This is part of a series of lectures being presented by the School of Human and Health Sciences at Huddersfield. There's no info about it on their webpage, but the following is from their promotional leaflet:

We are family: How Buffy the Vampire Slayer reflects families today.

Vampires, rogue demon hunters, and random werewolves. Buffy has a lot to contend with, torn between family and fighting the forces of evil. The TV programme Buffy the Vampire Slayer gives a great insight into the changes that are happening in Western society and their effects on family life today. We look at the increasingly diverse range of family circumstances people are living in and the impact of these on our children and adolescents. We consider how Buffy the Vampire Slayer reflects some of these changes and uses dramatic story lines to represent the benefits and dangers of an ever-evolving society.

One would hope that among the "diverse range of family circumstances" they would mention the fact that Dawn has two mommies.

And one really pushy sister who's trying her best to fill their mom's shoes. Despite being the slayer, Buffy can be so clueless when it comes to "momness." At least Buffy tries, despite Dawn's sometimes low opinion of her.

Yeah, it's affirming when you see characters chose their own families. I'm sure a few people who frequent the Kitten know what that's like, since families aren't always understanding when it comes to likes and orientations.

Yeah, I hadn't thought about Dawn having two mommies. *happy sigh* and THAT's progress! A loving, committed couple pitches in to raise a child and that's what counts - sounds great!
