't wait for their victory party and Willow's & Tara's own private party...

That's what I'm talking about! WOO! I'm so proud of Mouse right now. I honestly didn't expect you to go that way, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Of course, Cordy is gonna have something horrible planned....like get Willow and Faith in trouble for betting or something. Which will piss me off so so so so so much! I'm looking forward to this "party" and then the dance later on.

Wonderful update, my dear.

Ariel,

Game over. Woo and Hoo! Great ending. My favorite part was Faith being included in the celebration. You already know how much I love her as a secondary character, so to see her included and get all choked up about it, awww.

Looking forward to the party and whatever craziness ensues. I don't even want to think about that other person, ahem, this week. Just bask in the glory of the win. On a side note, happy coincidence, you and I have a little dialog overlap this week. Made me laugh when I read your update. You'll have to let me know what you think.

Great conconclusion to the game. Looking forward to next week!

Hooray!
I am in no way glad that the game is over, that hooray was purely because the reds won.
Yup.

And mouse saved the day. :bounce
Totally didn't see that coming. :glasses

I love your Willow & Tara moments, it goes without saying, but i'm saying it so you know, Y'know?
But i love what you've done with Faith, She's both strong and fragile, fierce and vulnerable. in many ways she's got more depth than even Willow or Tara.
Which is a good thing.

I am glad that the reds won and there is much opportunity for drama now. I imagine that cordelia is going to welch on the bet 'cos "Bets with losers don't count" and "what are you going to do about it?"

I mean, who are they going to talk to? Betting on the game? hoo, naughty! it's not like they can shame cordelia into paying up, everyone already hates her or is one of her flunkies and agrees with her.

Now Faith might scare her.
Sure cordelia can do the whole "i'll get you fired" thing, but Faith can simply shrug her shoulders and say "So what? it's a shitty job working for assholes, I've been out of work before. But if you try anything like that? i will HURT you before i go, in ways you can't imagine"
cordelia might believe it, even if it's not true, simply because from her wealthy and privileged point of view, Faith has got nothing to lose.

Anyway, i'm looking forward to the next bit.
And i'm not so secretly hoping for someone (Faith, Willow, one of the missing cabin leaders) to bring down the hammer on cordelia. she NEEDS to feel some of the pain she is inflicting.

Also Whee! i'm a flaming "O" now! :bounce

So I totally pulled a you today. Had some nice, thoughtful feedback written and my iPhone ate it. Of course it may have been because I was in a parking garage. But still, frustrating. :crash

So that was awesome. I say again, I usually cannot read play by play stuff, but I found myself literally on the edge of my seat. Because the Reds didn't technically have to win (though obviously, I wanted them to). But It would've been interesting either way and because Mouse was a big part of that, it made it even better. After Veronica, she's my second favorite. I am very curious about what Cordelia's going to do though. I'm guessing it won't be good but I can't imagine what it will be.

Loved too (though this has already been mentioned) how Faith got included in the whole "after-game activities." And of course she's got to be all tough and not show how much it actually means to her to be included.

Willow nodded, then trailed a finger down Tara’s cheek, her voice soft. “And she said half an hour.”

Tara felt her breath catch as Willow’s finger stroked her neck. Then the two lovers clasped hands, walked inside their room and locked the door behind them.

They are so sweet and just, well, I'm at a loss for words. I give you multiple thumbs up!

Check my post to Lexi above – thanks for your writing and how it helps me! :applause

I have no clue how that helps you, but I'll gladly continue to get updates like this. Can't wait for more!
Anya: I don't like the sound of this. They don't sound very ex-demon compatible.
Tara: Are you sure they're English? I thought English people were, um, gentler than uh... normal people.

Devola and Faith are both such delightful scoundrels and I love them for it!

Tara smiled and used her hand to send the sign Bettina had taught her that said, “I love you.”

Tara-love can move mountains!!!

She bumped fists with Faith who nodded and said, “Way to go, champ!”

Dunno why, I just love the little fist bump! I'm also the type of person who constantly calls people 'champ' so there's that, too.

I'm loving that Mouse saved the day, but I really wanna give the kids who made fun of her a good smacking.

OMG - Mouse was the hero of the game! That was just phenomenal!!! That one moment in time will stick with her forever cause that kind of thing is a memory she'll never forget. I totally loved it. The whole game was awesome, and I was trying to keep track of "who's on first" kind of thing, but you did a great job drawing us a picture in our head like we were seeing the whole game. That was no easy feat. It was great to see everyone step up and contribute to the win, even Veronica, and of course, that double play was AWESOME, and just made my day. :applause

Now let the party begin! Sounds like it'll be a blast. Can't wait to see what happens with that. The Faith being included part was so sweet too. Very, very nice touch.

My only worry, is of course, will Cordy try to seek some sort of retribution for the loss, especially worried for Veronica, but I'm hoping her friends, and Willow, Tara and Faith will keep anything bad from happening, but I guess I'll just have to wait to see what happens.

Great job, again!

Julie aka Ariel,

WOOHOO!!!!! And all because Mouse was smart enough to keep them distracted in the end! That just rocks!

Although I have to agree, knowing Cordelia she'll do something shady about the bet she had with Willow & Faith and I'm already feeling bad for Veronica...

MORE, MORE, MORE! Wanna see what happens next!

Ariel...

Super great ultra fantastic job on the softball game!! :grin I know that it took a lot of research and probably rough drafts with different colored pens, but you did it!!

A big awwwwwww, for sweet little Mouse who saved the day and did it in peed pants...now that's a trooper! I loved this character, which totally got me thinking about Lupus in original Bad News Bears:) Especially when you mentioned the helmet falling over Mouse's eyes.

The party sounds awesome, as does the 30 minutes prior...*wink* So glad they made a point to include Faith and make her feel part of the team. Let Cordy take her place as food server for the day. :p

Speaking of...I'm dreading her payback and the dance a little as well. The girls won't be able to be together at the dance and I fear that they'll be forced to canoodle with yucky boys.

Anyway, that was super and I'm looking forward to more!!

Hooray the reds won Yay!!!!!
I was on the edge of my seat for the entire chapter it was so exciting.
I really liked how Willow being knowledge girl helped during the debate.
the fish chips and vinegar reprise was extremely funny, as well Devola's other songs.
woo mighty mouse to the rescue. when i read the final pitch i couldn't help but picturing it all happening in slow motion.
I'll say that I'm worried that the latest victory by the reds will lead to even more villainy by Cordelia, every time she's stopped she becomes more vicious. from her perspective if she loses at summer camp and word gets out about it her position as queen bitch would be under threat,
glad Faith is getting included in the party really want to see what she has planned.

BuffyFan4ever:
Hail to the Dibs-Master! :applause :bow :applause
Gotta agree with Laragh – you’re on a roll!

YEA!!! Knew they could do it.
Hey, that makes one of us! Building that game was really hard! But your faith was right on the money and speaking of money . . . Faith will handle things on their return so stay tuned – a little advice from Richard will come into play!

Now Faith can spend Cordelia's money on their victory party.Queen C (Faith's term) better not try to get out of the bet.
I believe you’ll like the ending! Thanks for reading and giving the f/b love! :bounce

Maggie AKA leonhart17:
Yay! Party time!
:pinky :party :pinky and believe me, it’s JUST getting started!

And I love Faith getting choked up about being included! And Cordelia remains the biggest bitch in the world!
You’re two for two so far, girlfriend! :bow Thanks for reading! :flower

Zampsa19752001:
Extra big yay for Mouse being the one who guaranteed victory for the Reds
Hey, thanks for that. Mouse was a hero. Even if she had struck out, having the guts to stand up to that kind of teasing and hostility to show loyalty to her friends makes her a hero.

Faith does care about the girls, more than she’ll even admit to herself. Thanks for noticing! :grin

Can't wait for their victory party and Willow's & Tara's own private party...
And Tara’s and Willow’s party is coming right up! :love

fhiwda:
That's what I'm talking about! WOO! I'm so proud of Mouse right now. I honestly didn't expect you to go that way, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I want to thank you for pushing me for this game and helping to make it happen!

I'm looking forward to this "party" and then the dance later on.
And the party part is coming right up – promise! As for the dance, some surprises are in store so stay with me. And thanks for the f/b – I’m seeing you support a lot of us and it’s great of you to do it! :flower

Lexi AKA True_Love:
Game over. Woo and Hoo! Great ending.
Thanks! That coming from a Florida college softball player is golden to me!

My favorite part was Faith being included in the celebration. You already know how much I love her as a secondary character, so to see her included and get all choked up about it, awww.
Thanks, I love her, too. So it’s great including her.

As to our dialogue overlap? :laugh It’s bound to happen! Like how you explained it and yeah, I was planning to do that, too. But only if the right opportunity comes up.

Azirahael:
Mouse liked the balloons and you singing the Mighty Mouse song! And so did I! Yep, a little part of me is 4 years old trying to be one of the big girls, so anything nice you say to Mouse warms my heart!

Glad you like the W/T moments, thanks for that, but also glad for what you said about Faith:
But i love what you've done with Faith, She's both strong and fragile, fierce and vulnerable. in many ways she's got more depth than even Willow or Tara.
That means a lot. She’s important. I echo a lot of Grimm’s sentiments on how Faith had to fight such a horrible upbringing to uncover her true self as a hero. I try to show that struggle here, too.

So about them getting their bets paid off, you had a plan:
Now Faith might scare her. Sure cordelia can do the whole "i'll get you fired" thing, but Faith can simply shrug her shoulders and say "So what? it's a shitty job working for assholes, I've been out of work before. But if you try anything like that? i will HURT you before i go, in ways you can't imagine" cordelia might believe it, even if it's not true, simply because from her wealthy and privileged point of view, Faith has got nothing to lose.
So *YOINK* it will be used AFTER they get back from the party! Stay tuned for a twist or two along the way with that!

Also Whee! i'm a flaming "O" now!
Hey, Congrats! I’ll take that bounce and make it a double: :bounce :bounce so that we can celebrate together!

Allie AKA Babbles4Twillow:
Hey, thanks for reading and very touched that Mouse’s ‘I think my smiler got broke’ touched your heart! Appreciate the feedback! :flower

Jessica AKA beautiful_love:
So was “pulling a me” creating thoughtful feedback or losing it somehow? :blush Seriously, I’ll take the compliment!

Thanks for liking Veronica, she’s not cute or cuddly so she needs the love!

Glad you liked the finger trailing down the neck – here’s the rest and I hope ( :pray ) that you like it.

As to your writing helping me, it definitely does! And now you’ve fallen into my trap! *cue evil laugh* because you put it in writing that you will continue writing to get updates sooooo that means you have to keep writing!!! Oh the diabolical cleverness of me! :devil

faolan228:
Devola and Faith are both such delightful scoundrels and I love them for it!
And yes, their Scoundrel-hood is vital to success! Glad you can appreciate that! :party :eatme :party

So when Bettina hit it over the fence, you said:
Tara-love can move mountains!!!
Truer words were never spoken, my friend!

Glad you liked the fist bump and ‘champ’ between Faith and Veronica! Thanks for reading! :bounce

Wimpy:
Hey, thanks for being a big supporter of the softball games! :flower
OMG - Mouse was the hero of the game! That was just phenomenal!!! That one moment in time will stick with her forever cause that kind of thing is a memory she'll never forget. I totally loved it. Glad you liked it, definitely thought of you writing it. It’s real to me, too, and the ending was the first scene that I wrote in the big game – wrote it months ago, so I had to build backwards to make it work.

The Faith being included part was so sweet too. Very, very nice touch.
Glad you liked it! Faith is becoming more and more a part of their little group – she will really make her mark in the next post when the party kicks into high gear and I do mean HIGH!

Heather AKA vampyregurl73:
WOOHOO!!!!! And all because Mouse was smart enough to keep them distracted in the end! That just rocks!
Thanks! The little girl was panicking with Billie chasing her from first, but she was very brave to step up to the plate and be there for her team! Glad you liked it! :grin

Thanks for reading! As to your wanting to see what happens next – hotness will ensue! Hope you like! Thanks for reading! :flower

Shelby AKA Finey_McFine:
A big awwwwwww, for sweet little Mouse who saved the day and did it in peed pants...now that's a trooper! I loved this character, which totally got me thinking about Lupus in original Bad News Bears:) Especially when you mentioned the helmet falling over Mouse's eyes.
I got the helmet falling over their eyes from YOU telling me about some of your daughter’s early softball games! So another big thanks to you, McFine! :laugh

Glad you like the upcoming party and the *wink* party before it! Hope it meets with your approval.

So glad they made a point to include Faith and make her feel part of the team. Let Cordy take her place as food server for the day.
*YOINK* this idea HAS been used – stay tuned and thanks are also above the story!

Speaking of...I'm dreading her payback and the dance a little as well. The girls won't be able to be together at the dance and I fear that they'll be forced to canoodle with yucky boys.
First off, I love you for using the word ‘canoodle’ it’s an oldy but a goody! :lmao And as for the dance, I plan to throw a bunch of interesting twists into that one – so buckle up for safety!

Matty AKA Mgraham93:

Okay, big sigh of pure joy hearing that – thanks so much! :bow

the fish chips and vinegar reprise was extremely funny, as well Devola's other songs.
And more of the D-magic to come in the party story!

glad Faith is getting included in the party really want to see what she has planned.
This post is just the beginning and it only gets better. Thanks for reading and for your great ideas!

Willow nodded, then trailed a finger down Tara’s cheek, her voice soft. “And she said half an hour.”

Tara felt her breath catch as Willow’s finger stroked her neck. Then the two lovers clasped hands, walked inside their room and locked the door behind them.

Part 52: Celebration

Willow finished turning the dead-bolt and felt Tara’s arms around her and Tara’s body warm against her back. There was a hush, a moment of expectancy then Tara leaned down to brush her lips across the top of Willow’s ear and felt an unexpected softness. The top of her ear; soft like the fuzz of a peach. Then Tara’s smile widened at the endearing wonder of Willow-ear and she savored the softness with an exploring tongue, her warm breath fluttering against Willow’s neck. There were more kisses, lips and tongue and teeth marking a trail down the soft ivory of Willow’s neck and Tara knew that this was the journey she wanted to make, to know and love every inch of Willow’s body.

Tara felt Willow’s trembling, but her own hands were steady as she turned Willow around and pulled her into an embrace. It was enough for a while, their hearts beating against each other’s breasts. Then Willow used her body to push them both in the direction of their bed and broke their embrace long enough to strip and scramble under the covers.

“No,” Tara said softly, “I want to see you.” And Willow threw the covers back, wiggled her legs free and laid herself on their bedspread, offering herself to her lover.

Then the moment passed and Willow started to become nervous, “Tara, we have to hurry! We only have—“

But Tara’s finger was against her lips, stopping her speech, and Tara’s eyes were full of enchantment. Then she leaned down, pressed her full lips against Willow’s lips, and stopped Time. There was no longer any ‘hurry’ just ‘now’, an eternal instant, and Willow felt herself relax.

Their kiss was leisurely at first, a sensuous ramble that shared their breaths and sent their tongues gliding against each other. Then it became heated and they ravished each other’s lips and tongue, drinking each other’s kisses in a velvet dance of fire and desire.

They broke apart, gasping like divers too long submerged, and their eyes met again.

It was Willow’s turn, her voice tender with longing, “Take your clothes off, baby. I want to see you, too.”

Tara swallowed, then unbuttoned her jeans and slid them off her bottom and kicked them to the floor. She undid the shirt buttons, shrugged each shoulder in turn and let her work shirt slide off her arms. An instant later she yanked her bra off without bothering to unhook it, lifting it up until her breasts fell free with a bounce and swayed into stillness.

Suddenly Willow leaned up and offered a long lick down Tara’s sweating cleavage, then blushed. “Sorry,” she apologized, “That’s been on my mind for a while!”

Tara smiled back, “Mine, too.”

Then Willow cupped the creamy softness in both hands, feeling Tara’s nipples harden with arousal. Then Willow gasped as Tara pressed her warm wetness against Willow’s firm thigh. Then Tara scooted higher, rubbing against Willow’s hipbone while her knee ground against Willow’s dripping center.

Willow moaned, it was a tidal pull – primal and irresistible. She needed to be inside Tara so she slid her fingers down her own belly and curled them tightly so that Tara rode their welcoming stiffness while she ground her hot bud against the heel of Willow’s hand.

Willow felt a fresh gush of love juice, warm and slick on her hand. Her breath caught as Tara increased the force of her thrusts and arched her back more sharply, straightening her arms to brace herself and grinding her hips down. Willow saw Tara’s breasts swaying towards her and back with every thrust, nipples taut with arousal and Willow suddenly arched up, pulling a hardened nipple deep inside the eager warmth of her mouth.

Tara gave a throaty gasp of pleasure as Willow’s mouth continued sucking her breast. As she rocked back, Willow held her nipple inside her mouth and the pull sent jolts of pleasure to Tara’s molten core.

Willow felt Tara opening and she thrust up inside until she felt Tara’s heartbeat pulsing around her fingers as Tara’s body began surging towards release.

Then Tara dropped her head and Willow felt Tara’s hair sliding over her nipples and caressing her breasts as Tara moved faster and faster. Then there was a shattering stillness where every muscle tensed and sang and Tara’s love cries were clear and sharp on the afternoon air as she continued to come over and over again before collapsing on top of Willow.

They lay for a moment, rolled onto their sides, breathing into each other’s mouth – airy kisses of ecstasy shared.

Then Tara turned, blue eyes nearly incandescent. “Your turn, Sweetie.”

Willow swallowed as Tara’s wayward tongue meandered down the sweating dampness of her neck and chest then paused at a rosy nipple, peaked into arousal. Tara paused to pull the sweet morsel into her mouth, laving it with her tongue while her eager fingers teased the other into a similar state of aching need. Then she kissed them, tongued them, and made love to them until Willow was gasping and Tara knew that her lover was ready.

There was time; time for kisses down the smooth belly; time to look at the pouting bud almost hidden beneath the coppery curls. Time for small exploring licks from the tip of a curious tongue. Time to hear the music of Willow’s moans when she began licking up inside her then stopped to nip and plunder Willow’s thighs. That place, Willow’s inner thigh, so tender and soft. A secret place and she laid her cheek there to rest for a moment to smell the spicy sharp scent of her lover’s arousal, and see the droplets of juice shining on Willow’s lips.

Then she paused outside her lover’s opening and filled her so that Willow bucked and moaned, thrust and yearned for more. And there was more: Hot licks, on Willow’s sex that became kisses when Tara felt Willow-lips moving in response to her own.

Willow came and Tara lapped greedily at the sweetness flowing past her lips and Willow jerked and her breath rasped and groaned and finally keened its final release.

Their bodies clasped again, pulled together by a force of nature as they melded into each other and rested, drawing deep draughts of air together and sighing with comfort at being so loved and being so close.

Willow broke the silence, “You’re good at that.”

“Good at what,” Tara teased.

“You know, the love-thingy melt-y go-down pasta stuff!”

Tara giggled, “Oh that.” Then she said shyly, “I had a little trouble the first time. I h-had to figure out how to breathe.”

Willow laughed softly. “Me, too. Then I found out how to angle my nose so I could keep the air flowing.”

Tara nodded, “It’s funny how we both had that happen.”

Willow’s voice was tender, “Why not? I mean, this is us being lover-ly and we’re learning and,” she swallowed, “teaching each other.”

Tara smiled gently, “You’re a good student, Willow.”

Willow’s green eyes seemed to glow with intensity then she smiled, “Remember what I said? That I wanted to be an expert in ‘all things Taranian?”

“You are.” Tara ducked her head, “Do I, I m-mean, am I—“

“You’re wonderful, Tara. No one. Ever. Not like you.”

Tara nodded again, nuzzling Willow’s neck with her nose to cover her blush. “I w-want to know you, Willow. I w-want to know you for a long, long time.”

Willow’s voice was a whisper, “I want that, too.”

Then Tara tightened their embrace and rested, warm and safe in her lover’s arms.

*************************************************

Faith smirked at them from where she leaned against the truck, “Get everything done?” She winked, “Anything else you need?”

Willow spoke, “No needy-ness. All done. Packed tightly. Everything.”

Tara was able to return to practicalities, “What do you have planned for food?”

Faith beckoned and they moved around the back side of the dining hall. “It’s covered, T. Got hot dogs with the works, potato chips, and soda. S’mores and cocoa for afters. Sausage and more cocoa for breakfast.”

Tara hesitated, “Sounds good, maybe some apples, just for snacks and for breakfast, um, do you have those biscuits in the round cans?”

“Yeah.”

Tara grinned, “Well h-how about my secret family camp treat? Um, we n-need about thirty biscuits and a bag with a couple cups of sugar mixed with cinnamon and some nutmeg if you h-have it.” She paused to think, “Oh! And two or three cubes of butter and a couple of m-metal pie plates.”

Faith shrugged, “No worries, T. Got an ice chest packed with milk, butter, and some OJ. Also got a couple gallons of water, cups, a porta-potty, toilet paper and bags – everything you need!”

“First Aid kit?”

“In the truck. Hey, calm down, T. You look like you’re hyper-ventilating or something.” She smirked, “Or maybe Red is better than I thought.”

Tara blushed, dropping her eyes, and felt Faith give her an awkward punch on the shoulder. “Hey, I got your back. It’s covered.”

Their eyes met. “Thanks. Um, thanks for the help and the party ideas and for,” Tara’s voice was nearly a whisper, “for this past h-half hour.”

Faith gave a short embarrassed nod then turned, “Okay everybody! Mount up, we’re moving out!”

*************************************************

Cordelia stared up at Faith, who smirked and waved at her, then turned to Mrs. Finch, “Who’s going to serve dinner?”

Mrs. Finch clapped a friendly hand on Cordelia’s back. “Just the girl I was looking for! Why don’t you lend me a hand with the sandwich platters and salad bowls?”

Cordelia gasped, “Me, serve the food! That is just so—“

“—very kind of you to volunteer,” Mrs. Finch interrupted smoothly, “You’re being a marvelous sport, Cordelia! And I can’t say how much I appreciate your help! Teamwork, that’s the key!” Then she slapped a hairnet into Cordelia’s hand while Cordelia eyed it like some sort of spider that she didn’t want to touch. Mrs. Finch was all attention, “There, there, my dear. Let me help,” and before she knew it Cordelia was wearing a hairnet, dazed with horror, and being led into the dining hall while Faith snorted with laughter.

Tara and Willow, meanwhile, fell into each other’s arms, shaking with silent mirth only to look up and see Devola waving Lisa’s camera triumphantly aloft, “Got it! Cordelia making that squinchy face with the hairnet on her head!”

Willow shot a glance behind them, grateful that Cordelia was inside the dining hall. Then she and Tara finished loading their girls on top of sleeping bags, tarps, and various mysterious lumps in the truck bed. then climbed in themselves.

Towanda pointed suddenly through the back window of the truck, “Hey, Coach is all by herself!” Then the Reds’ captain grinned, “I’m gonna ride up front with Faith!”

Mouse’s eyes got big with excitement and she tugged on Veronica’s hand. “Me, too! Me, too! Come on, Veronica! I never get to sit in the front seat!”

Veronica nodded and Willow hopped out of the truck to help them out and make sure they were lodged safely in the cab.

Faith stuck her head out the window, liking the crowd gathered on the dining hall porch to see them off, “Ready to roll?”

A half dozen voices yelled, “Ready!”

Kelly Leblonski couldn’t resist, “Get lost losers!”

Devola shot back, “We won, dummy! Or can’t you count that high!”

Tara raised her hands for silence. “I think it’s time to go but first, let’s give the Queens their cheer. They played a good game and were hard to beat. So let’s cheer them like good sports and then we can go.”

The Reds decided to get it over with and even managed a reasonable display of enthusiasm as they chanted:

2 – 4 – 6 – 8!
Who do we appreciate?
Queens! Queens! Yaaaaaay

Then Tara listened more closely to the second chorus of the cheer and heard a lone voice chanting:

2 – 4 – 6 – 8!
Who makes me want to vom-i-tate?

Queens! Queens! Yaaaaaay

She looked around sharply at Devola who shrugged and blinked innocently up at her. Tara was just kneeling, preparing to stand and sit next to Devola for a little talk, when Faith put the big truck into gear and they lurched forward with Tara toppling face down on top of Willow and Bettina to a chorus of giggles from all the girls. She popped up grinning and the celebration was officially launched to “The Mighty, Mighty Reds” victory chant.

They drove to the stables but kept driving heading right through the meadow with the girls getting more and more excited about their mystery destination until the truck began to head in circles.

Connie looked around, “What the ‘moon’!” She stared through the cab window. “Oh my god, you guys! MOUSE is driving the truck!”

They pounded on the cab window and the truck stopped and everyone piled out while Faith slid nonchalantly out of the cab.

“Faith,” Willow sputtered, “Are you mega with the crazy? Mouse can’t drive!”

Faith grinned lazily, “She just did. Chill, Red. I got the brake and the gas, Mouse is just helping me out with the steering.”

Suddenly a mob of jumping girls was screaming for a chance to drive. Willow and Tara caucused briefly with Faith and decided to allow it since they were in a level field, the speed was incredibly slow and the truck would simply stall without an adult managing the clutch, brake and gas. Nine of the happiest girls in the world got to ‘drive’ knowing that the first rules had been broken and adventure lay ahead.

Dibs! :whip

Okay, I'm not gonna breakdown the W/T lovin', but it was good. I noticed how much more descriptive this entry seemed to be and I love that aspect of it. One thing though. It had a more mature tone than past gay-love scenes. I can't figure out if that was the use of your descriptions or that you intended for it to be that way to show how they have grown as lovers. Then the cute little dialog at the end discussing how much they've learned kinda pulled me to believe the latter.

Then Tara said that she wanted to know Willow for a long long time. That stuck with me. Maybe she is starting to think towards the future and knows deep down she wants Willow to be a part of it, even if she can't figure out how just now. I think she will be fighting that feeling as she is afraid to reveal her home life, so good angst there. It was subtle, but very telling.

On to the celebration, let's get this party started. Nice with with Queen C, you know I love that! Hairnet, camera, awesome. I love the close connection between Faith and Tara, of course, they had a nice little back and forth, that was cute and showed how their friendship has progressed. And then Faith with the 1st broken rule, letting the kids drive. I know their parents and Ms. Finch would freak, but I remember my babysitter letting me do the same thing. Those are some cool memories to have of childhood. Glad W/T went along with Faith and let the girls do it.

Looking forward to more celebration and rule breaking!

Neato!

You can't have an adventure without breaking Rules with a capital "R". :bounce

And Cordelia having a fit over serving and wearing a hairnet was some nice hubris there.

I hope the girls have a fun time, especially Faith, she deserves a little fun after all she put on the line. :kiss1

Looking forward to some celebrations! :flower

I must say I have a special place in my heart for Devola. I feel like she doesn't have the best home life with how negative she can be. She doesn't mind hurting others as long as they aren't her friends. This leads me to believe there is a reason she is super protective of her loved ones. She lashes out quickly. It just reminds me of someone I know.

I love how cute Mouse is...and how great everyone is with her...expecially Faith. It's awesome that Faith can be a decent role model for the kids when she wants to be.

Keep up with the great updates, please.
