DIBS!

:-D

Oh, I was right to a certain extent (yay and giddy), they ended up making love/whoopee... and Tara was all freaked-out-girl...but wow, that ended up a bajillion times different than I thought it would.

In my mind I thought it was a huge train wreck but it was more of a fender bender.

Thank you for that...

Somehow I don't think that this is the end of angst for this story, but it definately felt like a paradigm shift.

Plus -- I tip my hat to your writing of their love making. Sweet, sexy and sensual without the step-by-step diagrams.

I loved this chapter, really really! And yeah, it's got something to do with long awaited willow/tara lovin'... but also because of how far it takes them toward each other emotionally.

:happy If the next update starts out with Tara saying "um, I have to go" and Willow saying "but what about what just happened" and Tara replying "nothing happened" and Willow answering "but we just got married...and each gave birth to magickally conceived twins" and Tara says "whatever, I'm out of here" I am going to be very upset with you, Wattster.

Seriously, I don't think I've ever wanted to throttle Tara in any fic like I want to in this one. And yet you show her fears and vulnerabilities so well that I immediately want to give her a hug. Brava for Willow keeping calm in the face of Tara's panic attack and continuing with the "you aren't getting rid of me again." And hooray for Tara not steamrolling past Willow and running out the door. I'm sure there's more angst ahead, but not necessary angst of their making, if you know what I mean, and it was nice to see them actually having the conversation they should have had all those years ago.

So yay Watty and Lamplight. But boo on the Mayor and whatever shady goings-on are uh...going on that will no doubt prevent Willow and Tara from spending the rest of the story naked and in bed.

Watty,
Wow. What a shattering update. It seemed very much the culmination of the prior two updates. Like this was what we were getting back to with each of those. I very much liked the clear delination between the parts of this udpate and the clarity of Willow's pov. She seemed quite the compassionate, sweet, girlfriend throughout, really not even breaking that when Tara had her little episode.

Speaking of which: Like Cam said, I kind of wanted to throttle Tara here. I mean I get that she's a severly damaged person but she's kind of freaking out too. It makes me question Willow's sanity in pursuing a relationship there. I mean, obviously Willow likes a challenge but I'm still waiting to see some payoff for Willow behind this. So far, it's kind of playing like a doomed and pathetic obsession. I know that's just Tara's damage and needing to let herself fall into it but it's still kind of painful to read/watch.

Tara dug into Willow's back and screamed out as Willow surrounded herself with Tara's softness. Screams of abandon, of joy, of surrender.
I really love this line not because of the screams and digging (which is nice) but because you did a really wonderful and sensual job of maintaining Willow's pov here. You focus on the feeling for Willow even though it's Tara getting most of the feeling.

I have to go because the boy wants to play. Bye and well done.

Love the update Watty. You write them so well, it makes my heart ache sometimes. And when my heart isn't aching, my foot is wanting to give Tara a swift kick in the pants. She needs to wake up and realize Willow wants her, no matter what.

Willow saw Tara glow from within, and smiled.

I loved this line so much. Really captured the inner beauty of Tara that Willow loves so much. It was perfect.

Crisis averted temporarily. But the day had only just begun.

I sense badness is forthcoming. There can't be a line like that at the end of a chapter, and there not be something other than hugs and puppies waiting. I can only hope that Tara doesn't go and do something stupid, like leave again, because I honestly don't know if Willow could forgive her again. Once again, great update. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Oh boy, I thought the major crisis was averted when Tara came to Willow for comfort but you probably thought that was boring :kdevil
"I'm so afraid I'm going to hurt you again," Tara said, her voice hardly audible.

I feel like my heart is breaking with hers. :( So depressing... but we love our angst, dont we? :smash
ETA: Sorry for not replying after every update. I have been reading but somewhere along the line I forgot that I actually leave feedback for this awesome story. Forgive me?

Well I finally got off my duff and caught up on this fic. Double yeah for me.

Really great to read a piece here that deals with adults. Negotiating old hurts and choices that will never go away is a dose of reality I'd like to see more of.

Cheers.

Oh it was great ^^

I didn't see the end coming, I mean the Tara-trying-to-escape-discretly part. I hope she will not have too much of that kind of moments, because it woul dtae a lot of will for Willow to forgive and accept that I think.

Anyway, really nice update :)

Thank you

I stumbled upon this fic by accident .. but it was a lucky accident as this fic is very well written with a compelling story line.

db -- yay to dibs and for being right and of course giddy (:lol I typed diggy). They were always headed for the physical part of their relationship but this wasn't yet the right time. It could have been a huge train wreck but for Willow being sensible girl. No this isn't the end of the angst for this story although the angst shifts direction a bit. Thanks!

Dianneswillowtree -- whoohoo, we are definitely on the roller-coaster ride. Scream at your convenience. :lol

Cam -- I wish I could have ended Tara saying "nothing happened" because that would have been a huge emotional cliffhanger. But I didn't want to drag it out for too long, I've been twisting the readers' emotional nuts since the beginning, I have to set a limit somehow. I get what you mean about wanting to throttle and hug Tara at the same time, clearly she has issues which she needs to sort out herself but at the same time she needs Willow to help her. Despite Tara shutting her out, Willow did behave incredibly maturely and this is what saved the situation. You're very right, angst ahead may not be of their making, it's more external rather than internal angst. A little while to go until they end up blissfully naked in bed. :)

Debra -- yes the past couple of chapters have set this one up. The chapter title could have been "Willow saves the day" the way she refused to let Tara spiral into self-denial. Tara is damaged, and part of that is of her own making in that she continued to allow herself to be damaged. What's the payoff for Willow? Good question, and many people would have given up by now. Not a lot right now apart from that she can't imagine life without Tara. Thanks for the comment re: Willow's pov. I have to confess that I wrote the lovemaking part last year for my nano story which is in first person, so when I adapted this it translated better. Thanks again.

Sara -- awww to heart aching, but thank you. Your reaction to what Tara said/did is understandable, if it weren't for Willow's persistence they won't be having a relationship at all. What draws Willow to her, despite all this? You're right, the inner beauty that even Tara herself can't see. Yes badness is coming, but it will be more external than internal. They have issues still, but a lot has been resolved ... at least they're sort of on the same page now.

WillowRulez -- hi there and no worries. We do love our angst, and I keep saying ... it's not the end. :)

Boschi -- :lol@ off your duff. One of the great features of this board is the variety of fics available, and when we write about adult themes it's as well appreciated as the fluffier stories. Thanks!

Julia -- Tara still has issues but Willow is slowly breaking down those barriers. Thanks!

Vale -- oh good, you're not glaring at me anymore. :)

Emms -- thanks!

LittleBit -- I like this type of accidental stumbling upon, glad you like it.

Title: Lamplight
Author: watty (hiddenwatson[at]gmail[dot]com)
Distribution: Chris and Susan have pre-approval. Anyone else please ask for my permission first.
Rating: R to NC-17
Disclaimer: BtVS characters, concepts and dialogue belong to Mutant Enemy, Fox, The WB, UPN and others.
Summary: Contemporary AU. Where demons wear human faces. Two lives drifted apart, can they find their missing half?
Notes: This will be long and angsty. It also changes direction more than once. I had planned for it to go in a certain direction, I didn't know it would go that far. Sometimes, stories have a mind of their own.

Part 19

The morgue was cold. Tara expected that. But not how cold the entire facility was. Banks of oversized metal lockers lined against three walls, and she tried hard not to stare at the ones with tell-tale labels in the little slot above the handle.

Detective Lockley was there to greet her, as were two people in lab coats whose names she forgot as soon as they were introduced. From the coroner's office, and looking nothing like Tru Davies, or Quincy for that matter. She mentally berated herself, it was no time for trivial jokes. The serious, business-like technicians led the small party toward a body locker at the end of the left hand wall. It would be all the way to the end. The label above this locker door didn't have a name, rather it was a series of alphanumeric characters. Even in death, we have our own identification numbers.

"Are you okay?" Detective Lockley asked gently.

Tara wanted to scream "No!" She didn't ask for this, and she knew what she was about to see would stay with her the rest of her life. But she thought about the teenager who had no family to settle her affairs, and whose body had to be identified by a co-worker she had only a passing friendship with. She didn't want the young life to end in such an undignified way. She closed her eyes and covered her face with both hands, taking the deep breaths that did nothing to steady her nerves.

She should have agreed to Willow's offer to accompany her, but she didn't want to drag her new ... lover, they were lovers now, and the thought settled her a little ... into her mad morbid circus.

"It'll only take a minute," one of the technicians said. "She doesn't look too bad, considering."

Tara heard, didn't need to see, Detective Lockley shoot him a stern look, hushing him.

She opened her eyes finally, though her hands balled into fists at her side. "I'm ready."

Tara expected a loud clang, but the locker door opened with a soft whoosh. The body tray slid out smoothly and the technician unzipped the black body bag in one quick motion.

Nothing, no matter how much you prepare for it, can erase the stark chill that overwhelms you at the sight of a face in deathly repose. She didn't want to look, yet couldn't tear her eyes away. She thought Katrina would look peaceful, but she looked like she was in agony.

Detective Lockley touched her reassuringly on the elbow, and that brought her back to her senses. "Yes, that's her," she confirmed, for the record.

"Thank you, Tara. I know how hard it is. I've done this many times and it doesn't get easier," the detective said. "I'd like to speak with the techs here for a moment, are you okay about waiting for me outside?"

Tara looked down the length of the room, and the claustrophobic compression of the lockers between her and the door. "I'll wait for you to finish, if that's alright?"

Detective Lockley nodded. It wasn't unusual for family and friends to need support to exit the facility. "I'll be quick." Turning to the technician, "She has bruises on her neck and face," her clipped tone indicating she expected an explanation.

"Yeah, the bruises are all over her arms too and there are punctures on her back. I told the M.E. about them," the technician confirmed. "Will you be at the autopsy?"

Kate Lockley sighed. "I have to be."

*****

Since the coroner's office was near the station house, she met with the two detectives at the precinct. Taking her statement took longer than Tara expected, the detectives were thorough and probing, asking the right questions but letting her come to the conclusion herself. They were also open with her, informing her that Katrina was seen talking to Spike, the owner of the GlamKat a few hours before her death. Whether this had any bearing on the case they could not say.

"What is this Suite that Mr Wilkins seems to occupy, that is so important to everyone we speak to?" Detective Gunn asked.

"He owns the whole building. The Suite is the penthouse where he has his private offices and accommodation," Tara answered.

"But 'going to the Suite' seems to have some significance beyond going to a meeting with the boss," he continued.

Tara suspected she knew why they were asking, and she had to tell the truth. But she still hesitated. "Is this relevant?"

"According to Katrina's roomie's statement, she was nervous about going to the Suite that day. From what we gathered, it wasn't her first time, so why the nervousness?"

"What are you implying?" Tara asked.

Detective Lockley returned with three cups of coffee. "We want to know a little more about the club, how it works, you know. This is an investigation into a suspicious death, not a crackdown. We may be vice, Tara, but we know the difference," she interjected.

"I think for the purposes of your investigation, whatever goes on in the Suite is by mutual consent. I honestly can't say what happened to Katrina, because I wasn't there, but she never mentioned anything, and there were never signs of abuse," she said. It was common knowledge that Mr Wilkins lavished attention on certain young and ah, vivacious employees. Sometimes it involved sex, and of course was narcissistic and smacked of favoritism. But to his credit there were no repercussions for those who didn't want to go so far.

They didn't ask was whether she herself had been summoned to the Suite. It was something she never wanted to reveal and lord, she hoped the topic was never raised with Willow.

The detectives turned to other lines of questioning. "So I understand you used to work as a hostess and dancer but you're more of an administrator now?"

"I'm sort of semi-retired from performing. I'm taking a part-time degree in law and have been lucky enough to be involved in the business aspect of the organization. Am I part of your investigation?"

"No, no," the detective reassured. "We just want to build a better picture of everyone we talk to."

*****

The flurry of activity lasted for a week, then everyone tried go about their business as normally as they could under the circumstances. The coroner's report was gruesome reading. It was not suicide: traces of blood and "other bodily fluids" were found. Katrina died of a drugs overdose but was not self-inflicted. The investigation was turned over to Homicide.

The first that Tara heard about it was when a new detective swaggered into the club and demanded access to information already passed to Detectives Lockley and Gunn. Unlike the vice squad duo, this new detective was pushy and unfriendly, treating his interviewees with thinly disguised contempt.

"I know you gave a statement to the goonies, I want you to tell me again," he hissed at a distraught April, while Lily was trying to reason with him.

"May I help you?" Tara was glad she was walking by and heard the commotion.

Lily glared at the thin, sour man. "He's harassing her."

"You're obstructing police inquiries, you bitch," he scowled.

Tara knew it was time to bring out the diplomatic guns. "I'm sure it's a misunderstanding, Mr —?"

"Rayne. Detective Rayne, Homicide," he muttered curtly.

Her interview with Detective Rayne was disagreeable. He was brusque and cagey, seeming to want to make her feel dirty. He was more focused on trying to discredit Katrina than trying to find her killer. She recounted everything she knew and was relieved when she closed the door after him.

*****

The only bright spot in her otherwise gloomy world was Willow. Her heart sang whenever they talked on the phone, and soared when they saw each other. Willow was busy at work, the end of the year meant it was time to tally accounts and close deals so the revenues were recorded in the year's books. They found time whenever they could, and if they couldn't spend the night together Willow's voice was still the last she heard before falling asleep.

Tara thought she had never been in love. Truth was, she had never not been in love with Willow. It was so natural to gravitate toward her lover whenever they were in the same room, and she felt Willow's eyes follow her always. Willow still came to the club. Tara would sit with her, their fingers playing with each other softly, sometimes not needing to talk. Willow drank less now, which Tara was thankful for.

"What do you do over the holidays?" Willow asked one night, after they had made gentle love and were relaxing in Tara's deep bathtub. Aunt Marie's home had only a tiny, grimy shower stall and she made sure that her own bathrooms were full of bath oils and luxury.

"It's one of our busiest seasons. Lots of office parties and celebration. But that's for floor staff, for office staff it's usually fairly quiet. Why?"

Willow made a small hill out of the pile of bubbles floating on the surface of the water. "Remember I wanted to go skiing?"

"After Christmas? Most people will be recovering from the bingeing and we may have the slopes to ourselves."

"You read my mind. How do you do that?"

Tara splashed a few bubbles on Willow's head. "Magic. I can see the thought bubbles over your head."

Willow leaned forward and found Tara's lips. The kiss which started easy and relaxing turned more urgent and soon after they found themselves stumbling into the bedroom. They didn't get too much sleep that night although their bodies and spirits were energized by the euphoria of coming together.

Just as well, considering the news that greeted them the next morning.

Well ugg and double ugg to both the morgue and Rayne. The morgue sounds just totally creepy, especially if I think of the one in The Body. Dead bodies and undead bodies (not really relevant here but still). I think that Tara is a very brave and confident person and that's totally shocking given her beginnings. Rayne is an obvious creep. I really like Law & Order type shows although I don't watch them much because my wife doesn't and I have to say that on those shows, the detectives are pretty people-person types. I mean they seem almost more psychologist than cop, you know? The ones at NYPD Blue seem to be like savants the way they get information. He doesn't fit that bill.

The comfort with which the girls have become lovers is wonderful and also a little unsettling. Unsettling why? Because I know there are 30 or so more updates and this is going to be angsty. So angsty what? What will go wrong now? It could be all "The End" next week but it won't be which means things will get worse. Yes, to skiing and most importantly to snuggling and staying warm.

This was lovely to read. Thanks.

Oh Watty... you are an evil mistress of angst (:-D)

Wow -- as someone who occasionaly has to go into a morgue (to drop off, not id), I have to say that you really did an excellent job of capturing the ...coldness of the place. Not just devoid of human warmth but also there's this sterile lonely emotional void that exists there. Well done.

And, ok... questions about 'the suite'. Ugh. Of course Tara doesn't want Willow to know - so it's bound to come up again in some horriby angst filled and humilating way for Tara. Ugh. I wish that Tara's life hadn't been so filled with dissapointments and voids and advantage-takers. I suspect that Willow will be appropriately appalled (at the situation (whatever it was), and not so much with Tara. Please?

My magic 8 ball of speculation predicts badness with the mayor and spike or maybe spike -- but mostly the mayor. He's all up into Willow's work with his dubious dealings and has more than a little something to dangle over Tara's head... and I think Ethan works for him not for the fbi (just a guess - he's a jerk). Something smells stinky and it's not me (I swear, I just bathed).

Thank you for the lovely Willow Tara gentle loving thoughts. I am so glad to hear Tara's thoughts about falling in love again with Willow. I am *so* glad that she is finally able to admit it to herself... and I hope that they can be supportive to each other through what is undoubtably going to be a bad time.

...and then you leave a mean old cliff hanger harbinger of bad tidings.

Fooey. Evil mistress of angst. Fooey. Fooey. Fooey.

I'm very happy that Tara has let Willow in or it at least seems so now.
She didn't ask for this, and she knew what she was about to see would stay with her the rest of her life.

I'm glad I never had to see a body (yet) in my life... must be the stuff nightmares are made of.
Sometimes it involved sex, and of course was narcissistic and smacked of favoritism. But to his credit there were no repercussions for those who didn't want to go so far.

Well... I cant imagine that he never summoned Tara to the suite... so I wonder, did she say no?

Julia -- thanks as always! Life is funny this way, when something starts going well, other things start going bad. But it's all there to challenge us, and Tara I think is doing a very good job rising to the challenge.

Debra -- definitely ugg to the horrors of murder. Both the morgue and Ethan were supposed to be creepy, and I wanted that to contrast with the second half of the chapter. Luckily he makes only brief appearances here, whenever we need some creep and nastiness.
The comfort with which the girls have become lovers is wonderful and also a little unsettling. Unsettling why? Because I know there are 30 or so more updates and this is going to be angsty.

Am I the victim of my "success"? Well, 4/5 comments per chapter is humiliating actually, hardly a success. But I've prepped everyone about how angsty this is, so you don't trust me, do you? Woot! My work here is done! >:)

db -- I've actually been in a morgue. Not to identify anyone, but to watch a dear friend being transported down from the ICU to the storage and that sounded so matter-of-fact it borders on cold-blooded and morbid. I'm glad I painted a realistic picture of how desolate the place is, it's important to get medical details right considering I have readers like you and K who are in the field.

Yep, the combination of the morgue, the mentions of the Suite, Ethan Rayne were supposed to pile on the discomfort. Definitely at least two out of that three will return at a later stage to give further discomfort. Your magic 8-ball has a tendency to be right, but I won't confirm nor deny anything. :P

I wanted there to be contrast between the discomfort of the first half of the chapter, and the niceness of the second half. Things are looking better for them, and they have overcome possibly the highest hurdle so far in their relationship.
I hope that they can be supportive to each other through what is undoubtably going to be a bad time.

I think there's almost a pavlovian response to anything I write nowadays, that I can't be trusted *not* to create angst and badness. I'm so bad. But guess what? I like. :lol@fooey.

WillowRulez -- thanks! Their relationship is much better, and they will need each other in the days and weeks to follow. It won't be all bad, despite what I said to Debra and db.
I cant imagine that he never summoned Tara to the suite... so I wonder, did she say no?

um, let's see eh? :P

Chummy -- I do want their relationship to develop, and act as an oasis of goodness among the bad that will surely come. Thanks! :)

Part 20

The Soho club scene was in shock today after the body of club owner Spike B was found on the sidewalk outside his club last night. It appears that Mr B, who owns the glamour club GlamKat, had fallen from the roof of the building housing his club. The cause of death has not been released. This follows the death eight days ago of Katrina Silber in what police are treating as a drugs-related murder. Ms Silber was a dancer at Fur, a few doors down from Mr B's club. A police spokesman refused to speculate as to whether the two deaths are related. Christmas is a busy time for the entertainment industry and business in New York's nightclubs could suffer as a result of these deaths. Our media correspondent reports from the Meatpacking District in Manhattan... "

"Makes you wonder if elementary school teaching was a better career." Faith threw herself on the armchair in the rec room where the six o'clock news was the primary attraction.

"Not when metal detectors at school entrances routinely find knives and guns in kids' pockets," Tara remarked.

"I suppose the police will be paying us a visit again," Kendra added.

"Well, if they look anything like that Detective Lockley, they can come around anytime." This was from Forrest, one of the bouncers.

"Thought Detective Gunn is more your vice," Faith smirked, laughing at her own pun.

The bouncer marched over to where Faith was sitting and stood up to his full height. "Shut the hell up, Faith."

Faith continued to sprawl over the chair, clearly in a belligerent mood. "Touched a nerve, big boy?"

"Shh, they're talking about K-Fed," someone hushed the bickering duo, who continued to shoot daggers at each other.

Sure enough, the police in the form of Detective Ethan Rayne showed up the next day. He nodded an acknowledgment to Faith, who took him to Mr Wilkins' office. They were holed up for about an hour behind closed doors. His interview with April ended with her staggering from the room in tears. Tara was waiting outside and was the first to the shaking girl. Despite her pleading, April refused to say what had upset her so, and Tara was already troubled when she went into Detective Rayne's temporary office.

The detective had his feet up on the desk and was wiping a smug expression off his face. He looks way too comfortable over there. "Ms Maclay, take a seat."

"I thought detectives work in pairs," she said outright. He felt too much like a rogue, and she was uncomfortable that no one else seemed to be partnering his handling of the case.

"Oh, Ripper is momentarily indisposed, but the case waits for no one, you know," he shrugged.

She knew she needed to be bold. "Which case are you working on today, Detective?"

"Both of them actually. I thought you may be happy that we found Katrina's killer," he declared, obviously eagerly waiting for her reaction.

"I'm glad. Is that why you're here, to get statements for the arraignment?"

"Ah, I forget you're a part-time law student. Planning to specialize in criminal law? You'll have plenty of ready clients among your," he sneered and spat the last word, "friends."

She refused to let his taunts get to her. "I haven't decided yet."

"Well, your services won't be required this time. It's very simple — Spike killed Katrina in a lover's tryst after they both got high on a cocktail of Special K, Midnight Blue and whatever the hell they stick in their holes. Eventually he couldn't live with the guilt, so he offed himself. We found a note that told us everything."

She couldn't help gaping at him with wide eyes; it took her a second to snap out of her shock. "From what I hear, Spike's as gay as sunshine, they can't be lovers," she muttered incomprehensibly.

He swung his legs down, placed his hands in a gratuitous steeple and peered at her with a superior expression. "We both know that appearances aren't everything, especially when it comes to sexual preferences, don't we?"

She gripped the armrests of her chair, he was clearly trying to get a rise from her. "I appreciate you coming to tell us in person."

"I just came to tie up loose ends and to inform your boss. He's a person of importance and deserves to be kept abreast of the situation," he said. Then he relaxed somewhat and said, perhaps too nonchalantly, "I'm surprised no one mentioned about Spike and Katrina hooking up. You never said anything, for instance."

"I had no idea, that's why."

"That's hard to believe." His gaze bore into her, but she didn't waver. "Ah well, we won't worry about that now, will we?"

"So, case solved overnight? You must be one hell of a detective," she said evenly. Something didn't sit right. Spike's death was too convenient; there were still unanswered questions; and why was April so scared?

He stood up and leaned over the desk so his face was inches from hers. "Yes. The case is closed. And take my advice, don't mess with things that are over your head," he said ominously.

"Is that a threat, Detective?"

"Lady, you don't know what a threat is."

*****

Tara shook off the unpleasantness of the encounter with the obnoxious detective and concentrated on enjoying her few days' break. She spent a quiet and achingly blissful Christmas with Willow. She was working on Christmas Eve but the sight of Willow braving the snow to meet her when she left work at 2am was enough to melt the coldest, unfeeling heart.

"You're one lucky bastard," Kendra gave her a quick hug before hurrying off to her own holiday festivities.

Tara's eyes were already on Willow's as her lover looked left and right before crossing the street. Willow had a thick white scarf wrapped around her face and a ridiculous bobble hat on her head. Tara smiled at how Willow, in her own words, still occasionally spazzed out when it came to fashion. She looked so cute, and Tara smiled again at how badly smitten she was.

"Was that Kendra who had her arms around you? I hope she didn't cop a grope?" Willow winked.

"She wishes." Tara took Willow's face in both her hands and kissed her soundly. "Hmm, you taste good. Been munching on chocolate while you wait?"

Willow giggled. "You keeping track of me now?"

"Doing my wifely duties."

"Wifely? Jeez woman, I haven't even proposed yet!"

Tara smiled even more. They were teasing, but underneath the banter there was a seriousness about this banter. It was too early to touch on matters as heavy as long term commitment, and they skirted the topic by unspoken consent. It would have to be addressed eventually. But for now Tara snaked her arm around Willow's waist, simply to feel their closeness. "Well, while you think about how big a diamond you're gonna get me, I'll get us a taxi home."

"Smooth talker," Willow grinned.

Getting home late didn't mean skimping on properly greeting each other and celebrating the start of the holiday season. They spent a few hours enjoying each other's taste and touch before falling into deep, satisfied slumber.

They slept very late on Christmas Day. Since there were only two of them they decided on simple food that they enjoyed rather than following any tradition. Willow showed off her cookery skills by making a hearty chicken and sausage bake which she served with potatoes roasted in goose fat and, their concession to Christmas, brussels sprouts.

Tara made a Yule log and a double portion of chocolate icing. When Willow asked her about the extra icing, she answered by solemnly stripping off her clothes and spreading the sweet, gooey mess on her breasts and stomach. Willow wasted no time in accepting the invitation to create bark-like patterns using a plastic fork, and was equally enthusiastic in slowly licking off the chocolate. By the time she finished, Tara was about to explode and she was begging Willow to taste her in other sweeter, hotter, needier places. Later, they crowned Willow champion icing lover but not before Tara had her turn in testing out her own icing tasting skills.

*****

"What a pleasure December should be for you. Jupiter, the giver of gifts and luck, will act like a kindly uncle who will arrive with his big coat stuffed with goodies in all his pockets: chocolates, assorted pretty little boxes tied with bows, and lots of money — all earmarked for you! Romantically, the lineup of stars in your eighth house will make you unusually affectionate. You won't hold your feelings in, nor should you. If you and a loved one have been planning a trip, perhaps a romantic getaway, this is the week for it."

"What does that tell us?" Tara risked a glimpse at Willow while she was driving up the motorway at a speed that was over the speed limit yet not so much over to attract the attention of the police or speed cameras. Willow was reading from a magazine and looked fabulous in a thick sweater and sunglasses.

It was the day after Christmas and they loaded up their rented SUV bright and early to get ready for the drive to Vermont. They allowed the whole day for the 300 mile drive to Sugarbush Valley, determined to enjoy the journey. Tara had almost wanted to throw Willow's immaculately planned itinerary out of the window but wisely decided to adopt a wait-and-see attitude. After all, this was their first trip together, as friends and a couple. There were bound to be minor differences in habits, and their thinking may take some time to become synchronized. Some couples never achieved this level of attunement, but Tara had a good feeling about their connection.

"That we're compatible travelers — and we made the right decision to go on this trip." Willow moved the hand that was on Tara's thigh an inch higher, to Tara's pleasure and ... discomfort. Tara squirmed in the tight confines of the driver's seat, randomly glad that she was wearing loose fitting cargo pants rather than jeans. Jeans had hard seams in sensitive places.

She was torn between giving in to the fabulous sensation that was rapidly spreading all over her, and the need to be a safe driver. She settled on placing her hand over Willow's and keeping it from moving further up. Her lover smiled mischievously.

"And does your horoscope tell you that we will have a good trip?" she asked conversationally.

Willow pretended to read more. "Hmmm, let's see. It tells me that if I'm traveling with the right person, the trip will always be memorable and exciting."

Tara laughed. "Is that really what it says?"

"Ack, a horoscope should always say what I want it to say." Willow flipped the magazine over the back of her seat and returned to the matter of keeping Tara just a tad teased while she drove.

They made good time and was unpacking in their cozy room at the country inn by late afternoon.

Skiing on fresh untouched powder could be described as one of life's most indulgent pleasures. The cleansing mountain air seemed to permeate into Tara's lungs, chasing away the pressures of everyday life with each breath. The resort wasn't as empty as they anticipated but there weren't any lines at the ski-lifts and they were able to make several leisurely runs on both the powder and groomed slopes. They retired early after dinner in their hotel to rest out-of-shape ski muscles and to exercise other, more intimate, ones.

The next day they deliberated between taking a horse-drawn sleigh ride or a more adventurous snowshoe hiking tour. Tara was afraid that Willow's horse fear may skew their decision but the sheer romance of the sleigh ride was too irresistible. Covered in thick travel blankets, tasting the wind in their hair and listening to the jingle of the horses' bells, she felt like she was transported back in history to the early pioneer days.

It was so easy to be in love. In the idyllic, snow-covered, postcard-perfect New England countryside, it was like they were on their honeymoon.

Yay! Dibs!

ETA: I really enjoyed this chapter. Beyond the badness that is Ethan Rayne and his obvious "I'm awesome, worship me" personality, it just had a good, happy, well-adjusting feel to it. Willow and Tara are getting along, they're happy, in love, and going on a Vermont skiing trip. Every relationship's fantasy.

I know there's some evil plot afoot, what with the all too simple solving of the Spike/Katrina case, and I know Ethan Rayne will be back to piss me off some more, but for right now I'll just be happy and content in my own little Willow and Tara bubble. As always, great writing, very intriguing, and can't wait for more. Also, sorry about the feedback I've not been leaving. All I can say is school is evil. Once again, awesome.

*sigh* Your idyllic scenario was so lovely, Watty...and all I could think about the whole time was how smirky Ethan and conniving Wilkins and who knows who else are all plotting their evil deeds. I hate waiting for the other shoe to drop, but I just know it's there.

On the other hand, Tara being all cool and lawyer-y in the face of Ethan's taunting was kickass. Can there be a smackdown? Please? Just a little one...maybe with Kate around to tell Ethan he had it coming and keep Tara from going to jail? No? Damn.

Watty - Oh. There is definite badness going on. One junky dancer is just one junky dancer but Spike? That's beginning a conspiracy. How does Ethan retain his job, being such a complete asshole? Don't detectives need to be able to engage the interviewie and get their trust? Don't they need to be able to relate to people? He certainly doesn't. I'm glad that Tara stood up to him but I'm not sure he's the type that that attitude has any effect upon.

And second part: of course lovely. They are so in love and I'm really happy to see it. Of course, there's still the loomin angst but chocolate and skiing and clean snow sounds just so wonderful.

I can't wait to find out what more badness is coming...

“We found a note that told us everything."

Just how bad is he at his job? I have the feeling he is corrupt.
"Doing my wifely duties."
"Wifely? Jeez woman, I haven't even proposed yet!"

Maybe Tara will do that for her ;)

Ode to brief feedback ('cause I am away from home and my thumbs get tired easily)...

Oh there is something amiss here, missy... Spike bit it too? Now I *know* the Mayor's involved... he probably caught wind of whats-her-name's "betrayal" and made them *both* pay.

The thing that gets me is that you have Willow and Tara all getting close and honeymoony -- which just bodes badness for them!!

My magic 8-ball o' speculation is whirling. It thinks that stinky stuff is going to emerge re: the mayor and it is going to adversely impact our two heroines... probably casting Tara in a bad light and challenging Willow's devotion/ making Tara be afraid *or* worse -- he (the mayor) is going to try and pin something bad on Tara or Willow or both and then, more baddness. Willow's little deal with him has slipped into the background and it makes me nervous! Tara's past with him is all shadey and veiled and stuff. I have decided that Wilkins is a slippery weasle and must be eliminated. Plus Ethan is a sneaky mean-o slime bag who I think is working for Wilkins.

Meh.

Can't Willow and Tara stay on the snowy slopes being honeymoony together forever???

You have bad things in store for them... I just know it!!

Oh my. That Ethan is definitely an asshole. I'm sure we're gonna find out he has all kinds of dirt hidden under his rug in the future. And I can't help to be a bit nervous 'cause Tara more than likely may be affected by it, one way or another.
And then this update is all kinds of sweet and sugary - at least when it comes to Willow and Tara. Their interactions are utterly awww-worthy and loving and tender...
Db said honeymooney. I can't help thinking that this 'peace' is merely the center of the hurricane. And, if I know you a bit, you're gonna drown us in angst again pretty soon.
Does it sound like I'm complaining? Not a chance. As usual, the masochist in me is thoroughly loving/enjoying it...and I'll be here waiting for whatever journey you decide to take us on.
Keep up the good work, buddy.

It's funny, when Katrina first showed up dead, I wasn't sure if it would lead to anything. I don't mean that it seemed random or disconnected, just that this is a very real-life kind of story - sometimes, tragedies just happen. But it seems there is more going on, and it's probably going to bite Tara - and Willow, by association - on the ass, bringing an abrupt halt to their present bliss.

I thought it was telling though that when Tara went to Willow, it was because she needed someone who loved her. Whatever else her relationship with Willow was, whatever doubts or issues they had, she was sure that Willow loved her. There's hope there :wtkiss

I'm curious to see how Willow's dragged into the muck-up that's looming - whether it'll be purely as Tara's lover, trying to support her through a tough time (which could be a job in itself - Tara's initial reaction, after she and Willow slept together, showed she's far from over her insecurity), or whether Willow is going to be affected directly. There was that scene earlier, where the Mayor (I just can't think of him as anything but) met her... I wonder if something's up business-wise, that may make/reveal Willow's 'world' as grim and cutthroat as Tara's can be.

Sara -- :bigwave I love your description of Ethan's personality, he does think he's the works doesn't he? I seem to be writing chapters of contrasts -- there's much badness in their lives but their life together is getting better. Thanks for your fb, hope school is going well.

Cam -- right, end it there with the lesbiany B&B goodness and no resolution to the heinous plot afoot. Who do you take me for? A fluff writer? (Twist that a bit and it becomes snuff writer, which scares me.) I can forgive you, because the ski location was very idyllic, and nice. But gulp yes, badness still to come.

Debra -- Conspiracy, oh yes. Something that requires our heroines to be brave and solve.
How does Ethan retain his job, being such a complete asshole?

:lol I can think of more than a couple of asshole TV detectives whose methods push the boundaries. From Mick Belker in Hill Street Blues to Vic Mackey in The Shield we gravitate toward these bad boys. Tara wasn't afraid of him though. First they were at her home turf and second she's done nothing wrong.

Glad you liked the second part. Like I said to Sara I think I'm writing contrast-y two part chapters. More goodness to come, and some badness too.

WillowRulez -- oh yes Ethan is as corrupt as they come, but I may not delve too deeply into that. I think more focus on W/T no?

db -- you were away from home and your thumbs got tired? Good god woman what have you been doing *wiggles eyebrows*? I was talking to K about your feedback-y goodness and one thing I've noticed about your fb is that you have this uncanny ability to guess right. Your magic 8-ball hasn't been too far from the truth. Stinky Mayor stuff is coming up and it will affect Tara and by association Willow. Tara's past will also come back to haunt them a bit, but let's see eh?

Can't Willow and Tara stay on the snowy slopes being honeymoony together forever???

Le Sigh. It's like all good vacation times, there's this stupid bothersome thingy called Life and Needing to Work to Make a Living. There will be more goodness, and badness of course.

K -- I'll have to look at future chapters, can't remember Ethan's role exactly, but there's badness all around yep. You're right, the sweet stuff is a kind of the calm in a sea of upcoming chaos. The good is they now have each other, the bad is the bad will only get badder. Thanks dear and hi to P.

Chris -- I really like how you've summed it up:
this is a very real-life kind of story - sometimes, tragedies just happen.

Absolutely! Someone in an earlier chapter said this was an adult story, and basically it is; it's about life, missed opportunities, struggling to find love and all the things that happen to people in real life. Well, it's set in a club and a cut-throat investment bank, but it's not too far fetched, we could be reading about these events in the newspaper.

What we won't read is of course how lovely their relationship is coming along. I won't put too many obstacles ... okay not too many. There will be sweet lovin' but there'll be mayorly (yeah, I can't think of him as anything but either) badness. Thanks, Chris.

Part 21

The first day in the New Year the Top 5 Producers board on the trading floor was wiped clean, ready for another year's of intense competition. Willow got back to business straightaway, accounts whose activities had slowed down at year end were gearing up again. January was also an important month for bankers as it was when they received their bonuses. The media had whipped themselves into a feeding frenzy with headlines like how many $100m bonuses would be paid; how BMW opened a showroom on Wall Street so the rich bankers would only need to walk a few steps to spend their hard earned cash; and how Manhattan real estate prices rose 3.2% in one quarter when the rest of the state dropped by the same percentage.

Willow's contribution to the economy was modest in contrast. She had wanted to splurge out on Tara, but her lover refused. Tara pointed out that she'd had enough of business dining at upscale restaurants and $3,000 bottles of Pétrus was not her style. If they were to celebrate, she wanted someplace cozy where they could be themselves.

"I have a better idea," Willow said.

"What?"

"Spa weekend."

"As long as it isn't one of those boot camp places where they serve you one slice of pineapple for breakfast and expect you to drink ten liters of water the rest of the day."

"No, the only whipping in these parts are done by me."

There were benefits to having the right connections. Tara made one phone call and in the morning they were on their way to the Hamptons, an overnight stay at a spa resort arranged. Over the next two days they were oiled, kneaded, stroked and pampered. In the evening they would retire to their room, with its own spa facilities, and repeat the experience — with each other.

Invigorated, Willow returned to the office early on Monday to catch up with Simon on the Tokyo desk. The floor was empty at 6am, most of her co-workers didn't start filtering in till 7am. She was concentrating on work, but gradually the sounds of sharp voices could be heard from one of the private offices. At first she let the words drift over her, but they grew louder she couldn't ignore them.

"I think we're finished here," Patrick's angry voice suddenly pierced through the quietness when he opened his door.

"Oh, I'll be back," his visitor replied coldly. At the corner of her eye Willow made out the form of the divisional chairman, someone who she thought played a figurehead role rather than get involved in day to day operations.

After the silver-haired man left, Patrick savagely slammed one hand against the wall, and Willow thought she heard bones break. Only when he turned around did he see her, his flushed face easily betraying the level of his frustration. Willow merely raised one eyebrow in a silent question of concern. He acknowledged that with a small nod of the head and mouthed one word, "Politics."

They had worked together long enough to understand each other. Willow knew he would tell her if and when the time was right, just as he knew that she would not mention the incident to anyone that could compromise him in a professional capacity. She was the least manipulative trader he had ever encountered and would not think of utilizing potential embarrassing indiscretions for her own personal gain.

He returned to his office, not to emerge for a whole day; she returned to making markets.

Trouble was, trouble, like buses, never came in single doses.

A letter concerning Richard Wilkins' account arrived on Willow's desk. After careful perusal of the legalistic and jargon-filled document, she concluded that it related not to his personal account with her, but was meant for his holding company. Another bank's jurisdiction. By that time, she couldn't forget that it confirmed the sale of the GlamKat by Spike B for the princely sum of $1, which was transacted before his demise and was done through the parties' respective companies. It was not unusual for sales to be transacted for nominal amounts, but Willow couldn't quite see the logic or reason behind the sale. It wasn't her business though, and wasn't suspicious enough for her to report it to the appropriate authorities.

A few days later, a deposit of $375,000 was made into Wilkins' account from his holding company which was also his official employer, being "bonus for the purchase of GlamKat Inc." Again, the amount of the bonus was not overly suspect, however she couldn't shake off the feeling that something wasn't quite aboveboard. She couldn't ask him about it since it would reveal that she had knowledge of the GlamKat sale.

Over the next few weeks, she kept a vigilant eye on the transactions in his account. Individually none of them stood out, considering his wealth and his having declared to be an experienced investor. The sum of all parts though, painted a spurious picture. There were irregular deposits of varying amounts, cash or money order. When a particularly large amount came in, she took the opportunity to call him on the pretext of asking what he wanted to do with the sum.

"Nothing," he answered.

"At least put them in T-bonds, Mr Wilkins," she said. "All this cash sitting idle, it's not generating any income for you."

"I may want the money quickly. I'm looking at a few things, but nothing strikes my fancy at the moment."

"In which case I'm going to suggest weekly time deposits. At least you're getting some interest."

"If a deal comes up, I'll need the funds sooner than one week."

He was reluctant to agree to the vehicles she suggested, so she backed down. But the incident was noted at the back of her mind.

When he finally instructed her to move the millions, it was to purchase bonds originating from Eastern Europe. A high risk region though, in the game of risk vs. return, becoming increasingly popular with investors. Some countries emerged from the remains of the Soviet Bloc better than others, but not the two countries he was interested in: Bulgaria and Albania. She agreed to the Bulgarian holdings, but politely informed him that the Bank could not hold the Albanians. She also informed him that due to the increased risk exposure, there would be additional transfer fees, but he was so unconcerned about the cost that it triggered more alarm bells in her head. One of the red flags in her Anti-Money Laundering manual was a client who never questioned fees. Though many individuals were money insensitive, it could also be a sign that more importance was placed on enabling the flow of funds rather than the costs associated.

Two weeks after playing the bond market, he came up with another slightly unusual investment angle. Several wires were made to art galleries and auction houses. Again, not unheard of, for a wealthy individual to purchase art; but these wires were made to and from the galleries within a short timeframe. Another reason to call him.

"It's the newfangled thing, Willow. Investing in Art. I'm a long term collector, and I've just been invited to become a partner in an art gallery. Have to get your foot in the door before they get too famous or die! Well gosh, I don't want them to die, although we all die eventually; but that's when their worth goes up." She didn't know if his jovial uncle act was deliberate; she suspect it was to hide a shrewd and calculating mind.

"Yes of course. We have a small team based in Switzerland looking after that area. Do you want to get in touch with them?" Investing in fine art and vintage wine was indeed a new trend, it was also one of the best way of laundering money.

"No, I don't want that. I want to stay closer to home. I've been asked to sponsor the works of some talented artists — local, American artists," he emphasized. "Nurture talent, be a patron to the arts, may be help a philanthropic foundation or two, I can't ask for better publicity."

She couldn't find fault with that.

On the home front, things couldn't be better if she were a character in a romance novel. They didn't make big plans for Valentine's Day, since it was a weekday and, like all holidays, a busy time at the club. On a practical level, restaurants and florists took this opportunity to jack up prices, and there was nothing romantic about the blatant commercialism that assaulted them in the run-up to that day.

"If everyone contributed what they'll be spending on flowers and chocolate and fancy meals to charity, the world will be a better place." Tara was in a wistful mood as she was dressing for work.

"My world is a better place with you in it." Willow sensed Tara's melancholy and had quickly stepped in behind her. She was relieved that Tara relaxed as she put her arms around the blonde and rested her head on tense shoulders.

"How did I live without you for so long?" Tara sighed.

Willow kissed the answer into Tara's skin.

Later, she waved to Forrest and stepped into the dark club, already heaving with activity. There was a sensual air in the atmosphere, because of the day's theme. She hadn't told Tara that she was coming, wanting it to be a surprise.

"Willow!" Kendra, who was working reception, shouted a greeting. She was dressed like a early twentieth century cigarette girl, in a short skirt and fishnet stockings. Around her neck was a tray selling candy tobacco. They were doing Casablanca night, with hostesses in either raincoats, fedora hats and very little else or skimpy versions of Ingrid Bergman's suits. Willow had gotten used to the racy outfits; once she got to know them personally the costumes became just that — uniforms required for a job.

Perhaps infected by Tara's earlier pensiveness, but she felt cold and alone. Suddenly there was too much seduction, too much debauchery, too many liberties being taken. When she saw April sitting on the lap of a very drunk, bloated man and smiling emptily while he fondled her, she had to fight back nausea and the urge to pull her off him. Wrong night to come to this place.

The club was filled to the brim with revelers. She waved to the bartender who magically produced a stool and managed to squeeze her into a space at the corner of the bar. A heavy tumbler containing a double shot of Laphroaig was placed within easy reach.

She felt the same cold chill she felt before, one that she hadn't experienced for a long time. Since the time I saw Tara on stage and we danced in the Garden of Eden. Oh shit.

Tara had practically stopped working 'front of house' since they became a couple. It also coincided with Katrina's death so Willow wasn't sure if that was also a contributing factor. They had been so happy enjoying the beginning of their relationship that she hadn't had time to reflect on how she now felt about Tara's job. A part of her still regarded being a hostess-dancer as degrading and one step short of prostitution. Somehow in her mind Tara was excluded from that category, which was a dichotomy. How could she love Tara as Tara; yet feel disgust over Tara's job? It was more than jealousy — she didn't want to stop touching Tara because someone else had touched her; she didn't want to think that Tara had any reciprocal feelings toward the clients she interacted with. It was ridiculous, but these misanthropic thoughts did occasionally float unchecked from her subconscious.

"Hey, love. I wasn't expecting you," Tara had come up to her side without her noticing, looking lovely in an elegant vintage evening gown with her hair up and a sapphire pendant nestled in the hollow of her throat.

"You look beautiful." Willow ran the back of her hand over the silky fabric. "Are you on stage tonight?"

Tara smiled. "No, I don't like working on the floor anymore. Doesn't seem ... right. But there's a stomach bug going around and I'm on standby."

Willow kept her eyes on her drink, not trusting her initial reaction to Tara's statement. It was perfectly reasonable, and yet ... "Say no," she said suddenly.

"Say what?"

"I don't want you to go on the stage. Not tonight. Not ... ever."

"Why? And why now?"

Silence.

"Will? Talk to me."

Willow suppressed the tears and queasiness of a mad panic building from the bottom of her gut. "I don't want to share you. They look at you, I can't stand it."

"We've talked about this before, I didn't realize it was a problem."

"I know it's wrong and I'm being selfish and totally unfair! It hit me tonight, that I love you too much, it hurts. I was sitting here, and I couldn't breathe, like the whole room was closing in on me."

Tara's eyes narrowed, then her expression softened. "Wait here," she instructed.

"I'm sorry," Willow sniffed.

"Don't move. I'll be back in a minute. And Willow? Don't you dare touch that drink."

Willow's heart didn't stop pounding, not until Tara came back a few minutes later, her coat on her arms.

"Let's go home, Willow Rosenberg."

dibs :) off to read...

ETA: Watty, great chapter. I know there's badness afoot. Wilkins is a sneaky bastard and that buying of Spike's club for a buck was a bit too suspicious for my tastes. The dots are becoming visible, and I think Willow needs to connect them fast. Thank goodness Rayne wasn't in this chapter. I needed a break from him.

However, besides all the evil set-ups we have going on, Willow and Tara are going strong. They're in a responsible and loving relationship for the first time ever, and neither one looks like they're about to bolt. Heck, Tara even left when Willow asked her to. I wasn't sure if that meant she left just for the night or if she quit altogether, but either way it's a big step. Let's hope that dark cloud of horribleness that I know is coming will just pass them by. Zero percent chance of evil precipitation please.
