I, too, should apologize if my comment seemed to harsh, or worse caused you to be discouraged. That's the last thing I would want, for you to not continue with this story.

I know very well the balancing act of characterizing Willow and Tara in the never-never between the Original Canon and our various uberfic. It's like applying a tourniquet to your upper lip -- not as easy as they make it look on TV. :shock

As some have said here, it's good that people are posting FB, even if it's not always positive, and even that some of them are debating one another. I mean, it's good that Grimlock is giving you FB -- she's given up on me entirely. ;-)

Don't be afraid to experiment. After all, if you post this story somewhere else, there's nothing stopping you from editing it. We won't tell. :sh

Oh, don't worry. I was gonna finish it regardless. ;)

I know very well the balancing act of characterizing Willow and Tara in the never-never between the Original Canon and our various uberfic. It's like applying a tourniquet to your upper lip -- not as easy as they make it look on TV.

And yet you manage to do it so well. (And yes, I am ass kissing here. Your fics, after all, were part of the reason I'm writing this.)

As some have said here, it's good that people are posting FB, even if it's not always positive, and even that some of them are debating one another. I mean, it's good that Grimlock is giving you FB -- she's given up on me entirely. ;-)

Though to be fair, it's not like she's always been positive. (Still love ya, though.) And its nice to engage in conversation.

Well, I am going to post it at ExtraFlamey. (If I can ever get my password...) I don't think I'll change a thing, though...

Sorry for not being more prompt in leaving feedback to the new chapters. Just wanted to say that this story keeps making me a very happy :kgeek .

Chapter 10: The W/T interaction at the beginning made me "Awwwww!" and squee and "Awwwwww!" some more. They must've been really wrapped in it if the Gungans could sneak up on them, eh? ;)

Chapter 11: Willow is so cute when she's feeling guilty. *snuggles her* And "Awwwww!" for Tara still loving her. And ::angst:: for Tara's premonitions/dream!

I don't think you're doing Tara's characterisation wrong (and I'm not just saying that to make you feel better, either). She's both IC as Tara, and not unbelievable as a Jedi Master, IMHO. After all, even Jedi Masters are human, as has been said above.

Can't wait for Chapter 12!

All right, folks. After a week of back and forth arguments, I've fnally gotten chapter twelve ready for you all. This chapter is dedicated to all of those who still believe in me, and to cecile for being the inspiration for the wallpaper that currently decorates my desktop. (If you wanna know what the heck I'm talking about, go over to pedal of roses' Wallpaper thread in Magic in Two)

And now, without further claptrap, let's get on with the show.

Image

Chapter Twelve

The primitives were not as easily routed as OOM-9 thought. They appeared to have developed weaponry that had laid waste to the first waves of troops. But that had given the Droid Control Computer updated tactics in order to implement different strategies in succeeding waves. Those droids invaded the city with much greater success, sending the defenders back to secure more advantageous positions to counterattack.

But it would not matter. Whether the primitives had ten or ten thousand defenders, they could not hope to stand against the might of the Trade Federation army.

Raising the electrobinoculars to his optics, he scanned the area, detected the weakest point in the primitive’s defences, and directed the next wave to assault that location.

**

Willow was off the bed the moment Tara had finished her proclamation, lightsaber in hand and senses on high alert. She wasn’t at all comfortable about the prospect of going into combat. The last time she had, she had felt something. Something that called to her through the darkest depths of her own being, that tempted her with great promises and whatever her heart wanted.

She had heard Master Yoda drill into her the temptations that the Dark Side offered to those who felt its call. But she knew what she wanted most. And that was Tara’s love. That made her feel guilty about what she had done the previous day. When Tara had been in danger, she had lost control of herself and attacked with wild abandon. After the fact, she had felt guilty about what she had done, and had tried to change the subject when Tara had brought it up. It seemed to work, but that didn’t seem to make her feel any better.

She had hoped to explain herself after she had got Tara to open up about herself. But now that opportunity would never come. And she couldn’t decide if she felt happy or sad about it.

Willow stepped up beside Tara and looked out at the chaos erupting around them. Gungan sentries on both foot and kaadu threw energy balls at the oncoming droid forces, while others wielded clubs and spears at close range to knock other droids off their feet. All, however, were taking losses and were gradually being forced back by the oncoming onslaught.

"Everywhere we go, all we do is cause trouble," Tara realised. "Innocents die because we make a mistake that causes a galaxy wide incident. Innocents die because we do nothing. Sometimes I wish that the Jedi would not become involved in the affairs of other people. It’s not our place."

“We’ve got to help them,” Willow said.

The comment broke Tara out of her thoughts, And despite her feelings and the situation going on around them, she managed a smile. “Never change, Willow. You’re perfect just the way you are.”

Willow smiled back as she rested her thumb on the activation switch of her lightsaber. “Let’s go be heroes.

**

OOM-9 heard the broadcast report from the infantry units on the front lines, stating that the primitives were now on the run, and that their complete destruction was imminent. Had he the processing power, he would feel pride at this statement. As it was, however, it was merely one more assigned goal. He would merely accomplish their desired goal and leave the happiness to his organic masters.

His thoughts were interrupted as he received a priority message from one of the commanders, indicating the presence of two new combatants. Further explanation was rendered impossible as a burst of static erupted from the comlink.

Raising his electrobinoculars, he surveyed the area, and was surprised to find two new individuals arriving and fighting their way through the battle droids. Scans indicated humanoids armed with…

Lightsabers. It was the Jedi.

As a battle droid, OOM-9 was incapable of considering the concepts of “coincidence” or “luck”. The two Jedi was merely a new piece of data to assess and respond to. However, for a mere two humans, the predicted complexities caused by their presence were considerable.

“Droidekas deploy to front lines, search-destroy parameters transmitting.”

Though, of course, the end result would be the same.

**

Tara twirled her lightsaber in one hand, decapitating a battle droid. Its head clattered to the ground as she stuck a hand out and Force pushed it into a group of incoming droids, sending them crashing down to the surface.

As much as she detested combat, she found how readily it came to her. Her training under Master Halcyon had given her more than her fair share of combat experience, and she had devoted her studies to the mastery of Soresu. Most Jedi considered the technique to be more passive than the other forms, but Tara found a comfort in it that she considered to be a natural extension of her more passive nature.

Willow had no particular grounding in any form, but as a Padawan, she knew the basic of Shii-Cho. Shii-Cho was effective against multiple combatants, but it relied on the user’s emotional level in order to be effective. And though Willow was usually level headed, she tended to get rather emotional when those she considered friends were threatened.

This brought her mind briefly back to what had occurred the previous day with the AAT. Willow had attempted to diffuse her questioning when she asked what had happened, and she had found it humorous. At the time, it was mostly because of the situation they had found themselves in and her need to find a laugh in pretty much anything. But now…it made her wonder…

She looked at Willow now, who was blocking shots from multiple sources and slicing droids in half, doing a much better job at it than she had figured. That too, gave her pause. Willow was proficient, she had to admit. And Tara had noted that, given time, Willow could become a master of Djem So or Ataru. But what concerned her was the fact that those styles tended to favour more aggressive tactics. She always knew that Willow was, at times, more action oriented than she was. But it concerned her to know that her lightsaber style tended to focus more towards what other Jedi jokingly referred to as “aggressive negotiations”.

Bisecting a droid and sending its remains scattering across the area with a flick of the Force, she began to advance forward to assist the other Gungans, who were gathering nearby in what looked like an escape.

She sliced apart another droid, shut down her lightsaber and clipped it to her belt. She then ran up to what appeared to be the head Gungan. “What’s going on?”

The Gungan turned to look at her, a frown instantly appearing on its amphibious face. “Yousa! Yousa causen dis!”

The accusation stung her like a blaster bolt. “But…but we…we didn’t…”

“Master!”

Willow’s cry brought her around to find Willow facing off against several droidekas. She appeared to be holding her own, but Tara knew that Willow couldn’t last. She started forward, but only made it several feet when Willow was knocked backward as the droideka’s blaster fire knocked her lightsaber from her hand and sent her into the wall.

“Willow!’

Tara collapsed to her knees, as if someone had fired a sonic blaster at her legs and turned her leg bones to powder. Time seemed to slow to a crawl, the briefest of seconds stretching for an eternity. Her heart hammered in her chest, overshadowing the sound of blaster fire in front of her and the shouting from behind her.

She dimly became aware of the fact that she was moving, two sets of hands dragging her backward. She wanted to yell at them, tell them to leave her behind. She had left Willow defenceless. And now she would end up a prisoner of the Trade Federation.

She had let everyone down. Qui-Gon. Obi-Wan. Master Halcyon. The Gungans. And, worst of all, Willow.

She wanted to die. Perhaps she was dead.

There was no other way to explain the emptiness she felt in her heart.

**

The Jedi lay crumpled in a heap against the wall, her lightsaber lying deactivated on the floor several feet away. As the droidekas surrounded her, a figure stepped between them. It reached down to pick up her lightsaber, examining it ever so briefly before he clipped it to the belt beside his own.

The figure regarded the Jedi with contempt. It had been too easy. He had hoped for a challenge, like the one he had faced on Tatooine. But he knew that Jedi would arrive soon. And that this one’s Master would be with him. When they arrived, he would take great pleasure in killing them both.

The figure felt a presence approach him. “Viceroy Gunray requests that we return to the Palace with the Jedi prisoner. He will deal with her then.”

The figure passed his glance to the droid, who continued to stand at attention as if nothing was amiss. Still, after a few moments, it backed off, along with the droidekas.

Darth Maul returned his gaze to the Jedi in front of him. ”All too easy,” he thought. ”But not to worry, Jedi. Your capture shall bring to me prey worthy of my blade.”

Hi Sith - good update!

The first thing I've got to say is - What the bloody hell was Darth Maul doing there? Isn't he supposed to be on his way to Tatooine.

Secondly, I don't think that Tara has been taken by the Trade Federation - I think that the Gungans have got her.

So, Willow has felt a little of what the dark side has to offer. I can't wait to see how you play this out.

Also interesting was Tara thoughts.

‘Everywhere we go, all we do is cause trouble,’ Tara realised. ‘Innocents die because we make a mistake that causes a galaxy wide incident. Innocents die because we do nothing. Sometimes I wish that the Jedi would not become involved in the affairs of other people. It’s not our place.’

I get the feeling that being a Jedi is not going to be a lifetime thing for Tara.

Looking forward to your next update.

caz:

He was. But those events already happened in the background. I hoped that the passage of time that was established here would have established the fact that the events of the first half of TPM have already happened, but I guess that didn't work out too well.

In any case, this was my attempt to be as respectful to established canon as I could. But sometimes it was a bit too difficult. Remember how I said that the Expanded Universe tends to be a bit too confusing? Well, there is a level from "Galactic Battlegrounds" (great game, BTW) which has Maul leading a group of Trade Federation droids to Otoh Gunga. I wanted to have him here for this (though not till the end, as it would provide a surprise to the readers), but I couldn't exactly figure out how to work that around my story (Continuity is a bitch even at the best of times). I figured that I should at least make an attempt, though, regardless of how well I could pull it off.

Besides, its not like having Maul here is that bad anyway. There is a scene in the movie where Gunray talks to Sidious and says that the planet has been completly taken over and Sidious sends Maul to join them. I thought about including said scene in this chapter, (playing off how Gunray is feeling too overconfident about the situation) but I couldn't quite think of a credible way to shoehorn it in, so I just let it fall by the wayside, thinking that the reader would assume that it happened "off screen".

And I wanted to have Maul here because he plays an important part in Willow's character development later.

Secondly, I don't think that Tara has been taken by the Trade Federation - I think that the Gungans have got her.

I know that. But when Tara said that, she was thinking of Willow. I was trying to established the fact that it was Tara's responsibility to watch out for Willow (something that was set up earlier and I think will come across a whole lot more in the next chapter). Maybe once I've finished Chapter Thirteen and you see how it all fits together, it will make some more sense.

So, Willow has felt a little of what the dark side has to offer. I can't wait to see how you play this out.

Like I said, I'm planning a whole chapter about just that. Not only that, but we'll get into Maul's head a bit more.

I get the feeling that being a Jedi is not going to be a lifetime thing for Tara.

I felt that part was very important to establish, since it shows how much Tara's beginning to put Willow ahead of other priorities.

Willowlover: Yeah, everything's going to hell in a handbasket for Tara. What's worse is that she thinks its her fault. This becomes important later, so remember this.

Heya. First things first : poor Tara. :( She shouldn't blame herself so.

You know, probably my favorite jedi character ever is Jolee Bindo from KOTOR. Now here's a character who dislikes both excesses of the light and dark side and found a balance between them. Not only that, but he can live with himself too. Instead of struggling, he's comfortably in the middle. There's something to say in favor of neutrality in some cases.

I'm just wondering here how self-aware OOM-9 is. He is a droid general, but is he controlled by the Droid Control Ship like the others, or is he capable of independent thought.

I guess if a droid army is to be produced cheaply, the average soldier might not have an advanced computer capable of independant thought. I think it'd be possible to make an army of independantly thinking droids like HK-47, but those'd be too expensive to mass produce and, face it, an army of HK-47's would be dangerous to everybody, including the side that commissioned them. :D One is dangerous enough... besides, we already know he hates to be copied from the HK-50 debacle. :)

Liked the bit on the lightsaber forms. I must admit that my favorite it jar'kai. Uh, did I spell that correctly? It's the one where the jedi fights with two sabers, one in each hand.

Now it's time for Tara to rescue dear Willow. :D I think you're doing fine here. Keep it up.
Max : Do you mind if I drive?
Sam : Not if you mind me clawing at the dashboard and shrieking like a cheerleader.

Yeah, that's something that I tried to figure out (and which Chris has pointed out to me). It's always been my belief that the droid commanders were a bit more independent than the rank and file infantry units (they would have to be if they had to communicate with people like Gunray and co.) I don't think that canon ever really established that, though. Still, it's something that works for me.

Liked the bit on the lightsaber forms. I must admit that my favorite it jar'kai. Uh, did I spell that correctly? It's the one where the jedi fights with two sabers, one in each hand.

Yeah, that's it. I know that I didn't really establish their fighting styles before (other than the fact that Willow's knowledge is limited to basic and that Tara's often left her vulnerable). Of course, I had to do some research into this (lightsaber combat being one of the few areas of the SW universe in which I am not well versed), and I established the fact that Willow, as a Padawan, knows something about Shii-Cho. What I found on the Wiki also made me realize that it would be great to explain Willow's earlier transgression against the AAT, as best described in the following passage:

Obi-Wan commented Form I as wild, raw and deadly, requiring much emotional heat. The Shii-Cho form is good versus many enemies, and blaster-wielding enemies, but weak versus a single enemy, a lightsaber-wielding enemy and Force powers. Its simplicity is its strength, making it a very good style to use if all else fails.

Now, you may ask "How can it be a good form to use against blaster enemies, yet Willow gets taken down by the droidekas?" Well, you didn't exactly see Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon stick around to face two onboard the Trade Federation ship, right? Well, multiply the enemies by three, subtract the experience in lightsaber combat by a lot, and...well, you know.

As for Tara, I wanted her style to reflect her fighting method: peace through any means possible, with combat being the last resort. I had thought about making her a Niman master, but, while that was a good defensive form, I had already established her as being able to take care of herself when the situation warranted. This goes against what Niman is all about, as described on the Wiki:

Form VI was the standard style at and around the time period of the Clone Wars and the Great Jedi Purge. This combat discipline was often called the "Diplomat's Form." Unfortunately, many of the Jedi at the Battle of Geonosis were killed because of their reliance on this form, including the Form VI practitioner Coleman Trebor, whose technique could not defend against Jango Fett's masterfully placed blaster shots. As a result, many Jedi perceived Form VI to be a weaker form of lightsaber combat.

Form VI attempted to balance all elements of lightsaber combat, combining the Forms that came before into a less intensely demanding combat style. The result was that the users' skill in each individual area of lightsaber combat was only moderate - they did not excel in any one area. This broad generalization made Form VI well suited for diplomats, as they could spend their time training in the areas of politics and negotiation instead of combat training.

So I went with the next best option: Soresu. From reading the "Revenge of the Sith" novel, and seeing how well Obi-Wan's battle against Grievous was written, that it could be a good style to apply to Tara. Also, what I felt best applied to the style could be explained in the Wiki:

The third form of lightsaber combat utilized motions that occurred very close to the body, in an attempt to achieve near-total protection and expend as little energy as possible while executing moves. This technique minimized the body's exposure, making a well-trained practitioner nearly invincible. Followers of Soresu comfortably remained on the defensive until their opponent left an opening that a Soresu practitioner usually could exploit in multiple ways. Soresu was best described as a passive form of combat, and one that was used by those who were extremely patient and reserved.

Due to the emphasis on defense training, Form III involved preparation for prolonged battles so that the user would be able to learn as much as possible about their opponent or opponents whilst engaged in possibly deadly combat. Also, by being more capable in lengthy battles, a Soresu user was in a position to gain control of the situation and provide multiple options for the duelist; such as the choice to either kill, disarm, or even reason with their opponent. Many Soresu practitioners survived the Battle of Geonosis, thanks in part to its specialization in fending off blaster fire. In fact, all Jedi probably had to be trained in some minimal amount of Form III when they were younglings and/or Padawans to prepare them when fending off blaster-wielding opponents, while well trained users could survive even when surrounded by multiple attackers. Soresu's greatest power lay in the endurance and control a practitioner eventually developed. Masters of the form left no opening for their opponents to take advantage of, while waiting for the eventual lapses in their opponent's own defense.

Jedi Master Mace Windu noted that, unlike any of the other combat styles, Soresu was not an answer to a particular type of weakness. Vaapad was an answer to Windu's inner darkness; Ataru was Yoda's answer to his limited reach and advanced age; and Djem So was Anakin Skywalker's answer to his boiling emotions. Towards the end of the Clone Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi was acknowledged as "the master of Soresu" by Master Windu. It was because of this fact that Kenobi was chosen by the Council as the Jedi best suited to defeat General Grievous due to his Mastery of Form III. Soresu was considered the consummate Jedi combat form in that it embraced a passive way of life and a literal expression of the Jedi's tenement to defend rather than attack.

You may also notice that I had Tara mention that Willow, given enough time and training, could become a master of Djem So or Ataru. These forms are more aggressive than Soresu and Shii-Cho, and wouldn't really apply to either Willow or Tara.

Now it's time for Tara to rescue dear Willow. :D

Yup. And don't worry. She'll have a little help. :)

Oh no, Willow is captured by the droids and the Trade Federation, and was Tara dragged away by the angry Gungans? Just when they were getting somewhere, too, says the part of my brain that only wants the WT smoochies. :D I wonder if they will remain separated for a while or if a certain redheaded Jedi will take crazy chances and go berserk and fight her way free? Only an update will tell. Looking forward to it.

G'day, Sith.

"Everywhere we go, all we do is cause trouble," Tara realised. "Innocents die because we make a mistake that causes a galaxy wide incident. Innocents die because we do nothing. Sometimes I wish that the Jedi would not become involved in the affairs of other people. It’s not our place."

Ahh, Tara, you sweet, silly girl. She needs to realize that none of this is her fault. Even if the Jedi hadn't come to Naboo, the Trade Federation would have still invaded. I guess she's figuring that the droids are invading Gungan's territory in search of her and Willow too. That fits in with her place as a consular I reckon, since from a military standpoint an attack on the Gungan's was an inevitability.

That was a nice bit of back story on the different lightsabre forms. I'm behind on my SW reading at the moment, so that saves me having to do any research, and anything that helps me be lazy gets a big thumbs up. :grin

Man ... er ... woman down! Woman down, people! I'm feeling a bit concerned for Willow here (even if I know she has to be okay in the long run) because multiple hits from Destroyer Droid blaster cannons can't be good for you. Unless they were stun blasts?

Still, far better for Willow to get shot, rather than try and fight Darth Maul. I can't help but imagine that he'd slice her into kibble right quick smart.

Nice update, Alex. Now, bring on the rescue!

Cheers,
Paul.

Wow, Tara's really shaken. And being separated from Willow (which she will no doubt blame herself for completely, in spite of the whole mitigating factor of there being a war going on around them) isn't going to help. I'll be interested to see whether she descends into despair completely, or whether she puts it aside on the surface and gets on with her duty as a Jedi, while it eats away at her from within.

Nice to see Mauly again - I wondered what it was that he'd been doing in between Tatooine and showing up in the hanger. At least he's got a plan - that puts him one step ahead of 'movie Maul', who seemed to spend most of his time playing with a Gameboy or something, and only remembering he was supposed to be hunting Jedi every fifty minutes or so. I far prefer this version.

Hers Always: Thanks for dropping by. And don't worry about feeling embarassed about leaving feedback. I'm just grateful for comments.

Emms: Yeah. It's bad. But don't worry. Things will turn out good in the end. Well, for a while, anyway.

Sally: Yeah. It really goes back to what Joss Whedon said about Buffy: If you make things too good, no one will watch. I don't really see a reunion until the end, though. It gives me a chance to play on the two characters seperately, setting up things that will be important later.

Cecile: Yeah, I just had to thank you for giving pedal of roses the inspiration for that wicked ass wallpaper. You rock. :kdevil

Paul: That may be true, but look at it from Tara's point of view. She and Willow find sanctuary in Otoh Gunga and everything's Okey-dokey. Several hours later, the droids show up to total the place. If you're someone like Tara, you automatically think that you were responsible for that.

And it really was the Gungan's own fault, to be honest. I mean, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan did warn them, after all.

As for Willow being knocked out, I was only planning to have her lose her lightsaber and get knocked out into the wall. I never really intended for her to get hit by the blaster fire. Then again, its not like she would die if she did. It's my understanding that you'd only die from a blaster shot if you get hit in the head or the chest. Getting hit anywhere else would pretty much be the equivalent of getting a bikini wax.

In other words, it would HURT LIKE FRIGGIN' HELL!

As for Willow vs. Darth Maul, I don't wanna give anything away, but I should mention that its in the cards. ;)

Chris: Tara's going to dwell on this for quite a bit, though the return of a pair of certain Jedi is most likely going to lift her spirits. If for no other reason that she'll feel that she won't have to have the whole situation on her shoulders.

And yeah, Maul has a plan...which you'll find out soon. :kdevil

Devi: Thanks for your comments. And you won't have to wait very long. I got chapter thirteen beta comments back from Chris, and am working on it even as we speak. It'll probably go up sometime later this afternoon. :)

All right, folks. Here we go. The rescue of Willow begins now. :kdevil

Image

Chapter Thirteen

Tara was only vaguely aware of the fact that she was being moved against her will. She was even less vaguely aware of being thrown, rather unceremoniously, into one of the many subs that made up the flotilla of escaping craft from Otoh Gunga. Her thoughts drifted back many years ago, to the first time she had encountered Willow in Coruscant’s lower levels. She had seemed so…helpless. But at the same time, someone with untapped potential. Even then, she could tell that their destines were intertwined.

She had made her case to the Council, saying that Willow could be a valuable asset to the Jedi Order, and that she should not be cast out because of her transgression. Tara had even offered to take Willow as her Padawan learner. She normally was not that direct when it came to dealing with the Council, or anyone for that matter. But there was something that just would not let Willow come to harm.

As time passed, Tara watched out for Willow whenever she could. Her duties as a Jedi Master, however, kept her on missions for much of her time. Fearing for Willow’s safety, she had left her at the Temple those times when the task at hand she thought was too difficult or dangerous for her to be exposed to. For those missions that were easier, Tara usually brought Willow along, even though she usually remained at whatever domicile or hotel room they rented for the occasion.

This mission was very much like the latter. Or, at least, it had appeared to be at first glance. Then again, appearances were often deceiving. There was no way that Tara would have allowed Willow to come with her had she any idea about how bad the situation would end up becoming, even with the assistance of Master Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. But she knew that she had to expose Willow to what lay beyond the safety that she had been used to. And this had seemed to be the best time.

Then things had gone wrong. And they had steadily got worse as time went on.

The only thing that had felt good about the situation was telling Willow about her past. Ironically, considering the seriousness of the situation, it was that moment that had scared her the most. There was so much that she had kept secret from her out of fear. She realized that it wasn’t nearly as bad as she thought it would be. Willow was always someone who would find the best of a person, even the coldest and most heartless. She knew that there were those in the Temple that had often joked that she would make Trandoshans and Wookiees get along.

Although she would never openly voice it, she often agreed.

Now Willow was gone. And she had been too crippled by her own fears to do anything.

It shamed her.

She was a Jedi Master. She was supposed to keep her emotions in check. What was causing her to feel this way?

Willow.

It pained Tara to admit it, but Willow was, in many ways, the cause of her emotional disarray. Even before this, she had felt something for her. It’s what made her take her case to the Council when they considered expelling her from the Order. It’s why she always kept her safely tucked away whenever they went on missions together. It’s what let her open up to Willow when she couldn’t open up to anyone else.

And it’s what made the thought of losing her all the more painful.

She felt herself being lifted out of the seat she had been tossed into and prodded not so gently forward. She complied, offering no hint of resistance. She couldn’t bring herself to say or do anything to protest. Her thoughts were on Willow and how she had let her down.

”She expected me to watch over her,” she thought. ”She expected me to be fearless. And I failed her.”

She came back to her senses as she found herself surrounded by Gungans, some of which were on kaadu, others on foot. And all of whom had weapons pointed in her direction. Two of the Gungans parted as the rotund shape of the Boss stepped up to face her, his face accentuating the hate in his eyes.

“Yousa haven a lotta explainin du do,” he spat.

Tara involuntarily flinched at the accusation that she was in some way responsible for what had happened. Though she noted that there was no reason for her to feel guilty. She had done nothing wrong. How was she supposed to know that the droids would have invaded the city? If anything, it was the Gungans’ own isolationist tendencies that had led them to this situation. She felt that she should say as much to the Boss and attempt to gain control of the situation.

She kept silent, the resolve to speak in her own defense evaporating as soon as it had surfaced. She merely hung her head in shame, her thoughts once again drifting to Willow.

“I’m…” she said, cursing herself for stuttering. “I’m…s…sorr…sorry…”

The Boss grunted. “’Sorry’ not goen to be getting us back Otoh Gunga. Meebee wesa kill yousa now and riden ourselves of another mighty huge problem.”

The tears began to well in Tara’s eyes. “Maybe that would be a good idea.”

The Boss fixed Tara with a suspicious glare. Clearly he was surprised by this turn of events. “What trick are yousa pullin?”

Tara moved to sit down on a nearby rock. The Gungans nearest to her raised their weapons to stop her, but the Boss waved them off. She sat down without resistance and gazed into the forest around them.

“I know you think that we led the droids to you,” she said, her tone as neutral as it could manage. “I…I don’t know if we did…and I know that…I…I know that…nothing I say will convince you otherwise.”

The Boss fixed Tara with a icy glare. “Whaten game doo you thinken yousa playin’?”

Tara looked up, a single tear running down her cheek. “What makes you think that I’m playing a game?”

“Dissen udder Jedi playen to mesa sense of generosity when theysa taken Jar Jar Binks,” the Boss explained. “Jar Jar knownen that if hesa come backen to Otoh Gunga, hesa bein crunched to death. Mesa noen wanten to do that, really. Jar Jar isen gud Gungan. He just…clumsy.” He shook his head violently, flecks of spittle erupting from his mouth as he did. “Mesa shoulda knowen bedder dan to be nicen to strange peoples.”

Tara couldn’t help but agree, seeing how foolish it was to have tried to ask for their help. With the Naboo people enslaved and the Gungans now driven from their home, it meant that there was a lot of work to do. She had thought that Master Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan would be here to help. She didn’t feel terribly great about having to deal with the situation by herself. It didn’t help that she felt largely responsible for much of it. Tara had promised herself that she would find a way to set things right. This was a problem that had quickly gotten out of hand because of her lack of action. It had led to many innocents being harmed. Including Willow.

Tara made a vow, right then and there, that no matter what happened, she would do whatever it was that was necessary in order to ensure Willow’s safety. She knew that making such a promise went against what the normal tenets of what being a Jedi entailed, but she didn’t care. She could keep herself under control and not let herself get too emotional. After all, she surmised, Willow would eventually become a Knight. And Tara couldn’t keep her protected forever.

It was then that a whistle brought both her and the Boss’ head around to face another Gungan who had come from across the hill.

“Yousa bedder come ere, Boss,” the new arrival said. “Yousa not gunna liken dis.”

The Boss looked at Tara for a moment longer before waddling up the nearby small hill. After a moment’s hesitation, Tara moved to follow, only to find herself staring down the pointed end of several spears. She held her ground and listened to the Boss as he talked to whoever it was. She heard one of the Gungans announce that the new arrivals included “Queen Amidala”. But that wasn’t possible. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan had gotten her off the planet…hadn’t they?

She cringed as the Boss made the comment about the Naboo bringing the droids to their underwater city. She wasn’t too enamored about the fact that he was apparently spreading the blame for what had happened. It was all she could do not to go up and correct his mistake.

She then heard something surprising. A second person saying that she was Queen Amidala, that the whole planet was in danger, and then…begging for help? That didn’t sound like something she would have expected

It apparently was not what the Boss had been expecting either, as he broke out into a deep laugh and commented that they might be friends. Tara could not help but give a faint smile at the comment. Why did people always figure things like that out after the opportunity to do something about it had passed?

The Boss, whose name she had finally learned to be Nass, returned a few minutes later and gestured to the other Gungans to lower their spears. He then fixed Tara with a smile.

“Mesa thinks theresa someone out dere that yousa much enjoyen to see,” he said, pointing back the way he had come. Tara hesitated, then rushed forward to look. She saw a lot of Gungans, some uniformed soldiers and…

“Master Qui-Gon! Obi-Wan!”

All her years of Jedi training evaporated in an instant. She was no longer a wise and skilled Jedi Master, at peace with herself and with the Force. She was now a woman with the tendencies of a youngling. She rushed forward and enveloped the elder Master in an embracing hug.

“I’m so glad that you’ve come back,” she said. “I’ve made such a mess of things.”

Qui-Gon looked down at Tara. “How?”

Tara realized that she couldn’t really lie about the situation, especially now that she had brought it up. She normally wouldn’t have brought it up, but she had felt that the situation had gotten so out of hand that she couldn’t really conceal it. “I…I’ve done things that I…I really shouldn’t have. And Willow…I let her…she’s been…”

Tara felt Qui-Gon’s embrace lessen slightly as he listened to her. “You did everything you could, Master Maclay. No one could have expected you to do anything more. You shouldn’t think that you could try to do more than you’re capable of. That’s the path to darkness.”

Tara nodded in agreement, though she really didn’t have any belief in what she was being told. She was just glad that the burden of dealing with the situation was no longer fully on her. Now she can concentrate fully on doing whatever was necessary to get Willow back.

And to make sure that nothing would ever harm her again.

**

Nute Gunray was afraid.

This was a feeling that was not unfamiliar to him. He had been afraid ever since this operation began, with varying levels of intensity. He had managed to assuage his fear, despite the relative weak resistance that threatened to complicate things. He had even communicated to Lord Sidious the previous evening how the planet was firmly under their control, despite the fact that the primitives had yet to be dealt with. But his fears had been brought to the surface by the arrival of two individuals. One of which he was currently speaking to.

“I cannot believe that you have done this,” he was explaining to the second Sith, who was walking beside him as he traveled down one of the corridors of the Palace. “I had hoped that you would have taken care of her. By bringing her here, you’ve endangered us all. I cannot understand why you have done this.”

The pair stopped outside a door, on which the Sith pressed the release.

“My reasons are not your concern,” he said, without bothering to face the Neimoidian. He stepped inside, and the door shut behind him; Gunray was moving down the corridor at lightning speed before it had closed.

**

Maul stood by the doorway, watching the young Jedi struggle in her bonds. He had the droids shackle her to the floor and run the spokes that held those bonds dug deep into the floor. This way, she could not escape. She was a pitiful creature, but she did have a spark. Maul had seen that spark before. His own Master had molded that spark into the lethal weapon that he was today. If he could take that spark and mold it in his own image, then she would become a useful tool for his Master’s plan.

His Master had sensed a disturbance in the Force. There was no doubt that she was part of that disturbance. That alone was cause enough to end her existence. But his Master had contacted him en route to Naboo and say that events were in motion on that world that could be turned to their advantage. That required her to remain in perfect health.

Physical health, at least. Her mental health was his to manipulate as he saw fit.

Her head raised to look at the new arrival, and noted that her emerald eyes hummed with barely restrained anger. Good. Anger was a useful tool. She would need to be taught how to use it.

That lesson would begin now.

He waved his gloved left hand, unfastening the binders enclosing her arms and legs and clattering to the floor. She paused, looking up at him with surprise. Her surprise grew as Maul withdrew her lightsaber, which he had taken from her, and tossed it in her direction.

It clattered to the ground several feet in front of her. She moved cautiously towards it before reaching out with one hand to take it. Maul felt her hesitation. She was confused. They had gone to all this trouble to capture her, and now they were letting her go?

That hesitation slowly evaporated and was replaced by a singular feeling: desire. A desire to be free from her confinement. A desire to be in the loving embrace of a comrade. And a desire to do whatever was necessary in order to accomplish that.

Igniting the lightsaber, she jumped to her feet and leapt at him. Before she could bring her blade up to deliver a killing blow, however, Maul was up in the air, performing a flip that sent him over her head to land several feet behind her. The Jedi was momentarily stunned, but quickly collected herself and turned to face him. That moment of indecision had nearly cost her, as Maul delivered a swift kick that she barely dodged in time.

As the Jedi continued to attempt to bring her lightsaber down on his head, Maul found himself becoming impressed with the Jedi’s technique and tenacity. From the reports given by the droids, she had not been much of a fighter. But it seemed that, when angered, she was more than capable of taking care of herself. From all appearances, she displayed all the markings that would make her a true Ataru master. Ataru was a style that emphasized strength and power, but left the combatant vulnerable.

Blocking another series of attacks, Maul allowed a feral grin to form on his face. His master has taught him the art of lightsaber combat, and he was a consummate Juyo perfectionist. This made his attacks more lethal, as they were fueled by his anger and ferocity. That was the difference between the two: the Jedi’s anger was abundant, but unfocused. This made her dangerous, but easily exploitable.

As the Jedi delivered an upward strike, Maul extended his right hand, blocking the attempted attack. He followed this up by extending his left hand and sending a strong burst of Force energy into her chest, sending her flying backward into the wall. The Jedi collapsed in a boneless heap, her lightsaber landing deactivated several feet away. She got to her hands and knees and made a desperate attempt to reach for her weapon, but as her fingers closed in, it flew into the air and landed in his outstretched left hand.

Maul took a moment to admire the weapon. It was sturdy. It was well constructed. And it was unsuited for her. As the Jedi watched in horror, he withdrew his own weapon with his free hand and thumbed the activation switch. And with in quickness that prevented her from acting, he threw her lightsaber into the air, brought his own blade up and sliced the weapon in half.

“NO!”

The Jedi began to sob as the two pieces fell to the ground between them. She crawled on her hands and knees to take them in her hands. “No…no…no…”

‘Your first lesson, Jedi,” he said, nothing with some satisfaction as her head snapped up, her tear-rimmed eyes displaying full blown rage.

Maul stepped towards the door and opened it, two droids stepping inside to take the Jedi back to the binders and chain her to the ground again.

He did not stay to watch. His purpose had been fulfilled. For now. There would be time for her to learn what it was that she needed to know. In the meantime, he would await the arrival of the others. They would come to rescue their comrade.

And when they did, they would meet their end.

**

Willow was ashamed. She had let her emotions get the better of her. And it had led to her utter humiliation at the hands of that…creature. She found herself wondering who he was. He was a Zabrak, that much she obviously knew. And he had a lightsaber. But it was a lightsaber with a red blade.

But that meant that he was a Sith. And that was impossible. The Sith had been defeated a thousand years ago. There was no way they could have survived.

But there was no other label she could give to him. And it gave her a fresh reason to be confused about the situation. What were the Trade Federation doing working with a Sith?

It was all too confusing for her to figure out.

What was also confusing was the fact that she was still alive and in no way mistreated. She had expected to be killed immediately after she had been captured. But she had not been. In fact, aside from being chained down, there was no indication that she was to be harmed.

Why? What purpose was her continued existence to these people?

”What is it about me that they want?” she thought as the droids set about putting the chains on her wrists and ankles once again. ”I’m…I’m nothing. I’m nobody. I don’t have anything anyone would want. Except…”

It was so obvious that she was surprised she hadn't thought of it before. She realized that she wasn’t important. She was merely a tool. She was going to be used by these people to bring the Queen and the Jedi back. And that meant…

”Oh, Tara,” she thought as the droids left the room. Her eyes drifted to the sections of her lightsaber. Tara’s lightsaber. The one part of her life that she had given up freely. And now it was destroyed. Gone. Lost forever.

Much like Tara would be, if she were to come rescue her. Even if she had an army, there was no way that Tara could get close enough to save her.

But she would try. Willow had been with her for ten years. And one thing she knew was that one Tara was set on a path, she never wavered. No matter how dangerous it would be.

And that meant that she would come for her now. And that meant that she would most likely die, if not because of the droids, then because of the Sith.

And it would be all because of her.

”I’m sorry, Tara.”

That's so sad. Willows lightsabre cut in half by DM. The one piece of Tara that she had. Please, if you have Willow walk the path of the Dark Side, have her kill Maul slowly and painfully. :-D
Not that i'm sick or sadistick, but Maul needs to die.

G'day, Sith.

Well, I've heard of post traumatic stress, but I reckon Tara's lucky that she didn't just get dumped by the Gungans, since they seemed so intent on blaming her for all of their droid-based woes. Aquatic wankers.

I think Tara might have shot herself in the foot with her tactic of shielding Willow from her more risky missions. If Willow's never exposed to danger, she's not going to learn how to protect herself from it, as we have seen in the course of this story.

I can understand where she's coming from though. Who hasn't felt the desire to protect those we love from anything and everything that threatens them?

Ah, the recruiting techniques of the Sith. Ya gotta love them ... or, alternatively, if you aren't a sadist, hate them with a passion. I liked the comparison between the two combatant's fighting styles. They both have anger, but where Darth Maul's is focused and tight, Willow's is reckless and passionate. Seems very in character for our favorite redhead.

Now, I'm a little confused here; was Darth Maul fighting Willow bare handed the whole time? I can see him being both skilled, and arrogant enough to do so, but then how was he blocking Willow's attacks? The only thing that comes to mind is that he was blocking her sword arm as opposed to the blade of her lightsaber. (Which I just noticed I'd been misspelling for yonks. Stupid different spelling for different countries! :angry)

Willow's thinking a bit sloppily though, assuming that a red lightsaber blade means a Sith, even if in this case she is correct. That's a generalization.

Nice update, mate.

Cheers,
Paul.

I'll field that, seeing as I was the one who suggested Maul not use his saber for this 'fight' - yes, he was blocking Willow's hands and arms, and using his ability to thus control where Willow's attacks went to stand close enough to her to do it. Very arrogant and brilliant, but that's Maul, isn't it? There's a fan-made film on theforce.net called 'Art of the Saber' which shows a little of the technique, and how you don't necessarily need a lightsaber to defend against one (so long as you're very, very good). It's also a damn cool little film in its own right, and if George Lucas had hired people with those skills to choreograph his fights, I personally think it'd have added an extra digit to the box office take.

Wow. I cried with Willow when Darth Maul sliced up her/Tara's lightsabre.

Interesting to have Tara's musings about her history with Willow too, esp. her realisation that she was having personal feelings for Willow ever since their first encounter.

Obviously, given Willow's age at the time, those feelings can't have been of the "romantic love" variety at first, which means that they started out with some kind of deep platonic caring (or such), which adds another dimension to their relationship.

Whoo! I should have actually hurrahed and huzzahed when Darth Maul first arrived, but I'm doing a major happy dance that he will be integral in the plot for at least a while. He was always my favorite of the Sith (is it the clothes? the lightsaber? the color scheme?) in all of the Star Wars universe.

Coincidentally, your fic rocks, SithLordWiccan, and it rocks me like a hurricane.

Keep it up, and I hope to see an interesting reunion between W & T.

Darth Maul - the bastard! I'm so pissed off that I don't know what to say.
Isn't a Jedi's light saber supposed to be sacred or something? I expect that Maul thought he was demoralising Willow by cutting her's in half. I can't imagine him knowing about Willow's feelings for Tara (yet) so he wont know the real damage he has done.

I'm not sure how this light saber business is going to affect Willow. I'm hoping that it's gonna goad her into going for Darth Maul and royally kicking his arse!

Tara has had her mini break down, now she can get on with rescuing Willow.

i relaly like this story. i've always liked star wars. not like where i'm interested enough to learn everything about everything in the movies, but i like to watch them. and i like the way you write, because it's like i can see the exact picture of what you are writing. like a movie in my head. i know it sounds weird. but that is how i read. and it's awesome when i can just visualize from what you write, unlike with others where i kinda have to work at the images. well anyway. awesome chapter.

Willowlover: Yeah, Maul needs to die. And he will, don't worry. As for Willow...well, I don't wanna ruin the surprise, now do I?

Paul: Yeah, the Gungans aren't too thrilled with Tara. But on the other hand, she did fight against them. And yes, Tara didn't exactly plan out things. By keeping Willow sheltered, she didn't exactly do either herself or Willow any favors. Willow never learned how to handle herself in the real world and Tara's been left with the rather selfish notion that she needs to protect Willow from even the smallest danger.

And yes, I wanted to show the fact that Willow's getting too emotional. The main difference between Jedi Willow and Buffy Willow is that Buffy Willow feels that she needs to be supergal in order to be of worth to everybody. Jedi Willow, as one of over ten thousand similar people in the galaxy, doesn't feel the pressure to be better than everyone else. She also sees Tara as a role model as to what she can aspire to be. This means that she immediately regrets any action that she knows Tara wouldn't condone.

The fight between Willow was something I tried to do well. I had already established that Willow's lightsaber is precious to her, given that it was a gift from Tara. I figured that having Maul destroy it would be the best way to send a message to Willow that she was in danger.

And yes. You are a nerd. But hey. So am I. :kdevil

Chris: Thanks a lot for helping me write that scene. It means a lot.

Devi: Tara's felt something for Willow ever since they first met, yes. But since this can't be the "coffee, food, kisses and gay love" type love, I had to make it a more sisterly friendship. It's only now, when they're older, that their feelings are starting to become something more.

notl33t: Yes, what Maul has done (and will do) is important to the overall plot. Keep an eye out for later developments. And thanks for the praise.

caz: I would imagine. I wanted readers to get pissed off at Maul for what he's done to Willow. This is rather ironic in that I don't like watching Willow get hurt myself. (there are Buffy episodes I cannot watch simply because of that). And Maul really had done more damage than he realized. Of course, he won't be around to see it.

As for motivating Willow, it might. But what will Willow do when its her against the whole droid army?

Hers Always: Thanks for the comment on my writing style. I like to think I'm a visual writer and that people can see what I write when they read.

Anyways, I've finished the latest chapter. Depending on when I get my beta comments back, it can be up this weekend. :)

Chapter Fourteen

Tara sat on a tree stump, watching as Master Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan and the Queen discussed the specifics of the upcoming battle. They would draw the majority of the droid army away from Theed while she, the Jedi and a small group of troops would infiltrate the city. Accompanying them would be a small group of pilots that would launch from the hanger bay and attempt to take out the Droid Control Ship that was in orbit.

Her role in the assault had been discussed and decided upon, and now she felt that she had nothing more to contribute. So she had decided to sit on a nearby tree stump until the others were ready to move, her thoughts once again turning to Willow. She didn’t know what she was going through at this moment, but she knew that it must have been horrible. It occurred to her that if she hadn’t sheltered Willow from the galaxy, she wouldn’t be as scared as she must be right now.

”And I wouldn’t feel so guilty now,” she thought. ”How could I have ever believed that sheltering Willow would protect her?”

Tara was determined to rescue Willow, and was willing to do whatever was necessary to do so. The thought filled her with dread. She knew that, as a Jedi, she was supposed to do what she could to protect the innocent and provide peace and justice. But this situation felt different somehow. It was easy to justify doing whatever was necessary when you’re talking about protecting the galaxy. It was different when you boiled down the duty of protecting the entire galaxy to one single individual.

Especially one individual that you cared about so deeply as Tara cared for Willow.

Tara found herself thinking about what she had been taught. The Jedi were not allowed to form attachments to anything. This was done in order to prevent them from having to be conflicted when it came to their duty to the galaxy. It was something that Tara could not believe. She always felt that the Jedi could benefit from having attachments and a strong emotional connection to someone, if only to ensure that one would do whatever he or she could to protect others.

Tara knew that her thoughts were forbidden, and that was why she had kept mostly to herself. Over the years, those thoughts and her desire to protect the galaxy had slowly built a wall around her emotions. She had told herself many times that she did it in order to keep things in perspective and that it was for the good of everyone she knew if she didn’t become too involved with what was going on around her.

It also kept her from thinking about her father. From what Master Halcyon had told her, he was a particularly vicious man who had no morals whatsoever. She could only imagine the horrors that he had inflicted on her mother. It made Tara sick to think that she could be related to someone like him. And it further made her depressed that he had killed hundreds of innocents just to enact his revenge on her for what he considered to be a shot at his own ego.

The only thing that comforted Tara was the fact that she would never have to deal with him. He was in prison with no hope of parole or escape. She could visit him if she wanted, but the Jedi tenet of severing familial bonds frowned upon it. She found herself glad that, at least in that respect, her role as a Jedi was not a burden.

“Don’t worry. Everything will be all right.”

Tara lifted her head to find the source of the voice. She recognized its source to be the tow headed boy that had accompanied Master Qui-Gon and the others. His face showed a genuine concern for her welfare. This surprised Tara more than anything else. Most people she dealt with put their own affairs first and her opinions and concerns second.

“Wh…what?” she stammered.

“You look upset,” the boy said as he moved to sit beside Tara. “You’re worried. Worried about what’s going to happen. You don’t need to be. Everything will be all right.”

Tara held back the optimism that the boy’s words attempted to infuse within her. “You don’t know that. Things can go wrong.” She fought the tears that threatened to overpower her resolve. It also kept her from speaking aloud the next thought to pass through her brain. “Everything always does when I’m around.”

The boy gave Tara a quizzical glare. “What do you mean?”

Tara sighed. “Everytime I try to help, something always goes wrong. Look what I’ve done here. I tried to protect Willow, and she got captured. I tried to help the Gungans, and led the droids right to them. I tried to do my best to help, and managed to cause an even bigger mess.”

“Maybe,” the boy said, his tone conveying more sincerity that Tara would have expected from a nine-year-old. “But you couldn’t be expected to do everything. Master Qui-Gon is one of the wisest people I’ve ever met and even he couldn’t defend me to the Council.” He sighed. “I wanted to be a Jedi, but they thought I was too old. Qui-Gon stuck up for me, but even he couldn’t convince them.”

“I was too old, as well,” Tara admitted. “But they accepted me. I’ve always wondered why.” She couldn’t tell him that it was because of her mother’s sacrifice that she was allowed to become a part of the Jedi Order. She wasn’t sure that he could understand.

The boy turned to respond, but a voice interrupted before he could reply. “Annie, we’re almost ready. Go with the others. I need to talk to Master Maclay.”

The boy nodded and ran off to join the small group. Qui-Gon sat down beside Tara. “I think we need to have a discussion, Master Maclay.”

Tara swallowed. Something about the elder Master’s tone indicated that this was not going to be a conversation that she wanted to hear. “Not that I…I…I…I want to…disagree, Master. But…I think that…”

Qui-Gon placed his hand on Tara’s arm. “Now is as good a time as any, Tara. We may not get another chance.”

Tara passed her gaze down to her feet and nodded. “I…OK.”

Qui-Gon let out a deep sigh. “Tara, I know that you feel responsible for what has happened here. I want you to know that you should not be. You did the best that you could given the circumstances that you found yourself in. And you did all that was necessary in order to protect yourself and your Padawan.”

“But I let her be captured,” Tara blurted out. “I let her down just when she needed me the most.”

“Willow knew the risks,” Qui-Gon said, attempting to reassure Tara and hoping that she could control her feelings better. It deeply concerned him that Tara was showing more emotion about the situation that she should have. It also concerned him that Tara was putting her Padawan at the forefront of her thoughts. “And I know that you care for her.”

This brought Tara’s head around quickly. “I…I tried…I tried to maintain an emotional distance, Master. But…”

The hand on Tara’s arm gently squeezed as Qui-Gon replied, “I know. You shouldn’t feel guilty. It is only natural for someone in your situation to feel the way that you do. But you should not allow yourself to have your emotions control you. The only way to save Willow is to keep your mind on the task at hand. Our objective will be difficult as it is.”

Tara faintly smiled, glad that she wouldn’t have to explain herself. “I understand, Master. I won’t let either of you down.”

“I know you won’t,” Qui-Gon replied as he sat up and moved to join the others. After several steps, he turned back to look at Tara. “But I would suggest that you make your feelings known to the Council. They will need to know about this.”

Tara’s mood immediately darkened. She had thought that she could hide her feelings for Willow from everyone else. It was bad enough that Qui-Gon could comment on it. But Qui-Gon was a maverick and known for going against the Council. And although he had given her the option, from his tone he very much hoped that she would inform them about this new development.

The thought brought Tara up short. She had stood up for Willow, ensured that she would remain a part of the Jedi Order. The Council had given her to Tara in the hopes that she could turn the precocious Youngling into a shining example of what it meant to be a Jedi.

If she were to go to the Council and tell them that she had formed an attachment to Willow, they would consider it enough of a reason to cast her from the Order. She would have failed Willow once again. It would be a problem she would have to deal with later, however.

Right now, she had to concentrate on the mission. The ramifications would have to wait until later.

The hologram of Darth Sidious, projected from the holoplate of the mechno chair, gazed into the faces of Nute Gunray, Rune Haako, OOM-9 and his apprentice. They had passed onto him grave information that had the potential to disrupt his plans further.

“I had not believed that the Queen would attempt this,” he told the assembled group. “She must be even more foolish than I thought.”

“I have begun to increase security at the detention camps,” OOM-9’s electronic voice reverberated. “Resistance from the Naboo will be highly unlikely.”

“And all remaining forces are converging near the swamps to confront the army assembling there,” Gunray added. “It appears to be made up of primitives, my lord. Our forces will have no problem eliminating them.”

“Your enthusiasm may be premature, Viceroy,” Sidious scowled. “With a Jedi in your midst, the Queen’s protectors will no doubt attempt to infiltrate the palace to rescue her.” His gaze passed to his apprentice. “Lord Maul, once you have eliminated them, the prisoner’s life is forefit. Eliminate her as you see fit.”

Maul tilted his head in silent acknowledgement.

Gunray, meanwhile, entered the conversation once again. “I have your approval to proceed, my lord?”

Sidious’ face remained passive. The coming battle may have meant something to Gunray and his lackeys, but it meant little to him. The Neimoidians and their droid forces were pawns to be discarded at his leisure. Should they defeat the Queen’s forces, their act would bring him more of the influence he needed. Should they fail, he could turn their defeat into a situation that would support his long-term plans.

As long as the Neimoidians fulfilled their purpose, it mattered not whether they succeeded. Either way, he would emerge triumphant. His apprentice was another matter. The Jedi were formidable, and with one of their own as a prisoner of the Federation, they would come for her without fail.

But his apprentice would be there to stop them. Sidious had trained him specifically for the task of eliminating the Jedi from the galaxy. And the four on Naboo would only be the first to taste the unbridled fury that was Darth Maul, Dark Lord of the Sith.

The first step in his plan to gain complete control of the Republic was coming to a close. And this battle, regardless of its outcome, would be only the first skirmish in a firestorm that would sweep the galaxy and change it for decades to come.

But that was the future. And the present demanded his attention. The four beings before him awaited his response to their query. And he was all too happy to give it to them.

“Wipe them out. All of them.”
