Heh, gotta love Anya, willing to just throw the truth out there. I was worried Cordelia was going to put a wrench into it, even though it was nice that she knew Tara needed to talk.

Ahh great update. Willow and Tara started macking again, sigh. I loved the way Cordelia figured out Tara's object of affection and the way Anya brought them together. I also like the way you are mixing up the characters and how everything is sort of going the way it did, but sort of not, particularly the resurrection spell.

loved the update :)

it was smart of Tara to suggest Spike be the one to do the sacrifice. leave it to Anya to point out the obvious feelings between Willow and Tara. even though i didn't really care for the nerds on the show, its cool that you managed to work them into the story.

Great update :) Like Xita I really like how you have things the same but different. It's all very clever and interesting and it makes me want to know what happens next. (That's a hint to post another update) Oh and yes I like it that Willow and Tara took a step closer together although there has to be a whole heap of things that those two have to talk through :)

Yahh! Feedback

Postby jomarch » Fri Aug 02, 2002 4:43 pm

*Jae* - You are a great beta...that's all I have to say :D

*mollyig* - I really could'nt resist Andrew being in the closet ;) And I love having both Anya and Cordelia around because they really help move things along.

*Thanatopsis* - Initially I thought that I shouldn't have Cordelia think that Angel was who Tara was thinking about but then after I started writing, it came out that way :) and it was more fun having Cordelia realize not all blondes were attracted to Angel.

*xita* - Thank you :) . Yes, a lot of character combinations can be done and it's fun seeing how they would interact since we don't get cross-overs in the shows anymore.

*Grimaldi* - Thanks for loving the story and the smiley face. Like I said in the notes, smart chicks are so hot and I guess Willow knows that about Tara :D .

*Puff* - Another update??? Well, some of it is already with Jae. I will try and get over the flu and write some more soon. It's nice being able to look at Season 7 and say what wouldI do differently and then re-write it so I guess that's why t's coming out similar but different. THanks for the great and I am off to take some medication and read your updates :) .

Chapter 5a

Postby jomarch » Tue Aug 06, 2002 5:29 am

*Drakkenfyre* - Ohhh, a deal... well check your inbox and we'll talk ;)

*Jae* - You're bias and I love you for it :D

Spoiler Warning - It starts from Seeing Red and then completely veers off in all kinds of tangents. It covers both the Buffy and Angel universe for now.

Disclaimer - All characters, names and some dialogue etc belong to ME and Joss Whedon. However, due to improper usage and gross mishandling of characters and plot lines by aforementioned parties, it is with great pleasure that I (and all the other writers on the board) use them for the reading pleasure of kittens everywhere.

Rating - PG

Feedback - Yes, please. I would just like to thank everyone who did feedback. It is incredibly helpful and great to read everyone's responses to how the story is going so far and what everyone is anticipating will happen.

Notes - Again thanks to Jae for betaing and making sure I actually make sense. And well, Buffy's coming back…

Title : I Dream of Thee

Chapter 5a

Angel could always tell when he was dreaming, because most of his dreams revolved around walking in daylight with Buffy by his side. He would dream about doing mundane things like walking the dog, or washing the car, and through it all, he could feel the warmth of the sun on his skin and his love for Buffy in his heart. His dreams were always of things he wanted and could attain if he didn't stray from his path of redemption, but now, even that was taken away from him. For the past few nights, all his dreams were of the darkness and Buffy buried in the ground. Cordelia told him of her visions, of how she saw Buffy attacking Tara and Dawn and that she wasn't sure if their presence in Sunnydale was required to prevent that, or to make it come to pass. Angel wanted so much to believe that that was indeed the future and that Buffy was some how brought back. But his dreams were disturbing , because the last time he had dreamt of such darkness, it was due to Darla and her re-birth as a Vampire.

What truly frightened Angel was that if the Gods had truly made a mistake and had taken Buffy away before her time , then would they compound that mistake by bringing her back as the one thing that she was meant to fight against? It was that thought that made him contemplate leaving Sunnydale; If he and Tara and the rest left, then perhaps what Cordelia saw and his disturbing dreams, would not come to pass. It was a difficult decision, for if he was being honest with himself , getting Buffy back in any form would be acceptable to him, as long as she was by his side. However, he knew that Buffy, the woman he would always love, would never want to come back as a Vampire or something other than human.

"I…I think we should discuss going back to LA." Angel marveled that he could still sound logical and calm, despite saying the one thing that would irrevocably prove that Buffy was forever gone from his life and his mission for his humanity would continue, not for the promise of their future happiness, but because he could do nothing else.

"Angel…are you sure? We thought you wanted to…well you, know…stay indefinitely." Cordelia was extremely surprised. Despite her apprehension at not understanding her visions about Buffy, she thought that revealing them to Angel would give him some measure of hope.

"Man, I do miss the bright lights and big city but I'm with Cordy on this. Why the sudden turn around?" Patrolling nightly and training with Giles and the Buffybot made Gunn realize that he could fight demons anywhere and still have a good time. He was even getting use to having Spike hang around and even though he missed his turf back in LA, he knew that he was doing good work in Sunnydale.

Tara could sense Angel's apprehension and uncertainty and she knew that she was in possession of some of the answers he was seeking. The only problem was that it was not her secret to tell. Willow had just finished researching the spell and was going to approach Spike today and Anya was in the process of obtaining the urn of Osiris. "I…I think that maybe we should wait. Willow wants to tell us something tonight at the Magic Box."

Angel was amazed at the changes he noticed in Tara. He knew that some of it was due to Willow and the relationship that they had developed. She didn't stutter as much anymore and made eye contact more frequently. He would always be indebted to her for helping him in Pylea and would welcome her into his family, should she want to return to LA with them. But he could recognize the signs of being in love and knew that if given a choice, Tara would want to be by Willow's side. In fact, today was the first time in a long while that Willow was not next to Tara. They traveled everywhere together and despite the initial separate rooming arrangements, Cordelia had surreptitiously moved her belongings into Dawn's room leaving Willow no other choice but to move in with Tara. It was heartening to see both Willow and Tara smiling since the move and despite the somber situation, it proved that love could truly flourish under any circumstance.

"Well, it would be wise, then, to see what Willow has to say, but I am in agreement with Angel. Things seem to be well in hand here and we have done our best. Perhaps we should discuss returning to LA. Lorne called and said that Wolfram and Hart have stepped up their activities since discovering Angel was out of town." Wesley was glad to see Angel finally come to the realization that he needed to get back to his mission. He did enjoy his stay in Sunnydale and the help and support he provided this time around did go a long way towards erasing the memories of his past transgressions in the minds of all the Scoobies. He would miss them all, especially Tara, but his duty and his own fight was in LA and the sooner they all returned, the easier their farewell would be. Wesley wanted to ask Tara to return with them because, like Angel and Cordelia, he felt a kinship and protectiveness towards her. When Angel's Demon attacked Gunn in Pylea, it was Tara's quick thinking and bravery that saved the both of them. He knew that Tara would gladly join in their fight against Wolfram and Hart, but knew that her heart now belonged to someone.

When they first brought her back, he knew that she felt so unanchored and was desperately trying to hold on to anything that seemed familiar. He could understand her joy at discovering the tenuous bond to Willow but to him, that didn't signify much. However in the past five weeks, not only did their bond grow stronger and their relationship more overt, but the bond transformed from something unsubstantiated and fragile to one strengthened by love and magic. It was so natural a progression that none of the people around them questioned it when Willow started holding Tara's hand or when they shared a room. He just wished that the relationship could have started not out of the tragedy of Buffy's death, for that fact was still hanging over Willow and he knew would be the one thing that could affect the both of them. He already guessed that the news Willow wanted to share with them was magical in nature and most probably dealt with bringing Buffy back.

It wasn't that Wesley was totally opposed to the idea as he always knew of the deal Angel had made with the Powers That Be. It was just after his injury in their office explosion. Angel had sat in his hospital room and started talking about why he came to LA in the first place. Wesley had drifted in and out of consciousness, but the one constant thing was Angel's voice, thick with tears, in the background telling him about Doyle and the Powers That Be, as well as The Forgotten Day. If Buffy's death was not meant to be and if Willow had found a solution, then he would gladly help out to ensure that the mistake was reversed. He just hoped that the spell and magics Willow wanted to use did not come with any dire consequences. He knew that Willow's presence tempered Tara's feelings of fear and isolation and that in turn, Tara helped Willow with her own burden. It was just that Willow's guilt at Buffy's death was not a dormant one that would always reside within her; He could see that it was still growing and consuming her slowly. He wanted to discuss it with Tara but the since Willow and the blonde were inseparable, he never found an opportune moment but he knew now was as good a time as any.

"Tara, I was wondering…Well, it does seem that we do have some time and I was wondering if we could discuss some things." He was glad to see Tara nod and not question his motives. It would be difficult enough broaching the subject of her new relationship without the added pressure of trying to talk about it with Angel and Gunn still around. So he got up and steered her towards the kitchen, where he prepared himself for the task ahead by making some tea for the both of them.

Tara waited patiently as Wesley busied himself with the task of boiling water and setting out the cups. She knew that he wanted to talk about her relationship with Willow and was trying to build up his courage. Unlike Cordelia, Wesley never assumed that she was in love with anyone other than Willow and the only time he brought up their bond was a few weeks ago when he asked her if she was still having nightmares. It surprised her that he knew about them, but he was quick to assure her that Willow had only told him of them in order to obtain his advice on how best to deal with such matters. Tara was happy to share that the nightmares had not recurred and despite his outward joy, she noticed that his aura showed that he was a bit perturbed by her answer. But he continued on and asked if she was happy. She didn't have to answer then, as the smile that lit up her face more than conveyed her feelings to him.

"Well, it has seemed like time has flown by, hasn't it?"

Wesley, like Mr. Giles, had picked up the habit of cleaning his glasses when faced with a situation that he found difficult and was now polishing the lenses so vigorously that Tara was sure they would crack. She also realized that he was not really expecting her to answer and would continue to his point.

"Yes, it certainly has and so many good changes have occurred, despite the circumstance of our gathering. I just feel…no, I just would like to ensure that you fully understand what you're dealing with." Wesley wasn't sure how else to phrase it. His presumption that Willow did do the charm spell was confirmed by Tara's lack of any further nightmares and he was also sure that Willow did not ask for permission directly. However, it seemed like the ends really did justify the means, for once Tara was freed from the confines of her nightmares, she flourished mentally and physically. Wesley didn't want to take that away from her, but he knew that he would be remiss if he didn't at least warn Tara of Willow's disregard of some of the tenets of using magics.

Tara decided to make things easier for Wesley as even without his glasses, he was having great difficulty in getting to his point. "It's about, Willow and the magics, isn't…it." She managed to get it out without stuttering and rejoiced internally. She always considered the stuttering a form of weakness she carried from Pylea, as every time she got caught trying to make conversation with the other slaves, she received such severe beatings that it eventually led her to stutter.

Wesley looked relieved as he was having trouble getting to the point. "Yes, yes it is. I just think that despite Willow's good intentions, her use of magics has never been reigned in by any need to follow the rules." He could see Tara crinkling her brow at his comment and quickly added, "I have never doubted that she had probably saved lives and only used magic to help others and not further her own wants, but the meeting tonight…She wants to bring Buffy back, doesn't she?"

"Yes, we…we have a plan. I know you have reservations, but just hear us out." Tara could not disagree with Wesley's assessment of Willow's view of magic, but she trusted Willow and understood that this was the only choice. If Buffy was not meant to die and if all the people there agreed, they would bring the Slayer back.

"Alright. But Willow needs to-"

"Willow needs to what?…What do I need to do, Wesley?" Willow wanted to talk to Spike as soon as possible, but she felt that with Tara by her side, they would make a stronger case and therefore she stopped by the house. She never expected to find Wesley talking about her to Tara. She could feel the niggling sense of fear that he might have already told Tara of her charm spell. She wasn't ashamed of doing it and would probably make the same decision again if she was given the choice, but she was working up the courage to talk to Tara about it and didn't want Wesley to do it first.

"Willow, I didn't hear you come in." Wesley felt decidedly uncomfortable. He did respect Willow and knew that what he should have done was talk to the both of them, but he did not have time to regret past mistakes and needed to get his point across. "Willow, I wanted to talk to you as well-"

"Then why didn't you?"

"I guess I would have if I'd thought you'd listen," Wesley sighed and admitted the truth. He was so sure that Willow still didn't respect his opinions and that she had not taken to heart his advice on performing the warding spell

"So talking to my girlfriend about me, behind my back, was your solution? Gee, Wes, and they actually made you head of Angel investigations?" Willow recognized that she was being unfair and she could see Tara looking at her curiously, wondering why she was being so hard on Wesley. "I'm…I'm sorry. What do you think I'm trying to do Wesley?"

"Wesley let go of the breath he was holding, the situation could still be salvaged, if he was honest, and he hoped that Willow would be too. "Willow, I cannot imagine the strain and battles you have undergone…And I admire your fortitude and the fact that the magic you wield has all been self-taught. However, there are rules and respect that must be accorded when doing spells. Tara understands this and you should too."

Wesley's use of Tara's name shifted Willow's focus completely and she looked at Tara, willing her to say something.

Tara could feel Willow's gaze and understood that she was looking for support and affirmation, but only one word was echoing in her mind, and so when she opened her mouth, it inevitably came out as a question. "Girlfriend?"

Willow smiled then, once again, her girlfriend managed to break the tension and make her feel special. "Um, yeah as in partner of the girl variety. I mean you are, aren't you?"

Tara's smile and her response was answer enough, "Yeah, most definitely." and it alleviated the sting of her ensuing words. "And Wesley, has a point too, Willow. Magic has to be respected and it's something that has to be learnt along with the spells. The ability to do magic does not…it doesn't mean that you should. Some spells should not be done."

"Willow, magic can be a wondrous thing and I know that it has connected the both of you, but Magic can also lead you onto a dangerous path, a path that you may not be able to come back from." Wesley could see that they were getting through to the redhead. He just hoped that it would be enough.

Willow noticed the cups of tea on the kitchen counter and immediately took one in her hands, hoping that they were not shaking as Wesley's words resonated within her. They seemed almost familiar and ominous. She could tell that Wesley had not meant them as a threat. but in her mind the words echoed as a warning of things to come. She was trying to mask her unsettled feeling so that Tara wouldn't be unduly alarmed. However, she knew that she would have to face the issues soon, just not now.

Tara could feel Willow's almost imperceptible shift in her mood and immediately moved to her side. She gently removed the cup from Willow's hand and replaced it with her own. They were stronger together and that was what Willow needed now; she was rewarded when she felt Willow gently squeeze her hand.

"We, uh, need to go and see Spike. But…I…You're right, I need to respect magic more and I do understand that it should not be used frivolously. I'll explain more tonight, but trust me when I tell you that this spell needs to be done. Please!" Willow was glad to see Wesley nod at her words. Now all they needed to do was tell Spike.

---------------------------------------------------------

"Doesn't a fellow stay dead when you kill 'im?" Spike couldn't believe that Doc was still around. He was sure that he’d managed to kill the bloody warlock.

"Look who's talking."

"Come on, Doc. Let's you and me have a go." Well, even if he didn't succeed the first time, he would just have to try harder and kill more viciously. He was a Demon after all.

"I do have a prior appointment..."

"This won't take long." God! Spike hoped that when he was the Big Bad, he never sounded so smarmy and stupid.

"No. I don't imagine it will."

It was absolutely thrilling to Spike to be able to fulfill Doc's prophetic words as he stepped towards the warlock, ducked and tripped him. It was done with such precision and grace, that Doc didn't even have time to scream as he fell off the tower. Dawn was looking at him with such relief and she was speaking to him only her words were being drowned out by a banging sound, so loud, it distracted him from his task at hand.

---------------------------------------------

"All right already!" Spike awoke with a start and immediately realized that it was a dream; Number thirty-eight, he intoned silently as he made his way to the door of the crypt. He could hear Willow and Tara outside and by the sound of it, they wanted to come in rather badly.

"Bleeding Hell! Can't a Vampire get any sleep anymore?" He asked as he swung open the door and swiftly stepped aside to avoid the lazy rays of the afternoon sun.

"Sorry." Willow said, not quite meaning it, but she needed Spike in a better mood if he was to agree to her plan. "We didn't mean to disturb you, but we need your help."

"Yeah, well pet, you weren't too helpful with the Buffybot, if I recall. Seems to me, I don't really feel like helping."

Tara could feel Willow tense up beside her and decided that perhaps the best way to get through to the surly Vampire was through his heart. It was an organ that he did not need to live, so he pledged it to the Slayer and through that act, Tara sensed that he gained back a small shred of humanity. "Spike, it's for Buffy."

Spike always wondered what it would take to feel his heart ; He wasn't expecting it to miraculously beat again, but he wondered what it would take to just to know that it was there and existed because it belonged to someone. In his long life, he had loved exactly three women: Cecily was a mistake, Drusilla was an adventure and Buffy was his conscience. Just hearing her name was enough to make him want to be better; to be human. "What about Buffy?"

"We're bringing her back."

So, with those four words, Spike realized that even soulless Vampires could feel hope. "Tell me what I have to do."

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"Hello and welcome to the Magic Bo-, Hey Tara, I'm so glad it's you." Dawn almost shrieked with delight. Anya was out running an errand for the evening and as she didn't want to lose any opportunistic business, she made Dawn man the counter in her short absence.

"Hey Dawnie. How are you? Did Anya leave you in charge?" Tara smiled warmly at the young woman. "Isn't Anya here?"

"Yes, she did and no she isn't. She said she needed to check out an urn or jar or something. So where's Willow?" Initially, Dawn's only template for true love was Angel and Buffy, but just witnessing the travails and tribulations of that relationship made her realize that love was never enough. It was obvious that certain things were insurmountable despite the existence of true love, it couldn't last. Regardless of repeated viewings of the 'Princess Bride,' true love wasn't enough. Yet, Willow and Tara made it seem easy. Dawn could tell they loved each other and just being in their presence, she could feel their love. Willow was like Willow again and Tara was special as well. She made all of them feel good about themselves and she made Willow smile; not only on the outside but also from within. If that was what true love could be, then perhaps the world that Buffy saved wasn't so bad after all.

"She's coming, she um, she and Spike are also running an errand. Guess it's just you and me."

"Cool, I'm really glad you're here. I mean, not only here…here but you know staying. I thought you may go back with Cordelia and Angel and the rest, but now that you and Willow, well, you're staying right?"

Tara never really thought about leaving. Truth be told, she never really thought about anything except Willow. But Dawn was right. Angel and the rest could not stay in Sunnydale forever and they were already discussing going home. It was just that to her, LA really wasn't home and the home from her nightmares existed somewhere out there. She just wasn't sure if she really wanted to find it. Right now, the only thing that felt remotely like home to her was Willow. However, she wasn't sure if their budding relationship and inexplicable bond was enough impetus for her to ask Willow for a commitment if she stayed. Adding to that, she still had to deal with her past as it was something that she was hiding from Willow and it weighed heavily on her. Maybe the answer would be not to go with Angel, or to stay here, but instead to confront her past.

Dawn was quite surprised that Tara wasn't answering right away and the surprise slowly turned to dread as she noticed the somber expression on Tara's face. "But, you have to stay. I mean, Willow expects you too. I want you too!"

"Sweetie, I…It's not that simple." Tara didn't want to make Dawn cry, but she couldn't agree to something that she wasn't sure of.

" Yes it is. It's because of me isn't it? You don't want to stay because of me!"

"No, no, Sweetie. It's not you. I just…I'm not sure where I belong…" Tara wanted so much to tell Dawn about her insecurities, but the teen was burdened with enough hard truths. Her sister spent her life fighting Demons and died due to it; Knowing Tara may be a Demon would only hurt Dawn further.

"You belong with Willow and with us." Dawn sounded so adamant that Tara almost believed her.

"She's right, you know." Anya's own clear voice chimed in. "You belong here as much as anyone else, even more so, on account that Willow seems glued to your side half the time." Granted, she wanted Tara to stay for purely selfish reasons. Due to the presence of the blonde, Willow made the effort to reach out to Xander and although he was still morose, he did talk to her more and held her at night.

"How do you know I belong here? I mean, I don't even know that."

"Well, you're good with the magic and hey, look, this is a Magic Shop. And…and you're into women and Willow's into you and what else do you need? I mean with the magic, your big blue eyes and little girl lost air, you should work here, customers will love you… That's it, I'll get Giles to hire you and we'll be raking in the big bucks. Of course, by that I mean you'll have a salary, none of that commission business. I mean, what else do you need to know?"

Tara couldn't help but smile at Anya's commerce skills, but she knew that a job offer and Willow's continual presence by her side, no matter how tempting, still did not answer the most pressing question about her past and Demons. "I guess I want to know more about who I am and where I came from. All I remember is that I'm Tara Maclay and I think I use to live in Benson, Arizona and my family probably still lives there. Maybe I should go…But I ...Is it better not to know?"

"What about Willow?" Dawn asked. Willow was smart and could solve any puzzle or answer all the tough questions and maybe she could help Tara answer this one.

"What about Willow? Um…I mean me?" What was it today that everyone wanted to talk about her behind… or in both cases today in front of her front? Willow was surprised to see Anya, Dawn and Tara looking so serious even before their big 'Buffy Resurrection' discussion.

"Tara may leave." Dawn added tearfully. "She's not sure if she should stay and it's typical right? You get put into people's lives and since they didn't want you in the first place, the best thing to do is to leave them behind. I mean, Buffy wanted to leave so badly, she killed herself."

"No!" All three women's voices joined in. Even Anya knew how wrong those words were and Willow immediately went to Dawn. "Listen to me. Buffy would never kill herself willingly. She loved you and wanted you so much and she loved us too. That's why she did the only thing she could to ensure that we all survived. Only it wasn't her time, Sweetie. And, well…" Willow noticed that Giles, Spike and the rest were slowly making their way into the shop.

"I'll explain soon, I promise" She reached out and gave Dawn a quick hug before going to Spike. As she passed by Giles and Xander, she wondered how they got so old so quickly. She used to think that despite Giles' gray hairs, he looked distinguished and robust and Xander filled out so well since High School and was no longer the skinny boy with knobby knees. Now, Giles just looked old and Xander was slumped. They needed to do this. Everyone there needed a leader and Buffy was the only one who filled that position.

"Did you get it?" She asked Spike.

"Yeah…Your chant worked like a charm. Little bugger came right up to me and well, he ain't going home to mommy tonight, that's for sure." As he handed over the vial filled with the vino de'madre.

Willow sent up a small prayer to the Goddess for the sacrifice and hoped that she would never have to do something like this again. "Hey guys…We're glad you're all here."

Tara walked up to Willow to stand next to her as she knew that this was the time the redhead needed the most support. She saw the gratitude in her eyes and disregarded her own initial misgivings as she leaned in to give Willow a quick kiss. "Courage," she whispered as she pulled away.

"This is so difficult for me because the past month has been the worst and best one of my life. I…I lost my best friend in the whole world, but I also found the one reason that keeps me in this world." She looked at Tara then and grasped the undeniable fact that if the blonde was not there, she would not have made it through the month. She could see the looks of astonishment on Giles and Angel's face and the looks of understanding on Cordelia and Spike's. "Please, listen to what I have to say. I know that we regret what happened to Buffy and if we could, we would change it in a second. Well, I think we can."

"Willow, surely you can't be seriously considering this." Giles immediately jumped up and was almost in Willow's face.

"She is serious, G-man and stop calling her Shirley…" Xander could feel the need for a drink and couched it in one of his feeble jokes. He hoped that Anya didn't notice his sweaty palms and shaking hands. The last thing he needed was a lecture on the responsibilities he carried on his shoulders.

"I will not allow this talk. The magics you are discussing are dangerous and you are too young and foolish to have thought this through." Giles couldn't believe his ears; These children, these dear, naïve children never dealt with the consequences of Dark Magic before and he would ensure they never did.

"But Giles, I have thought it through and we fully understand what we are proposing. I overheard Angel's story. I know, we know that Buffy wasn't meant to die." Willow went to Angel and made him look at her before she continued. "If we found a way to change it, to get her back…If we know that it was not her time, that because it wasn't, she may be stuck somewhere, in limbo…Would you want us to do nothing?"

Angel understood his dream then. If Willow was right, then it was not about death, but about a second chance.

"The price of the spell, it will be too high. Buffy would not want that." Giles was still not convinced and stated the one thing that he knew would make them stop and think. "Buffy sacrificed her life so that you may live. Do you think she would want your deaths on her head? Would you disrespect her sacrifice that way?"

"Maybe a vote is in order." Wesley tried to add helpfully. He could see Giles' point of view as the price of any resurrection spell was always too high. He just hoped that Willow's brain was not totally occupied with thought of Tara and that she had indeed found a solution.

"Why?" Xander followed the conversation up to that point but could not see the issue. "It's Buffy." That would be explanation enough.

Willow knew that she should explain the rest of the spell and maybe that would clear all their doubts. "Giles, the spell…It's an invocation of Osiris but Tara found a loophole. See, if Spike does the sacrifice to obtain the vino de'madre, then it is his soul that is pledged in lieu of Buffy's." She could see Giles relenting and hope once again touching his battered conscience.

"I don't…I don't know" he sighed. He wanted so much to believe Angel and Willow but magic always had consequences and despite Willow and Tara's inventive interpretation of the spell, he felt that Osiris would not be too please at being short changed.

"It's Buffy." Dawn echoing Xander's words for there was no other reason to consider.

Only when he realized that he was crying and heard Dawn's plea did he nod his head.

"It's settled then. We still need the urn of Osiris. Anya?"

"Right, my turn. Well, after countless of hours surfing the net on my time, I found it on e-bay."

"Good-" Willow wanted to get on with it, but was again interrupted by Anya's huffy tone.

" The problem is, well, the dealer…calls himself Jedi One. Anyway, he wants the 'Christos Pandect of Magic and Demons' for it." She looked expectantly at Tara but when she saw no form of recognition there, she turned to Giles and was glad to see that her words elicited a look of disbelief on his face.

"That's one of our more powerful spell books. In the wrong hands…There are spells there that have been used to destroy legions. It's too dangerous."

Willow knew of the book and had even read some of its chapters before Giles hid it away. "Giles you can't back out now. The spells you're talking about, a lot of them aren't complete and the ones that are…Well, the talismans needed to perform them are also in your possession and I really don't see you having a garage sale anytime soon. Without those, the book is almost useless."

Again Giles nodded despite his apprehension as just the mere thought of getting Buffy back provided such respite that he did not consider the other dangers that could arise from giving the book away.

"Anya can you get the urn by tomorrow."

"Yeah, if Giles let's me have the Pandect today, I can make the deal."

"Good, then tomorrow night is when we bring Buffy back." Willow couldn't describe the atmosphere in the Magic Box as happy but she knew that there wasn't a single person there who was not in agreement with her that it was the only thing they could do.

Interesting how when Wesley asked for confirmation that Willow wanted to bring Buffy back that Tara answered in the plural.

*mollyig* - Hiya! it's great to be online and reply quickly :D . And you notice that about Tara...Yes, it does seem that she is quite taken with Ms Rosenberg and wants to support her (despite her reservations). And I love writing mature Dawn as oppose to 'Get Out, Get Out, Get Out' Dawn.

*funkyasian* - hi steph :) well, this is just the start of the chapter and I hope you've had your morning tea. I can promise that things will be familiar but definitely not the same as before. And I think Tara kinda likes Sunnydale more than LA currently so she is probably going to stay. Of course, there is always Benson (don't you just love that it's actually a real town), Arizona;)

*Grimaldi* - Thank you. Yes, Jedi one is definetely one of the nerds. Andrew thinks its him but I think Jonathan was the one who made the deal so he should get to be Jedi One :grin . And Anya does come up with just the right reasons sometimes. Gotta love it when she's being honest.

I have just finished my second conference call for the night and am absolutely knackered so I am off to bed. Thanks for reading and part 5b is off to beta and 5c is almost done.

Hey Jomarch that was a very interesting update, I liked all the differences between this andwhat happened in season 6. The spells the same but this time everyone knows, the whole honesty thing is good. And it's nice to see Willow and Tara getting closer to each other, the seem to continually touch each other...for reasurance of course ;)

Now it's getting intense. I like that it's all out in the open as opposed to how it oringinally was. Interesting how both Xander and Dawn's arguement is "It's Buffy." And Tara cannot leave. It's not allowed.

Oh this is great. W/T just moved right into each other's arms and no big coming out drama. That's refreshing. Oh but here comes the spell and the beginning of Willow's path towards the dark. And she hasn't told Tara what she did yet. Oh, can't wait for more.

*funkyasian* - Ok, so let me get this straight, you don't want Tara to go to Arizona;) And I so agree that the boards are addictive. Anyway I do hoped you did enjoy your day off anyway.

*Puff* - Well, if you're going to do a comparison between my story and canon, then you may have to look at Season 5 as well because I think that's what Chapter 6 is going to be about;) . And of course the touching is for reasurance only. Although I am so tempted to just throw down and go with a whole chapter with smut :grin .

*MissQuirky* - Glad you're all caught up and more should be on its way. So we do have another vote for Tara staying, ok...I am keeping track.

*Thanatopsis* - If you think this is intense, you should see the rest of the chapters. Well, it shouldn't be too bad (I promise). As for everything being out in the open, it just made more sense to write it that way and still have conflict. If I remember correctly, the "It's Buffy" argument was Willow's in S6 but I always thought that though it was a valid argument it sounded better coming from the less mature Dawn and Xander. I'm just rambling...

*xita* - Yup, writing a big coming out thing was too movie of the week ;) . And I think Tara will light Willow's way in the dark anytime so rest assured that the path won't be too dark :) .

Notes - Finally, Buffy is coming back and everyone's in trouble…or something akin to that.

Title : I Dream of Thee

Chapter 5b

"Ok, are you sure that's what they said? That Buffy is coming back tonight?" Warren couldn't believe the timing. Just when things were beginning to fall into place, the Slayer once again came back to screw things up.

"Yeah, I mean I couldn't hear much on account the Robot was in another room but that's what they were talking about, bringing the Slayer back. I wonder where she went? I mean are Slayers even allowed to take holidays?" Andrew was glad that Warren was actually hanging on to his every word. It showed that Warren viewed his contribution to the gang as more important than whiny Jonathan's. All he did was obtain a stupid Magic Book and one that was relatively useless without the additional talismans.

"She's didn't go on holiday, peanut brain. She was probably hurt or something. But what are we going to do now? I mean they're not going to use the Robot anymore if the Slayer is back. So how are we going to continue with our crime spree? And you know what…speaking of crime spree, I don't think robbing the local arcade of quarters really makes us crime lords." Jonathan didn't mind hanging out with Warren or Andrew that much as they were the only guys who actually included him in their activities. It was just that he really thought Warren was joking about taking over Sunnydale and making Buffy his enemy. Jonathan actually liked Buffy, as she not only saved his life on a number of occasions, she also treated him like a friend. Granted not one she called up but she would always say hi if she saw him and smile. He liked her smile.

"Just leave the planning to me. If the Slayer is coming back tonight, then the Magic Box will be left unguarded. That means we should be able to break in relatively easily and take all the stuff we need for Andrew's Demon summoning and your spells. In the meantime, perhaps you should go find a spell that distracts the Slayer. We don't want her homecoming to go unnoticed." Warren didn't like the fact that the Slayer was coming back so soon. His Bot was the perfect spy and allowed them to keep track of all the different Demons and Vampire groups out there. Because of it, Warren had already made contact with some of them to offer his services, and solicit their special talents.

"Well, there is one of the minor spells in the Pandect. It's used to disorientate one's enemies by making them see the thing that most disturbs them. It's not going to hurt her or anything, just makes her see stuff. I'm going to need something personal of Buffy's though…to bind the spell with."

"Here, Spike didn't take back all the stuff he brought when he first came here." Warren handed Jonathan a pendant. "Now make it happen. We don't have much time and I want the slayer out of commission again as soon as possible."

----------------------------------------------------------------

"What's keeping her?" Spike finished with yet another cigarette and tossed it aside, barely missing Angel's foot.

Spike constant pacing and muttering was beginning to get on Angel's nerves. Even when William the Bloody was first turned, he wasn't this hyper. Angel guessed that the coming trials he needed to undergo in order to participate in the spell was worrying him and he wanted to let off some tension.

"She said she'd be here and she will. You pacing a groove into the floor is not going to make her appear any faster. Besides, shouldn't you be memorizing the spell as well? You only get one chance and I'd rather not see you blow that." Angel was trying to keep his voice level. He really didn't want to antagonize Spike but the fact that the blonde-haired Vampire was imperative in helping bring Buffy back made his own contribution seem unnecessary, and that make him feel useless.

"We're bringing her back, mate. Don't doubt that. And when she's here we'll all feel the better for it."

"You love her." It wasn't a question as much as a statement. Even if Giles did not mention Spike's obsession with Buffy, Angel could see it on him. The clenching of his jaw each time her name was mentioned and the look on his face spoke volumes. Angel recognized that look for he wore the same one. It was a look of love and of loss so deep, he knew that if could breathe; it would hurt to do so.

"So what? I miss her too, every second of every day and I want her so badly sometimes, I think my heart could actually beat again…But it doesn't change a damn thing." Spike had only admitted to Buffy of his love. He knew that she probably informed the Scoobies of his declaration and they had a good laugh at his expense. But that was the way he felt, would always feel. "Does it ever go away?" he asked softly, knowing the answer but still wanting confirmation from his sire.

Angel was surprised at Spike's question not because he asked it but because it meant that Spike didn't expect it to, that his feelings of love for Buffy were so real that like Angel, they hurt. "No it never does, you carry them around with you where ever you go. They color every decision you will ever make and influence all that you do… Those feelings are all that I can carry of her and without them I'd be lost."

"But you have her heart." Spike knew he was pushing the issue. Even from before, Angel never revealed his feelings openly. He would show affection for Darla and Dru but he never told them he loved them, at least not when Spike was around. It did surprise him now that Angel was admitting that Buffy did still influence his life. "Even when soldier boy was in her bed, her heart was still with you."

'And she always had mine. But this is life, Spike and no matter how much we loved each other or wanted to be together we can't. Not now… maybe not ever. Love cannot overcome the impossible. In all my life, I have never found a love that could. Maybe it doesn't exist." Angel was loath to admit that even a love as strong as theirs could not transcend the machinations of Gods and fate. It wasn't fair but that was the way it had played out.

"Maybe…But it would be nice to know that somewhere in this immense universe, there is a couple whose love is so strong it triumphs over everything…Gods, fate and worlds…somewhere."

He sounded like William then, the young would be poet whose life got cut short on a Vampire's whim. Perhaps that was what loving Buffy did, it brought out your humanity. Angel wished that Spike was right and there really was a couple where love prevailed, where it was not the means to an end but the end in itself. It would at least be heartening to know that Buffy and his efforts to save the World were worth it, if such a love existed.

"Hey guys, Sorry I'm late. I just stop to meet up with Tara. You ready to go?" Willow grinned as she held up their entwined hands. She hoped she didn't interrupt anything but it was time and soon, everything would once again be set right.

----------------------------------------------------------

"This is so cool! I mean we look like we should be extras in a 'License To Kill' or something!" Andrew was fiddling with the infrared goggles that Warren just passed him and admiring their stealthy black get-up. Now this was how it was suppose to be, the clothes and the cool gadgets. Now they were ready to take on Sunnydale. He felt like Timothy Dalton in James Bond and wanted to tell Warren that he looked really suave as well, but Warren was busy going over the stupid spell with Jonathan. He really needed the talismans from the Magic Box, that way, he would be all set to summon as many Demons as Warren wanted and then Jonathan wouldn’t be the only one with super skills.

“Yeah, sure, whatever. Are you sure the Bot is all set? It better have unlocked the door for us and have the map of where the old guy hid all the magical items we need?” Warren knew that his plan was going to work. The Slayer’s homecoming was going to be one unforgettable event.

Yes, can we go already?” Andrew was almost out the door before Jonathan’s whiny voice stopped him.

“Not yet, you moron. We need to do the spell first,” turning to Warren he continued, “We can break the spell after we’re done right? I mean, we don’t want to hurt Buffy or anything, right? All we need to stop it is to break the pendant.” Jonathan was still unsure of going through with it. The spell he did, two years ago didn’t end up hurting anyone permanently but Buffy was kind of pissed and he really didn’t want to piss her off any further.

“Of course. Don’t you trust me? We just want her out of the way for a bit.” Warren realized then that he had to watch out for Jonathan. He was the weak link and would eventually rat out on them, but for the time being, he would appease him with whatever it took because his talents were still needed.

“Alright then. I need you to gather around and hold the magic bone.”

“Ewww!” Andrew nearly recoiled in horror. He so did not want to touch the bone but Warren’s angry look changed his mind and he quickly placed his hand over bone.

“Ok, we can begin.” Jonathan slowly poured out the powder and lit the candles surrounding the pentagram. “Hear us Ate, Goddess of Mischief. Hear us, Eris, Goddess of Discord. We beseech you to grant our will. Unleash your mischief and discord upon the slayer. May this pendant be your link to her. May she see her worst fears come to pass.” The blowing out of the candles was the only indication that the Gods had granted his request.

“It’s done.”

----------------------------------------------------------

“Is everyone ready? I need you to light your candles now and form a circle. It’s time.” Willow felt slightly unsettled. She knew that Tara was also feeling her uncertainty and quietly whispered to the blonde. “I…I know this is the right thing to do but it’s just that I need to know that you’re with me. That you believe in me too.”

Tara always felt that despite her frail form, Willow was strong and confident but the words from the redhead made her want to show Willow just how much she loved her. So she leaned in and kissed Willow. It was not a kiss to ignite their passions but one that conveyed her love and trust and just for good measure, she whispered in Willow’s ear as she pulled away. “I do believe in you and trust you. We’ll get through this.”

Feeling more at ease, Willow knelt down next to Spike and indicated for him to begin. If she didn’t know any better, she would have thought that Spike was completely calm but she noticed his hands were shaking as he slowly began to mix the spell ingredients in the urn and pour in the blood. She began to chant.

“Osiris, keeper of the gate, master of all fate, hear us.”

Spike’s cold hand anointed her forehead and cheeks and proceeded to anoint himself as well. He poured the rest of the blood into the ground and continued with the spell.

“Before time and after, before knowing and nothing... Accept our offering. Know our prayer...”

To Giles, everything felt wrong, the invocation and the magics they were dealing with were dangerous and one wrong incantation could destroy them all. However, he could not bring himself to stop the one thing that would bring his Slayer back. So he kept his reservations hidden away and stayed silent as the spell took form.

Tara was paying close attention to Willow and was immediately alarmed when deep cuts appeared on the redhead’s forearms. Willow’s small gasp of pain was enough motivation to cause her to want to jump to her feet, to stop the spell but Angel’s firm grasp on her hand held her back.

“No, she knew this would happen. You have to trust her. We can’t break the circle.” It surprised Angel how strong Tara could really be as she was still trying to wrench herself free. It was only when Willow’s clear voice continued with the spell, did Tara stop struggling.

“Osiris! Here lies the warrior of the people! Let her cross over!”

Willow felt the blood seep out of her arms and the sting of the cuts but she had to do this. She could feel Tara’s presence nearby and could make out her harsh breathing. Tara was afraid and concerned for her and that had calmed her down enough to try and finish the spell so that they could be together again, away from the magic.

Spike was undergoing his own trial and could feel things growing under his skin and crawling upwards, but he had to hold on and help Willow complete the spell. He was strong and he needed to do this for Buffy and his voice joined in with Willow’s.

“Osiris! Let her cross over!”

Tara wanted so much to make it stop. She couldn’t stand to see Willow hurt and needed to do something so she whispered her own mantra as Willow’s pleas drowned out Spike’s own scream. “It’s a test, she’s fine, it’s a test….she’s fine…it’s only a t-test.”

Cordelia had seen a lot of freaky things, both in LA and Sunnydale, but seeing Willow throw up a snake ranked among the most gross and disgusting thing ever. She could hear Tara’s soft voice getting louder as Willow bent forward choking and shaking.

“Willow, no!” Tara needed to stop the spell. The magics Willow was channeling was hurting her and she had to make the other see as well. She turned to Angel, “It’s too powerful. She needs me, please.”

Angel had been warned by Willow to not let anything stop the spell. He knew of the trials and had promised. But Tara’s anguish cry spoke to his heart and he let go off her hand. She immediately went to Willow and joined hands.

Willow could feel her power fading and knew that Spike was barely hanging on as well. Cuts had appeared all over the Vampires body but he was still pleading for Osiris to release Buffy. The snake that had slithered out of her had caused her to lose her concentration. Only when she felt Tara take her hands did she realize that she could draw upon their bond and finish the spell. With renewed power, she shouted above the winds.

“Osiris! Release her!”

The magical blast from the urn, was unexpected and signified the end of the spell. Xander and Anya had been thrown the furthest and looked like they had the wind knocked out of them. Gunn and Cordelia went to help them as Angel and Giles surrounded the inert bodies of Willow, Tara and Spike.

Willow wasn’t knocked out but she still felt the strong and potent after effects of the spell and could barely move. However, the one thing foremost in her mind was the fact that the spell had worked. So when Angel and Giles went to help her, she gripped Angel’s jacket. “You have to dig her out. It worked. Please, she wouldn’t like the dark.”

Tara felt it too. “It’s done.”

Angel didn’t need more of an explanation and immediately crawled to Buffy’s grave and frantically started moving the soft earth with his bare hands. Soon, Giles, Gunn and Wesley joined in, all silent in their task and hoping for a miracle.

Dawn stood between Xander and Anya. She had wanted to go to Tara and hold her hand but she could see that the blonde was worried about Willow and together with Cordelia, they were trying to help her stand. She heard Willow and Tara say that the spell had worked and she could see Spike trying to help out as well, despite his unsteady movements. Gunn and Angel were already hauling the coffin out. She needed to get closer and see and moved forward only to have Anya hold her back.

“Don’t…Let them open it first. We don’t know what…we have to wait.” Anya could see all the hope in both Dawn and Xander’s faces. She was hoping with them but there was still a doubt in her mind. In all her thousand years roaming the earth, she had never seen a resurrection spell go off without a hitch. She wanted this to be the first. Willow and Spike had tried so hard and all of the Scoobies and Angel’s friends fought so many battles to get here that it was about time things went their way.

Xander reached for Dawn’s hand. It was the first time since Buffy’s death that he actually reached out for something besides a beer can and it surprised him. He never thought that he would be able to remember what hope felt like. Even throughout the meeting about bringing Buffy back, he never once felt that they could really do it. He just chimed in because Willow said they could and he always trusted Willow’s brain more than his own. Now things were different again; Buffy could actually be alive in the coffin and they could all go on with their lives as if nothing had happened in the first place. He wanted that so badly. He wanted to get back to being Xander; the Xander that was Buffy’s bud and Anya’s boyfriend and all around nice non-drunk guy.

Cordelia could see that the only support Willow needed was Tara. Despite the fact that she could hardly stand up on her own legs, the moment Tara held her hand, she managed to not only stand but walk slowly towards the grave. Cordelia still wanted to help though, so she continued to hold onto Willow’s other hand and followed them towards the coffin.

Gunn looked over at Wesley to see if he was thinking t he same thing. They had been through a lot in the past year, from getting shot at by Zombie cops to almost getting killed in another Demon Dimension. However, digging up the body of a Slayer after a resurrection spell had to rank amongst the most surreal, tripping thing he had ever done. Wesley’s look back confirmed that the ex-watcher also found this to be incredibly strange.

Spike wanted to be there when they opened the coffin. He needed to see for himself if his sacrifice was worth her life. He had no use for his soul and the tests he had undergone were painful but still manageable. The sacrifice he was thinking of was the miniscule bit of humanity her respect had accorded him. If the spell didn’t work, he knew that that bit of humanity would disappear as she had, and he would find a way to remove the chip and take out his hurt and anger on the world.

Angel was thinking of the first time he ever saw Buffy. It was through a dirty car window and she was walking down the front steps of Hemery High. She looked so young and innocent and he wanted so much to be part of her world and not make her a part of his. However, Whistler had already told him of her destiny and he vowed then that he would help her if he could. He had tried to keep that promise despite the distance that separated them. He was still keeping it now as he slowly raised the lid of the ornate coffin.

‘Alone and in the dark.’ That was the first thought that popped into her head. It was as if there was nothing before, just space and quiet; and suddenly she was sentient. She could feel again, but everything was occluded and hazy. It was as if she was enclosed and pressed down upon. The last thing she remembered from being here was falling; falling and the pain, which only lasted a second, and then she wasn’t in her body anymore but transported somewhere else. She wasn’t who she was anymore but part of a greater whole. She had been at peace. But, here, now, the feeling of being Buffy was back. She was back, she just didn’t know where she was back from or even if she was alive again, until the top opened and she looked into Angel’s Vampiric features.

Warren, the conniving little git, using the bot to find out what the Scoobies are up to. Typical of him. I like how you've shown Jonathon's conflict, he's just weak and lonely, not evil, like the other two cretins.

Grrr, Warren's starting his early tricks much earlier. Nice twist making the bot his spy. The resurrection was definitely intense. Also loved Angel and Spike's conversation, the latter wondering over true and he doesn't know it's right in front of him.

*funkyasian* - Glad you've had your morning coffee and good pick up on Angel's face. We'll see what happens next...I'm ok with the yelling as long as it's directed towards the terrible trio and not me :grin .

Oh cool update, I really liked that the Tara here had to go to Willow during the resurection spell. And the kiss was very sweet.

Can I express my dislike of the nerdy trio? I think you have written them very well I just don't like them :) Now Buffy is back things are moving along nicely.

great update :) i liked the conversation between Spike and Angel. you've written the nerds much better than they were written on the show, Warren seems more sleazier, i like it. glad that they didn't leave Buffy alone in her coffin.

Jomarch -

I'm finally all caught up!! Please forgive me for being remiss with the feedback. Real Life. In the way. But I'm pleased to have had such a big hunk of writing to work through for my return to the board.

I want to especially praise the creativity of your theme. I love how you've taken elements from season six, and turned them on their head. The nerds of doom are well written, and I look forward to seeing how they play out as the 'little bad' as this story progresses. I also am enjoying the guilty pleasures of a cross over between the two shows. I missed that with the UPN/WB breakup, and I'm enjoying how you invision Angel, Cordy and Wes in the early season 6 universe. Well done.

I'm doing to go touch my toes now in your honor.
